NATO Tests New Super Tank To Repel Russian Attack On Europe

  • On June 17, 2022, a prototype of a new German tank was shown at the Eurosatory exhibition in Paris to replace the aging Leopard-2. The new vehicle was named Panther KF51. The exact characteristics of this vehicle are not disclosed, and it is essentially a technology demonstrator, but the available data already allow us to get some idea about it.
    Demonstrating the brainchild of his company in front of numerous journalists, experts, and military men, Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger said that the Panther is a kind of continuation of the Leopard-2 family of tanks. This statement was probably made for two reasons.

      obviously its just now that you take notice, the MBT development and testing was constant in the past years. We got quiet a number of prototypes coming and going with barely any attention from the public, as there simply wasnt a need in the publics eyes.
      Also seeing russia now even fielding T55s in frontline service tells you everything about the why the west took it slow ... Our enemies development of new MBTs was neither very successful nor productive either, so very little point in wasting billions when minor upgrades of old tank would do.

    In 1969-1970, while serving in the Army in Vietnam, I was talking with one of our pilot officers. He had been in tanks and said that when he found out what a HEAT round did to th inside of a tank, he immediatelys tarted the process of getting out of tanks and into aircraft. They weren't invincible themn, and Ukraine has shown the world how truly vulnerable tanks are. Ukraine has had to find a way of dealing with tanks; one wonders, because most armies are not in a war, how much impact Ukraine's cobbled together defense against tanks is making on the war planners.

    rheinmetall wants to get in on the market. today, the Leo2 is mainly being build by _Krauss Maffei Wegmann_ and rheinmetall provides the gun.
    the Panther most probably won't get government support form Germany. it needs a major foreign buyer for any chance of lift off. so far, none has been forthcoming.

    • @diedampfbrasse98
      @diedampfbrasse98 Před 2 měsíci

      Rheinmetall is already in the market and they did/do much more then just the gun and FCS btw, especially the multiple L2A4 upgrade contracts heavily rely on Rheinmetall production/armor development even when KMW gets a piece of the contract due to licences. In 2023 those competitors even had a legal argument settled around Rheinmetalls rights to the Leopard 2A4 development. Rheinmetall also did more recently the Leopard 1 refurbishment for Ukraine, the L2A4 ring swap with the slovak republic, they now build the Lynx IFVs and so on. They are by no means newbies to the tank game, but old school development competition and partner to KMW at the same time.
      The Panther is just an answer to KMW having ditched Rheinmetall for future MBT developments and taken Nexter on board.

    • @a5cent
      @a5cent Před 2 měsíci +2

      Nothing mobile can be built today that can survive an anti-tank missile hit. Just having that expectation is, frankly, brain dead. And yet, armored mobile fire platforms remain essential on the battlefield. So what do you do?
      Anyone can bitch and criticize. The question is how you provide those capabilities in a package that is at least somewhat survivable. The answer provided here is to spot and eliminate that threat before such a missile can be fired (drone operator), or, if all else fails, have the APS neutralize the missile. That is a reasonable approach. I doubt this technology is fully fleshed out and mature, but the process must start somewhere.

    Stupidity. The war in Ukraine has demonstrated on a daily basis that WW2 tank warfare is dead. It's over. The cold-war vision of 10,000 Russian tanks crossing into Germany, to meet 10,000 NATO tanks is history.
    10,000 Russian tanks would be met by swarms of a million A.I. controlled drones. The battlefield just changed. Would YOU want to be in a tank on a battlefield today? 50 tons of hot, magnetic, steel?? That sounds like just the sort of target an AI drone is looking for.
    The Ukrainians will produce a million drones in 2024. Most of them domestic-sized, disposable, types. But that's 2 for every Russian foot soldier. Trench warfare is dead now.
    When there are thousands of disposable drones swarming overhead do you really want to be cooking your Beans in a freezing trench.
    You can bet your last dollar that every Military on the planet is having a major rethink about where to spend their defence budget.

      limited range on drones makes humans unexpendable with our technology. This wont change til we get WAAAY better batteries, but ai on these would definetly help UA. What is actually stupid is this sort of "thinking".
      The last millennia of warfare have demonstrated, on a daily bases, that human soldiers are extremely squishy and have no business participating in warfare. It's over. That vision is history.
      See how ridiculous that sounds. The reason humans aren't taken off the battlefield is the exact same reason tanks won't be either. Tanks will adapt and change, but they aren't going away.

      One common theme I’ve heard is that Germany have a tendency towards over-engineering their tanks. As an air force man I don’t know too much about tanks beyond identifying them from above. I recall stories of panzer divisions in WWII having a lot of issues with breaking down frequently. Utterly formidable compared to allied tanks when they worked, but often a sitting duck after one fault or another. To be honest, that’s about as much as I know about them so I’m sure others have more knowledge and understanding in this area than myself.
