The need for a tail depends on the amount of wind. If your kite nosedives, then you need to add the tail little by little until you get it right for the wind
Best Tutorial!!! It includes materials & measurements and easy to follow. I made one this morning and went out to test it out. My kite flew beautifully!!! So Grateful... now I can show my Summer Camp Kids how to make it!! Woohoo!
I think, it also should work with a plastik bag from a supermarket, sometimes they have funny prints on them. It´s more weather-proof than paper and should even survive, if it drops into the water when flewn at the beach
How about testing other variants of diamond kite-shapes: This one has a 40 cm horizontal stick, that is attached 20 cm below the top (spine-length: 60 cm). How about trying a 50 0r 60 cm horizontal stick and attach it 15 or only 10 cm below the top for an encreades wingspan and nose-angle (by keeping the 60 cm spine)? that´s more the shape of the kites, that are sold in toy-shops.

@@deerbard You are welcome, unstable kite flying may be caused by unsimetryc kite left and right side weight or when wind is too strong. For stabilizating kite You can attach string in left and right corners in up corner and middle than tie them together to catch correct angle between kite and main string.

This helped me finalise the setup of my diamond kite. The earlier instructions I'd been using had missed the step starting at 9:12 about how to feed the string back through the sail. You have to do this, otherwise it forms an unstable shape if the frame is facing into the wind.
at least you took the time to make the kite video...sort of...kind of...I made kites as a kid...I flew one that was 4 ft tall...it had string around the edges and went 600 ft (twine string) in the air...the wind was so strong it stayed up all night...three of us couldn't bring it down...till next morning...and that was a fight...never again...this kite you made would be for a 5 or 6 year old...they tear things up...lol...I was ten at the time...I learned not to fly over 100 ft without a license...LOL ...carry on...!!!
I suppose this suits the purpose of something simple as a fun project. But it is really not the best design. I would recommend searching further for something more sturdy and aerodynamic.

About aerodynamic, there is full shops of cheap very good flying kites, but making god aerodynamic kite from home materials is not so simple.

The ones I have seen use a length of string or twine routed along the tips of each crossmember and then the type material is folded on top of this to provide some extra strength. I have also seen an additional length of string pulled tightly across the short stick to make it the shape of a bow as in a bow and arrow. I believe this allows the air to flow around the kite so as to stabilize the kite in the air. But as I believe I said in my original comment so long as it works and it's fun and easy to make that's all that really matters.
Following this video will result in a kite that flys, not all 'how to make a kite video' give full details or explain everything correctly, well done.

It will be interesting to try next summer. I also tried to make a Pakistan style kite without a tale, and it flies bad, maybe need some practice.
