Classic Kyosho/Graupner Baja Body doesn't like 25% nitro fuel.

- Today i decided to make some nice HD footage of the classic Baja Body, but i only had fuel containing 25% nitromethane. Had a bad feeling about it but tried it out anyway.
The engine doesn't like it. When it was produced in the early 1980's, the fuel wasn't this agressive, the percentage of nitromethane was substantially lower. Therefore the combustion was slower, which wasn't a problem.
Increasing the percentage of nitromethane means a more agressive and rapid combustion, but the piston's deflector limits the speed of combustion, causing misfiring and an increase in temperatures. The cooling head can also not be shimmed.
In short, it's far from advisable. The engine will overheat eventually and i never got the engine to run smoothly. It made me feel like a total newbie.
Wost of all, the driveshaft gave up on me.

Thanks my friend! The first tank of fuel made me feel like a rookie, lol! But after some analyzing, it became clear that this engine wasn't made for this abuse. It's like using a 12V battery on a 6V motor.
That's a great comparison! Yea it's crazy how we will push the limits on this little rigs just to see what they can handle sometimes!
I should've known that it was a bad combination, but at the moment, it's the only fuel i have. On a positive note, after inspection of the engine, it didn't cause any harm and it helped breaking in the relatively new piston ring; the compression is more than healthy.
That's really good! Knowing it didn't cause any damage is a plus! Still found it a great learning lesson with fuels and older model motors. ;-)

High nitro fuel was avaiable in the USA where the Veco engines were made, back then. I used to run a similar buggy and I would set the needle on the rich side from the first tank. When unloaded it would lean out to a good safe mixture but never get over lean. Perhaps if you had let it cool off more between tanks it would have been okay. Nice vintage buggy!
Hey, thanks for the feedback!! It ran fine for 2 tanks of fuel, then the heat made it run bad. We used to run them for a couple of tanks without problems in the 1980's during races, but the percentage was much lower.
It still ran smooth with 20%, but i had the feeling of that was the limit. I usually refuel my cars without stopping the engineand never overheated an engine, now it became unconfortably hot. Felt like torturing the poor engine and won't do that again!
Nice buggy! I bet 10 or 15% nitro would be best for this model. =)

Do you still have the Veco in it? Is that a plain bearing (or BB) motor. It may appreciate a bit more oil in the fuel, say 24/25% (not sure how much oil is in the fuel you are using. some commercila mixes I have seen around only have around 18% oil). The synthetics also seem to not like lean hot runs.
I've restored the Veco last year and i'm not planning on replacing it anytime soon, i really like this engine. It's got ball bearings.The fuel i used is HPI. Very oily and all of my engines run great on it. The 25% is just too much vor the Veco, the piston's deflector distorts the rapid combustion, the engine is just not made to make high RPM.
I'll put some extra oil in it and se what it does next time!
Its indeed really hot stuff...but the engine is not push all to long with it,and itd not a very hot day...it will be fine Huib.Of course flush out after use and oil wellbut this thingsi dont ti tell you..You take very well car of your engines. ;-D
The engine was cooking and smoking during the 3rd tank of fuel. It then began to run bad, so i turned it off in advance. The compression is now better than before, lol!
Offcourse i take out any residual fuel and poor some oil in the engine ;-) Methanol is very corrosive.
