Long before the High-Flyer paper kites and Gayla kites reach the warm coast of Puerto Rico early in the 1960's we had the very similar home-made Lebanese paper kite. They were called CAPUCHINOS. We used exactly the same materials, though the tail was made form very thinly cut pieces of scrap textiles.
    ¡¡¡¡GRACIAS!!!!

Greetings from North Baltimore, MD, USA, Samo! Thank you very much for posting this brilliant, fun video! I am a long-time kite flier & fly the sophisticated airfoil kites w/ my club. (My kites are made of rip-stop nylon, like parachute/hang glider fabric). Typically in good winds, 5 - 30 mph, I get them up 400 to 500 ft. This paper kite, however, is truly an AMAZING design & you explained the creating procedures so well! Great for teaching basic kite aerodynamics to anyone, esp. children who are beginning to learn kite flying in general. A really cool classroom art & crafts project that will stick in childrens' minds for them to share w/ their families & eventually w/ their own children and grandchildren for generations. I've modified the materials somewhat to slightly heavier cardstock paper & using crochet thread instead of lightweight sewing thread. I also taught my first kite-making class to use a hand-operated paper punch tool. It was safer & easier for the young children to use this office tool instead of the scissors. Finally, rather than your traditional diamond-shaped holes, the paper punch tool creates round holes around which we glued lightweight paper reinforcements w/ the same size holes to prevent the line from cutting into the cardstock paper. As a result, the class could fly their kites confidently at the beach where higher wind speeds would not damage the more durable kites w/ these materials. Prior to punching holes & attaching lines, I also encouraged the class to use child-safe felt markers to either color block the sections of the folds or create designs of their own. Your traditional principles, regardless of our modifications, are still very reliable and consistent w/ sturdier materials. One in the class had a recent birthday & attached a length of his gift wrapping ribbon from a present along side your paper tail design for an even more interesting flying effect. Thank you for sharing this video. It brought lots of smiles and joy to a lot of folks on this side of the world! Many thanks once again from all of us! Salaam aleikum! :-)

I live in a windy spot and need to make mine heavier too. What weight card stock did you use? And was your crochet thread cotton?

Made this with the great instructions, and it worked well. Flew very high! I reinforced the paper with scotch tape before cutting the holes, just in case. Ours ended up in a tree, but since we used construction paper and thread, it might eventually make nesting material for wild animals. Will continue using this method. Thank you!

Morris: Thanks for your interest! Try the lightest cardstock weight recommended for printing business cards. The crochet thread I use is, in fact, cotton; however, nylon poly is lighter & does not a absorb moisture as much as cotton line which would make it heavier. I have not experienced any problems w/ either choice, so feel free to experiment. The most important thing about mounting your line onto the paper kite is to take meticulous care reinforcing all holes you cut/punch into the kite w/ scotch tape to avoid damage to the kite from your line. Happy flying! :-) Robby of Maui
