  • The equation of motion in mechanical ventilation is a mathematical expression that describes the movement of air in and out of the lungs during positive pressure ventilation. It is based on the principles of fluid mechanics and describes the relationship between the pressure, flow, resistance, volume and compliance in the respiratory system
    ΔP = FR + CV
    Where:
    ΔP = Pressure difference across the airway (measured in cmH2O)
    F = Flow of gas (measured in L/min)
    R = Resistance of the airway (measured in cmH2O/L/min)
    C = Compliance of the lungs (measured in L/cmH2O)
    V = Volume of gas in the lungs (measured in L)
    This equation states that the pressure difference across the airway (ΔP) is equal to the sum of the product of the flow of gas (F) and the resistance of the airway (R), and the product of the compliance of the lungs (C) and the volume of gas in the lungs (V).
