  • In May 2024, we trekked and camped our way east to west across the island of Madeira in Portugal. We followed some of the most famous and picturesque routes, and climbed to the highest point, Pico Ruivo. We were treated to glorious conditions as we traversed the at times challenging terrain. This ranged from semi-desert; rugged mountains resplendent in spring flowers; endangered Laurisilva; and lush sub-tropical rainforest.

Yes, we ain't that young anymore, lol! We were probably the oldest couple undertaking the cross island trek, and fair play to the young'uns, they were full of praise for us!!!

Thank you so much for your comments. In recent years we haven't put commentary too much on our videos but thought that it might be appropriate for this video. In our opinion the route is harder than many of the treks that we have done around the world (except perhaps Greenland). Sorry that you were the bearers bad news!. Well done to you and your family in completing it.

Great film, thank you. Was the trek a recognised route or piecing together various routes ? If the former, is there a guidebook to the route ? Thank you.

We made our own route across the island. We used a map by a British company called Discovery Walking Guides to plan the trek. Cicerone has also published a book by Paddy Dillon covering walks in Madeira, although we did not use this. Basically, you are only limited by your own imagination as to what coast to coast route to devise.
