Plants are constantly under attack. They face threats ranging from microscopic fungi to small herbivores like caterpillars, up to large herbivores like elephants. But plants are ready, with a whole series of internal and external defenses that make them a less appealing meal - or even a deadly one. Valentin Hammoudi explains some of the fascinating ways that plants defend themselves.

It's an unintentional way for plants to avoid extinction. Once humans find a good use for a plant and begin cultivating it, that plant is very unlikely to ever go extinct. Look at tomatoes. It would take an act of God or the extinction of humans to make the tomato plant run the risk of going extinct.

It felt like I was in a David Attenborough documentary on the garden of eden, birds flying all around and I even saw a pheasant. Lying down in the grass with no shirt I felt the sun beating down on my back,I was photosynthesizing and growing roots. I wasn't moving but I could feel myself growing along with the plants that surrounded me. There was one particular white clover flower that I was focusing with my 'third eye',I felt like we were sharing information but I just couldn't comprehend it.
When the trip was over I was kinda depressed, my incarnation as a plant was the happiest I had ever been.

Well, once upon a time, there was a princess named Kaniawati. Because of her beauty, many princes from other regions came to propose her. But she was so shy, so she repeatedly reject them, she didn't even reveal her face for them. Nevertheless, somehow, a prince Jaka Amparan made it into her room, and accidentally saw her face to face. Due to her excessive shame, she fell down and faint. Local people linked this story with Mimosa Pudica, they thought this princess has similar act and behavior, just like this plant. So they called this plant "Putri Malu" which means "Shy Princess".

There is a fruit native to Brazil called "pequi" (I don't know if it has a translation).
It has this same natural defense where it expells a lot of small spikes when bitten.
So be warned, if you come to Brazil (or see a yellow overgrown bean), do not bite pequi under any circunstances. Its okay to eat the yellow slimy-like substance in the surface, just be careful.

No, it doesn't really. The "take that vegans" comment or any comment anywhere that is directed toward vegans is done to poke fun at how persistent vegans are in imposing their ideas and lifestyle onto other people. I personally don't know many vegetarians who constantly belittle people for eating meat/seafood the way they want to and are more conscious of their own diet.
