Chris Stuckmann reviews Your Name, starring Ryûnosuke Kamiki, Mone Kamishiraishi, Ryô Narita, Aoi Yuki. Directed by Makoto Shinkai.
"I''m going to give your name n A+."
Thank you Chris, I like my name too.
Aya ya Badum tsh!
Aya ya now I want a movie called "My penis" and want Chris to review it
Your name? I thought he meant my name.
You guys are dumb. He obviously meant my name.
Aya ya Hahahaha.
My one single problem with this movie: I'm a 38 year old metalhead, and this movie left me an emotional wreck.
Then the film did it's job well.
René Jiménez aye man I’m not into anime and almost lost it at the ending
René Jiménez that sounds like a you problem
It left me blubbering, even with the ending. Damn it, they earned it.
What a great comment lol
*This* wasn't nominated for best picture, but *Boss Baby* was?

Mostly because "Hollywood" would not like to draw attention to it in order to copy it and adapt it and take the credit themselves but rarely do Hollywood anime adaptions turn out to be good and in this case it needs to be excellent.
The competition was much stronger that year, to be fair. I would nominate this over Moana or Kubo, though. I haven't seen My Life as a Zucchini or the Red Turtle so I can't judge if it's better than those two.
That "I love you" scene is what broke me.
Same for me
The simultaneous "Magic hour!" Scene on the mountain got me
Thank you for spoiling

Animation: A+

Everything is an A+!
Caleb Cali Wouldn't be a CZcams video without the cliche cringey af comment.
Relife’s story was better

Caleb Cali ending: meh I just feel like it wasn’t fully complete.
That animation is fucking beautiful, my god.
and also 5cm per Second
Basically a rule of thumb is,
If it has Ghibli name with it, go watch it. Because it'll probably have one of the best stories, animation and voice acting in the whole industry
Rabby Babu your name isn't a Ghibli movie
I know, those Koreans are so talented at drawing
Japanese, not Koreans.
Honestly one of the best movies I've ever seen.
you havent seen much movie then

myanimelist.net/anime/28851/Koe_no_Katachi?
myanimelist.net/anime/1089/Macross__Do_You_Remember_Love
Honestly, Koe no Katachi is super overrated. I've seen it twice and I think it's a good story, but I feel like it was trying too hard to make me cry (I didn't). The melodrama just wore me too thin by the end and I was just fed up with everyone constantly apologizing and crying to each other. I liked the ending for sure, and again, great movie. But I feel like Your Name earns its tears. I grew to genuinely love both of the protagonists. There was nothing that didn't feel utterly complete about it, and by the start of the third act, I was just enraptured. The Japanese animation to do that to me was Spirited Away.
I’m not into anime but.....BRO THAT ENDING WAS SO F*CKING SATISFYING😢😢😢😢

And now Hollywood will destroy the movie by adapting it.
Fucking jj abrams
Hey, you don't talk bad about the JJ!
joey zapata JJ is kinda mediocre
Hes gonna include loads of lens flares
There's already tons of lens flare in this movie so it wouldn't really matter. Also, Ghost In The Shell was damn good. A recent anime film that was done very well and true to the source material
This movie was so sad man , I thought it was going to be like a chick flick but it was a very spiritual film..One of the best movies of the year
The ending was epic doe.
Whats left there to tell? Mitsuha and Taki's story have ended.
+AJ Gaming No.Absolutely not. Start dating, get married, and have a child? You want Disney sequels?
Thats why a i think a prequel is much better. It was explained in the movie that both Mitsuha's mother and grandmother also was switching bodies in thier youth.
They could explore her mother and who she switched with since it didnt seem like it was her husband.
Shawn Overacker saw it it was good not great I'm waiting on a silent voice
This movie is truly a masterpiece.
You said it best!! 😍😍😍😍
No it isn’t
@Just Some Cookie Without a Lifeeven elon musk praised it . So , it surely is a masterpiece.
@Just Some Cookie Without a Life wow, comparing elon to ninja . The fact that elon ,despite being a busy man ,came out to praise it is an achievement . Well , i cant expect much from a fortnite player
@Just Some Cookie Without a Life logicaly , its has . He is a smart person , he liked the concept of the movie . I know that the concept isn't very original or something . But the way the story was structured and the message it tried to convey ,surely makes it a masterpiece.
I FINALLY saw this film and I am so happy because this is one of the most unique and beautiful film. I wish that American films could come up with such unique ideas because Hollywood is just not making those great films anymore. I have to say that this was one of the best animated film of 2016.
I have a lot to say!
Its hardly Unique and its not any better than the garbage being spewed out by Hollywood.
It’s gonna have a remake by JJ Abrams
Kubo and the Two Strings is pretty fucking great too!
The Lawn Gnome That's a bit of a narrow statement. There are some amazing movies. Django.Unchained, Call me by Your Name, Blade Runner 2049, La La Land...I could name 100s. Don't be so.close.minded. get out there and explore.
Thumbs up if you want to see this film win the Oscars!
UPDATE: As you may know, the movie didn't make it to official nominations list which is really disappointing since it's probably gonna be a long time until any Japanese animated feature gets this much attention from the world audience. Nevertheless, I am certain that with the likes of Shinkai and Miyazaki and other unknown but talented Japanese moviemakers, seeing an anime movie in the future Oscars in a very real possibility.
Quang Anh Vu, I want Zootopia to win
Angel Castaneda Zootopia is really good but I really want a Japanese film to finally get an Oscar after such a long time. Hollywood will always find time to rule in the Oscars.
Quang Anh Vu, okay
I would love if it won but I really want Zootopia to win best animated feature, such a fantastic movie.
AND It's on Netflix! (I intend to watch it soon.)
I am not an Anime fan, don’t understand it and don’t like it. Took my 11 year old to see it because she REALLY wanted to see it. Well done…LOVED this movie! I was thoroughly surprised.
Sir watch Koe no Katachi,
You'll love it cause it gives such a wonderful message
Koe no Katachi (A Silent Voice) is a great movie...but definitely a lot heavier and more.. anime-ish than Your Name. I would suggest watching the Cowboy Bebop series.
I don’t like these types of anime’s and I was about ready to reach for the tissues by the end.
Ivan Ho I can relate , I really hate animes like dragon ball or narute the only anime I watched is Death Note , looking forward for this film
@rez maknae that gave me depression.

*Spoiler*
Ever wondered why Taki wrote 'I love you' instead of his name ? When Taki proposed to write their name down I bet you thought it was so stupid to write 'I love you' instead of writing his name, right? I mean Taki tachibana, address- Tokyo, easy to look up, right? Wrong! If Taki had written down his name, Musubi's offering would have prevented Mitsuha from making any sense of it or just like the cell phone messages it would have disappeared. Taki writing 'I love' was the greatest move he could have done because it was a feeling of love that was written down, Tsukiyomi(moon god) protected that message from being erased. Musubi couldn't do anything about that. Even until the very end (when they meet) they still aren't able to remember each other but they knew that they had a special connection. That's the power of Tsukiyomi. Sorry for the long post.
#copiedfrom_Greg Ibara
#YourNameExplained
I thought that he wrote his name but because of this strange memory loss and notes loss etc. it changed to I love you instead of name. Because it was also the truth
shut up
He wrote “I love you” because he knew that his memory would fade away, even writing on her hand would eventually fade. Saying “I love you” was his way of promising that he’d some how make it back to her. She may not know who loves her, but she’ll know she’s loved, and that will stick with her until they meet again.
I didn't even complain about him writing that. I was crying. I mean, when Mitsuha starts writing her name on Taki's hand, and then suddenly POOF, the music stops, everything stops, the pen falls to the ground, the background changes again... It was just too powerful... Why the fuck would I be worried about what did he write?
I have rarely watched anime but still i didn’t find anything in this movie not understandable. Though i watched it in dub so I don’t know if it had something anime related in japanese language. The only thing I didn’t understand was whatever they wrote cause i had no idea but now i know he wrote “i love you”. If there is any other such imp things written in japanese in this movie then please tell me 🙏🏼.
About his comment about liking it more if you're an Anime fan:
I watched this in theaters the other day with my little brother. I've watched a fair amount of Anime and took Japanese for a while in school (so I understood some of the Japanese jokes like the watashi, watakushi, boku, ore scene), while my brother had never seen an anime before and knew nothing about the movie going in. We both thought it was one of the best movies we'd ever seen. Don't worry about not "getting it" and just go watch it! It's incredible!!

Wow. Most A+'s in a year. Is it me or is 2016 another great year for movies?
Movies, hell yeah, and especially horror. Everything else, no.

Kimi No Na Wa is the most incredible film I have ever seen, animated or not. It is a life affirming experience that only gets better each time you watch it (and i've seen it 10 or more times over the last few years). I beg to differ. When I first watched the movie I had no history with anime or Japanese culture. A friend kept insisting that we watch it, I kept saying no because he only had it in Japanese and wasn't going to spend 1-2 hours long reading subtitles. Halfway into watching it and I realized that I'd forgotten that I was even reading. The story was that good. It honestly blew me away and was the best movie that I had seen that year.

Now I honestly had not heard of this film at all up till this point. So I went into this one completely blind! And it turned out to be such an experience.
I was not prepared for the beauty and emotion this film hit me with. I don't tear up often for things, but man Your Name had me crying damned near constantly for most of the latter part of the film.
I enjoyed it so much, I didn't even bother asking my friend for his half of the ticket price.

I Care Nothing is explained in this movie, the characters are pretty typical and its themes are all over the place, imo
Unfinished Sentenc it wasn't spoon fed to you but the clues were all there.
- The shrine that they are custodians of was a thousand years old
- the shrine maidens perform rituals they no longer understand due to a fire 300 yrs ago
- all the maidens can body swap (so yosuba's turn is coming)
- the God's body is in a thousand yr old crater
- the painting of the comet split on the cave ceiling
- the comet's return
The body swap can be seen as the god's way of trying to warn his followers to save themselves
it's the same for all his films pretty colors and mediocre to below average stories

its the #1 on my anime list and full metal alchemist brotherhood is behind it at #2
Not that I'm siding with TAS, but yeah, MAL is pretty shit for all intents and purposes aside from being a somewhat useful tool for cataloging anime.
MAL is broken with Gintama Taking up so many spots just put all Gintama in one spot god damn it
+Ty Lion
You realize that if that happens, every other anime would need to do the same thing, which will mess up the scores for many other great anime like JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.
Wiziliz how would it mess up FMAB??
Ty Lion
Because the scores would have to collide. If each TV season of Gintama were to collide into one thing, it would give Gintama the score of 9.14. If the same thing happened to Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, it would get a score of 8.79 or 8.80. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure would end up getting 8.51.
I think the reason i love this movie so much is because i can feel what they feel. Waking up just longing for something. The feeling that someone is out there and i could walk past them every day. Its like there's a big chunk of your body missing. like half of your soul is somewhere else. Then it hits me that ill probably never get to meet that person. And i feel like that Sadness is something most people around my age feel. Or maybe we just want to be loved. Its like a time bomb, counting down to the happiest moments of your life. But it can easily be defused.
Damn you'll make me cry
I've felt this longing too. The need for companionship, for a life partner, the need for touch and acceptance... the need for love.
But there' s not just one love for us. There's no special one we need to find, our other half. No. Love is the connections we make, the crossing of strings that tie us. It can be with whoever and it can happen many times in one's lifetime. So do not worry, friend. There is hope for all of us.

1. This film wasn't made with cells, it was made in computers.
2. Miazaki confirmed doing another film, he'll never truly retire.

If there is any other such imp things written in japanese in this movie then please tell me 🙏🏼.
lol okay
Another reason for you to watch anime then
@@icheatinexam5606 miyazami is miyazami and shinkai is shinkai 😠
@@florabloom3906 It's Miyazaki... And I don't know why you're mad lol
For anyone who isnt super into anime but wanting to see other anime films , some great ones are
-Akira
-wolf children
-girl who leapt through time
-ghost in the shell
-summer wars
-sword of the stranger
-tokyo godfathers
-perfect blue
-any ghibli film
and one that i think that is very underrated but a personal favorite
-Tekkonkinkreet
There is alot more than that too.
I love how you also are like me when it comes to anime..mostly fond of old skool movies with great artwork and atmosphere :D I watch new anime series as well but nothing beats the old skool anime movies!
I was looking for this comment. Thank you so much! :)
Heisenberg, Do not forget Paprika!
Heisenberg
completely agree on the any ghibli film👌
Heisenberg dude please add koe no katachi
This was the first anime movie I've ever watched and love it. The animation, the soundtrack and the story were just awesome. Definitely will meddle into the anime world a little more.
I literally just watched it and I cried through the last 45 minutes of the movie😭😭😭🤧🤧🤧
made me teary towards the end of the movie
why do people get mad when others say Anime is a Cartoon? I'm not saying it's a Cartoon.
***** I understand what you're saying, but people get mad over it, I don't understand why.
only weeaboos would complain about that
***** I think Anime is Japanese Cartoon for Adults.
Elektra no that's called hentai LUL
I think because when one calls something a cartoon it's like they are referring to a kids show (something immature) while an anime is for kids, teens and adults (or a more mature kind of 'cartoon').
I forced everyone I know who arent even into anime stuff to watch this and they absolutely loved it.
Anj I did the same lol
Right now I am doing the same thing
Who’s here after his Weathering With You review?
MEEEE
"Your Name gets an A+"
Really? My name sucks, though...
pls chris make more anime reviews dude. You are very good at them and u also promised
Unfortunately it seems that if an anime movie is not mainstream enough or has not received enough recognition from critics, is unlikely that Chris reviews an anime, which is a damn shame since in the last years there has been a good amount of great series.
This year he with this last anime-related video he has only reviewed 3 anime films, all of which has been major productions with Ghibli's "Only Yesterday", Hosoda's "The Boy and the Beast" and now Shinkai's "Your Name", titles that really are not that obscure and that most animation fans will watch regardless if there's a review or not thanks to the big names involved in their production.
We could count his Retro rewind focused on what he called the "japanimation era" to get to 4 anime-related videos, but that video is so misinformed and biased that I really struggle to count it as an objective anime discussion, since it really is more a talk about his preference and less about an analysis/discussion. Even so I hope that he decides to make more anime reviews in the near future.
last years
>great year for anime lul
modern anime sucks man
Miyazaki hasn't retired. Get up to date with the news!
I thought he died? Are you talking about his studio, studio gibli ?
He didn't die. He had retired, but recently came back for the work of a new final film, Boro the Caterpillar, which was previously a short cartoon but he wanted to make it into a full length feature film.
He only submitted a proposal. It's likely that it will get green-lit but it hasn't been officially confirmed yet so it's not wise to assume it's actually on track. Even if it does get made into a full length feature, he said it likely wouldn't be finished until around 2020. After all, not only is he not as young as he used to be, but he's also working in a medium of animation that he's almost completely new to.
hes more like a producer now. Most movies are made by his apprentices lately.
yea cause of course you can change a video after you uploaded it aside from removing and cutting stuff
I mean the only “anime” I’ve ever seen is spirited away and I’d still give this an A+. Sure some of the traditional stuff confused me, but the human story behind it all floored me
This is still one of the best reveiw that Chris has ever done. I remember watching this reveiw back in 2016 being blown by the visual of some of screenshots that he showed from the film. I discovered this film only bcoz of Chris back then. And it's now one of all time favourite anime. So thanks Chris!
Went to see this in theaters because of your review. Wasn't disappointed. Thank you
Your Name is one of the greatest movies made in recent years! This movie feels so fresh and new. I have nothing negative to say about this film. This movie deserves all the attention and successes it can get. Because it showcases how much of a art a movie can be.
Nah, you need to watch more anime movies, then you'll change your mind.
VoidX I'm sure he's seen plenty. It's a good film, I can concur and it's definitely the best that's come out in a while.
VoidX I've seen many anime movies. Many from Ghibli and most of Shinkai's movies!
Your Name in my eyes is a masterpiece, and I don't think that opinion is going to change any time soon. :)
Josh Leitzel He said "recent years", which is bullshit, what about Redline, The boy and the beast, or When Marnie was there?
MrTuri93 That's my point, watch more anime movies. What other movies have you seen, then?
I don't know about others. I am like a rock. I dont even react and feel at the emotional scene thinking that it is fake acting. But Your name just melted me. Something strange feeling rushed inside me when I watched it. And it will remain there for eternity.
Man! If I am allowed to give it stars, it will be 10/10 because No anime even no movie can replace it from my heart.
The first A+ he's given on his channel for an animated film
KaleLikesWaffles, Didn't he say he is going to do an Anime collection. I like waffles too
coming in I loved 5cm per Second, but I think Your Name is significantly better from a technical and storytelling standpoint. The plot was more complex, and somehow he worked a potentially-cheesy body-swapping device into a mystical one with gut-wrenching consequences. A truly remarkable achievement!
(SPOILERS)
And a happy ending for once!
watched Your Name 2 hours ago and its my 11th favourite animated film of all time..
definitely deserves an A+
@@vb2388 I dare u to name me the first 10 movies since you're so specific about it
god, 5 A+'s compared to 1 last year?! man 2016 was a good year for stuckmann
The day Chris makes a video about his anime collection will be the best day ever.
This is the first time in my life that I keep re-watching a "review". This is my favourite Anime and Chris you are literally the only reviewer who talks exactly the way I thought about the movie ! Makes me feel _less lonely?_ *How is that even possible?*
I'm not a huge anime fan but the one anime movie that I actually really loved was Spirited Away, that movie is freaking beautiful.
If you really liked spirited away go watch the best rated studio ghibli films.
Now that was a great movie! Your Name is nowhere near it!
Grave of the Fireflies, Akira and My Neighbour Totoro are the films which I felt were better than Spirited Away..
I show Spirited Away every year to the students in an after school program I work for. It is the ONLY movie they will sit through and watch til the end. This past year, a little boy said, "This music makes me wanna cry" and the movie had only just begun!!!
John Pero don't know why but I am one of the few people who didn't like spirited away. The story seemed too vague and I didn't see any point to it. Sry if I offended anyone.
I can't believe he's actually reviewing Your Name THANK YOU
Chris you should review Koe No Katachi when it comes out! Like if you agree!
I second that!
And now he did and gave it a really great review
Honestly being someone who is familiar with Japanese culture but not an anime fan, I absolutely adored this movie. Left me absolutely mesmerised and emotional.
You were right Chris, this movie was top tier.
Wow is this the 4th movie Chris gave an A+ to this year?
5th
Deadpool
Captain America: Civil War
The Nice Guys
Moonlight
Your Name
Jake G 2187
Well Moonlight and Your Name definitely deserve red the A+ that's for sure
+A.D.D Thom Defenitley! Especially Your Name. That's still my favorite film from this year. Moonlight's up there for me as well.
He actually gave *six* films an A+ this year! It's crazy. And, I'm sorry, but they didn't all deserve it (in *my* opinion, of course).
Deadpool (um, no. Just no. It was a fun, original superhero film with a great performance by Reynolds, but it's not a masterpiece of filmmaking. Get outta here.)
Captain America: Civil War (uh, sure? I don't know. I do think it's excellent and the *best* comic book film of 2016, but still not a masterpiece.)
The Nice Guys (again, a *very* underrated film and definitely fantastic and one of the best of 2016. But, "masterpiece" level? Hmm, not so sure about that.)
Moonlight (OK. Yeah, I get this one. I, personally, would not say it's *quite* a masterpiece, but it's brilliant and amazing and I can totally understand where he's coming from. My 4th favorite film of 2016.)
Your Name (haven't seen it yet. I *hope* it's really this extraordinary, though.)
Silence (yup. I completely agree with him on this one. I don't get the hate some critics had for it and I think it will be looked at as one of Scorsese's crowning achievements after he passes in 10+ years or so.)
Yeah, I am with you there - Captain America and Deadpool definitely not A+ material. The others I haven't seen yet.
This should definitely win the Oscars. I saw this way back when it was released in the internet three months ago and it is the new defining anime movie of this generation. Coming from watching Makoto Shinkai's movies you'd expect the same format but this is so cute and unique also quirky. Its a movie that is character driven, the music is great and the twist ending especially the feels regarding a train top it off. My hat is off towards Finding Dory, Moana and Zootopia but this is Japan's year!
It's not a "twist" ending, it was forced as fuck, this anime didn't define shit, you haven't seen enough anime movies...
VoidX No, it's definitely a twist. Also, the amount of anime they've seen (which is irrelevant) has no bearing on how legitimate their opinions on it are.
Josh Leitzel No, it was clearly forced, they had their memories completely erased, it didn't make sense for them to meet. It's not irrelevant, you'd see the difference in storytelling and realism, if you have more variety.
I have plenty of variety in the media I've seen. You probably shouldn't assume that everyone who disagrees with you only does because of a lack of experience or "refined taste."
+VoidX Stop commenting on everyone and make yourself look like a douche, because you're now at least in my eyes. Your Name is the best piece of animation that came out in recent years after Kaguya and The Wind Rises, and it's much better than The Boy and The Beast, period (it started out good but the second half was a clusterfuck with horrible writing, the worst I've seen from Hosoda).
Your Name doesn't really try to be realism, the whole body swapping is already an unnatural phenomenon. If you don't know why their memories get erased, cause one of the themes of this movie is about dreams, and what you've seen in dreams will be drifted away after you wake up. And why they meet again you ask? It's because they were connected by the "red string of fate" which was foreshadowed at the beginning.
Please do some research before you speak, ty.
I've never watched a Anime in my life if I'm honest. I watched this today, and all I can say is wow. I genuinely loved it. It stirred up so many emotions even now 4 hours after watching it I am still thinking about it. That has to truly be one of the most beautiful films ever made.
Never watched an anime in your life? I am getting nightmares just by reading that. Where would I had been without anime...
I find the 'you may not love this if you don't know anime' thing a bit condescending. This is like the second anime film i've ever seen and it completely blew me away and has been my favourite movie all year. Great film-making is great film-making.
my favourite movie of all time
This is definitely my favourite film of the year.
BUT THE TWIST!!!
Just two words, with vague spoilers.
Three. Years.
"vague"
5 years... Then they meet
The complete and absolute best movie i have ever seen. I ugly cried so loud and so hard. Me and the wife held each other and cried. Better than Avengers, Avatar, the matrix, Lord of the rings, whatever. This is the absolute best movie I've ever seen. Period.
I’ve watched this movie countless times now... I’m a graphics artist, and the visuals in this movie is jaw droppingly incredible!! The story gets me every time too 🥺🥺
5th A+ this entire year! Wow!
Saw this movie, it is actually AMAZING! The twist in this movie left me with my mouth open.
I was able to watch this movies on theaters, on an IMAX screen and omg, I didn’t paid enough for this movie. It was emotional, beautiful, funny... everything! And then I made my mom watch it, even when she’s not into “these chinese cartoons” and her jaw dropped and was super invested! This is a movie everyone should watch!
Shinkai's animation is next next level
i just finished watching this movie for the third time. This movie is incredible amazing. The music, screenplay, directing are all very good. Hope it gets nominated in next year academy award.
I've seen a hentai do the body swap thing once
Lmao
Kelechi Amuta please give it to me
Kumari Sampson ........................That's what she said
There are many XD
Watched this w my gf.. I’m an anime fan, she isn’t. At the end of the movie when they see eachother at the stairs, I cried lmao No idea why I did but it was the only reaction I had.
Went to Tokyo and went to the inspired stairs because of it.
Did your gf enjoyed the movie? , did she likes anime now?
@pablo ibarra
If I've never seen a single anime movie in my life, what should be the first?
Great video Chris!
Maybe a Ghibli movie? That studio has a pretty good track record. My personal favorites from them are Grave of the Fireflies, and The Wind Rises. :D
Daniel Mashanic
If you're down for a series, there are few better introductions than Cowboy Bebop. If not, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Wolf Children, My Neighbor Totoro, Grave of the Fireflies, Boy and the Beast, heck, even Akira or Paprika if you're fine with some really trippy visuals.
Junky Ketchup thanks bud!
Gravitynaut thanks buddy!
I'd definitely start with Spirited Away - probably the most accessible
I always for get how loud his intro is until i have my headphones on full blast
I loved this movie I teared up watching this and the animation is so fucking beautiful I can't wait to buy this once it comes out on blu-Ray The last anime movie that I teared up in and enjoyed this much was wolf children
Just an update I just pre-ordered my limited edition blu-ray set of Your Name
I watched just over 1 minute of this video and decided to watch the film.
It took me a couple days to get through it, but I am beyond words at how I’m feeling after it. It has been a solid day and I have not gotten over it yet.
So thank you, Chris, for convincing me to watch this movie. I’ll be honest, it’s somewhere in my favourite films now!
