I was at a Sox game and afterwards there were a couple nurses from MGH in the garage struggling to deal with a flat on their Honda Civic… arguably very smart people… capable of saving lives in a moments notice… couldn’t Jack a car and unbolt a tire… I gladly did it for them…

This is the only video that actually shows how to get the pinion out of the housing that I could find thanks a bunch for real. Who knew you could just hit it with a hammer but better watch those threads there man if you will or your pinion is toast and wont work again when just a bearing replacement on your pinion.

    Good video, and explanations.
The wood chisel works OK (1:30) for separating the back-plate, but using
a "scraper" wouldn't cause the chisel to need sharpening. I use a
"painter's 5-in1 tool" for separating parts and scraping gaskets and
    sealer of off mating-surfaces.
Also, removing the pinion-nut (6:00,) one can use a pipe-wrench on the
pinion-yoke, instead of a block of wood in the rear.
-- And,... my older ('89 Cherokee) D35 has pressed-on axle-bearings and an outer plate/bolts (doesn't use the C-clips.) I had use a slide-hammer, with an adapter on the wheel-studs, to pull the axles.

  • @eliinthewolverinestate6729

Start by cleaning it and looking at spot welds on differential. There's no way you checked them with the curd caked on them. I have seen people dump $$$$ in an axle that was fubar in the beginning. All thanks to not cleaning and inspecting. Before you spend any time and your labor in it. Trust me I have seen it happen. I replaced bearings and seals then weeks later to have everything fubar. Had friends get a new rear end only later to find welds broken on it after installing.

Hey! I took apart out my carrier to replace the bearing on the driver side. I bought a new carrier and bearing and put those on etc. I also put on the ring that connects to but I didn’t torque them down yet; but when trying to put my carrier back on for some reason the race won’t go on all the way. Do you know why that it or do you know what I’m doing wrong or do I need to torque down the bolts first? I also have my axel still on the Jeep.

Hi, thanks for the very informative video. I am trying to remove the axle shaft so I can replace a leaking seal (and the bearing while I'm there.) But, I've run into a problem...I removed the 1/4-inch bolt, and that center pin, but for some reason when I push on the end of the shaft it doesn't go in far enough to release the c-clip. Argh! The clip is turning free enough...but it feels like the shaft is butting up agsinst metal out at the wheel end and not simply sliding in like it does in your video and every other that I've watched. Any ideas? Suggestions? So far, I've tried tapping at the end with a rubber mallet, but nothing. Any help would be very much appreciated! ~~Thx, Mark

But i’d say to get the biggest plumbers wrench you can find to hold the yoke from turning while you get a breaker bar on your 1⅛” socket. let the bottom of the car hold the plumbers wrench from spinning and give it all you got on the socket wrench. Anyway.. maybe that helps someone else who comes in here.
