I’m embarking on a 24-hour journey aboard the Amtrak Coast Starlight overnight train! After spending 52 hours on a train aboard the California Zephyr (first class sleeper train), join me on this beautiful long distance train trip going from San Francisco to Seattle! This is one of the most beautiful train rides in the US and maybe even one of the best trains in the world!
I’ll show you what it’s like to sleep on a train, and overall live on a train for a full day: from the meals, to the beautiful scenery that I enjoyed from the observation car to a full seat tour!
This is not only an Amtrak trip report but also a comparison between Amtrak Business Class, Amtrak Coach and Amtrak Roomette!

FYI Amtrak actually has the right of way by law. But the freight lines own the tracks and employee the dispatchers. They have miles long freight trains and the sidings often aren't big enough for them. So Amtrak has to wait.
Freight trains have deliberately made their trains too long for the sidings so that they don't have to give right of way to Amtrak, except that they do. This is why your train is late.
I'm glad you had a good trip! I've taken that route so many times over the years, and the views can be amazing.

hmm - I just called Amtrak, and apparently they don't offer business class seating on the Coast Starlight route any longer ... :-(

Amtrak passenger trains have a legal right to take preference over freight trains. Freight supposed to pull onto siding to let Amtrak past. Law passed 50 years ago. Freight ignores it.
