See, when they were first teasing Old World, there was this expectation of revamping a bunch of old, cool stuff. Making it cross-compatible with AoS somewhat and updating a bunch of the lines would've been great. So weird not to do any of those things imo
Its an odd choice for sure! As we mentioned in this video I think there's more scope to bring AoS to TOW rather than crossing between the two.
I do find it slightly odd to release epic and old world so close together when they cant keep up demand with their excisting game systems. The old kits for current prices is a cheek as well.
Yeah it's a strange one, you could argue inflation plays a factor but I definitely agree. Why pay £40 for some skellies that look like hot butt when you can buy some Bonereapers that look better. It's all relative I suppose!
@the_kieran_show I love you guys because you try and be balanced but let's call a spade a spade, this all reeks !
Im hoping that the reason for the old models is just the logistical challenge of bringing out 7+ armies at once. Going to have to use some old sculpts if youre trying to do that in one go.
That said, as someone with circa 3000pts of tomb kings in the attic, Im looking forward to getting some replacement bits that have disappeared across the years/ various housemoves.
That could make sense for the logistical reasons! At least now you want have to pay crazy prices for tomb kings!
I've bee watching your videos most of the day as I was basing some figures. Really enjoyed them. Subbed.👍👍😉
Woooo! Glad to have you along!
As a completely new player with no Warhammer experience prior to this past Summer, I’m very excited for Old World. Not only does the game itself look awesome, but I actually like the older models, as they have a unique aesthetic that is not really common in modern GW models!
That’s a great view point to hear!
Despite the general negativity around old models, both returning and newly released, I am amazed that they're going into the storerooms and digging out old treasures. And the work they put in to make the models able to be cast again, not to mention the added detail on some of the kits. I hope we will see some of the FW kits that never saw the light of day.
As someone purely collecting and painting, never playing, I find myself more excited about The Old World than expected. I didn't end up getting any boxes from the release, only the novel; but I am very excited about the 'Made to Order' runs they're doing. I also think I will pick up that '08 Bretonnian Lord, the criticism has made me warm up to his sculpt.
I think on the hobby front you've nailed it there, the opportunity for people to tackle those models they missed out on when they were younger is such a nice experience.
Great as always.
I agree, if I was going to get into another game outside of 40K. It would be Heresy or Blood Bowl. I’ve never been into it and I’m old enough to remember it the first time around.
Maybe a re-release of battle fleet gothic or another Space Hulk would persuade a Yorkshireman to part with some cash! 👀
That's a fair point! Tbh a Space Hulk I thought was totally on the cards with Kill Team!
I'm very excited for Old World!
Definitely agree that a lot of the models are sub par but the game system that I loved is back and seemingly improved. To counter the model range I'm using all AoS slaves for my warriors with lots of conversions too so I have the best of both worlds. My mate is doing same by using lumineth for high elves.
Also the gameplay for old world looks fun!
@@the_kieran_show the actual game looks great so far imo. Fantasy but improved 👍
I only recently got onto 40k and miniatures in general so listening to people get so hyped about this "Old World" thing that was coming out or people always commenting "That's cool but not as cool as Old World Bretonians" had me really excited. Then I saw it was basically just a re-release of some old models that honestly aren't the best looking in their old materials and now I legitimately cannot understand the hype. I sort of get the nostalgia like when they re-released the base set pokemon cards but they at least updated the cards and gave them new treatments unlike old worlds models.
It's ALL built on nostalgia, which seems to be the case for alot of the newer battle boxes.
Yeah, it's honestly a shame because I might have been interested if it was new plastic kits. Like old units reimagined for 2024. But as is I'll just let the golden oldies have their fun and skip this one. @@the_kieran_show
I almost completely forgot, but I do remember an old WarCom article talking about them bringing Kislev in to the old world, when that happens with a whole new range, that’s something to keep an eye on for sure
Kislev would be very very cool to see.
I'm a simple man, i see a new Kieran show video i upvote then i watch.
Thanks!!
One thing oldhammer has that the new kits could do with is the modularity.
Mostly kits had legs, torsos arms and heads separated and fully exchangeable. I miss it with the new models that have specific instructions and you just "put together" instead of "building it" if it makes sense
It's a tough one, where although the newer models are monopose they're so so good. The more modular approach is a kitbashers dream you're absolutely right.
I'd be happy enough once my order from GW finally arrives! Annoying to sit in the queue to get the game and five days after release it's still marked as "processing".
I gave away my old Tomb Kings models when AoS came along - so decided to order Brettonians which I missed out on last time. It's a massive hit of nostalgia for me and I love the old metal models.
Hopefully your order arrives for you soon!
I'm curious about the old world. I never played it as a kid but I have come to love the Total Warhammer games and really enjoy the setting of the old world through those.
Should finances ever permit I woild give it a go
Always the finances! Total war is cheaper 😂
I was gonna get into fantasy battles as a teenager. I went for empire and still have my rule books and battalion that's half built I stopped when GW announced it would be ending hoping to get the old empire models soon so I can finish a hobby project I had planned to start nearly a decade ago
I'm sure they won't be very long away!
I'm liking the new models they're releasing, if they release elves I may get a couple models to paint, but I don't care to ever collect a rank and file army again.
Yeah elves could be very interesting!
I wasn't super interested before launch. I have a lot of nostalgia for tomb kings and bretonnians specifically, but seeing the old skeletons again told me that they were not for me. The rules ended up being much better than expected though, so I'm likely going to find a middle ground and make a Chaos army with the recent AoS releases. The Brets hold up well enough in my opinion but it's hard rebuying the same army I used to have for twice the price. At least this way I can port them to AoS if I need to
Incorporating the AoS ranges is absolutely what I see occuring, when the models are that good and fitting the setting aesthetically it's a guaranteed win.
Honestly for me the important part with old world isn't new minis, what i hope for is the world being updated and seeing a new ruleset and army books in a world I think is significantly more interesting than AOS, 40k or even the end times.
So if they'll just start releasing 1 new rulebook with updated rules once every 5 year or so it would be enough for me to be happy.
Hopefully that’s what you get to see! 😃
For me, these kits just look like stuff I will use to kitbash into other systems if I get any, will we see you painting up the Old World Box?
Probably not, I know that both of us aren't huge fans of the older models so it doesn't make a tonne of sense! Maybe a backlog challenge at some point with an Old World army if anything!
I am excited about Tow, mostly because of nostalgia. It started for me in 1997 when I was teenager. I cant buy rulebook atm, and thats weird. No Kislev or Cathay armies (the artwork provided couple years ago and first article about TOW was announcing Kislev) Don't mind old minis but not with todays prices. They like ebay prices a bit. So... I started assembling my Necromunda Ash Wastes box instead.
Sounds like you've got the right idea then! 😁
I understand why people wouldn't be into Old World, but I'm very excited for this. I was always interested in Warhammer Fantasy but I was a highschool student and therefore broke when the setting died, so I personally appreciate the chance to finally get into the game. But also why tf are ushabti so expensive please gw I just want to talk
At least you'll get to scratch that itch!
I'm really happy the Old World is coming back, but to me it sorta feels like GW has misread what people like about it. I think for my case and many like me we got into the Old World through stuff like Vermintide and Warhammer: Total War. What's cool and fascinating about it is the actual old lore and the old world itself, not the old sculpts or the game system. Personally, for me, I was hoping for at the very least a full modern refresh of the old armies, not a rerelease of 20 year old sculpts. As it stands for me, it's appealing to people who were around back in the day when Fantasy Battles died and burned, and not so much appealing to all the people who weren't around back then but have fallen in love with it after it's death.
Be interesting to see where the game in is in a year or two. Maybe more old kits will get a refresh!
I think its cool to do something like this.... However how many existing armies in their already established games need refreshes/can't be bought?
Im all for bringing back fantasy, skaven models at GW stores in the 2000s is what got me into mini games but i just worry its a butter scraped across too much bread kinda thing...
Yeah you could be right there. Soooo much going on for the designers etc
I think it’s cool for folks that are into it, happy for those that love the game and are jazzed. But like you guys said I ain’t got the mental fortitude let alone time for another war game.
Too little time! Got to prioritise.
As someone who wasn't there when warhammer fantasy but was definitely curious about Old World, I'm a little dissapointed with how it was handled. The new models do look nice but the old stuff just doesn't really do it for me and I'm disappointed that they didn't refresh the ranges, and it doesn't help that Lizardmen(the army I was considering in the future due to me also wanting to get into seraphon in AoS) got shoved into the: "We aren't doing this" pile of factions. And the way they've divided up the factions feels a little off to me. Like why are orcs, Tomb Kings and two chaos factions being counted in the same bracket?
So all in all I'm just not that interested, the new orc models look amazing but that's not really enough to make me interested enough to put orc clans on the list of armies I want to get eventually as the old returning models just don't do it for me, especially when I can go to the orruk warclans if I'm feeling like some fantasy orc stuff in a warhammer game.
Depending on how GW handles The Old World going forward my opinion could change, obviously but just based on the launch, there's just not enough to get me interested at the current moment. So for the moment I'm just kinda checked out of it, especially considering that this would be far down the line for me in terms of when I'd be trying it out.
Yeah it will be exciting to see where this goes, even if people are checked out from it.
I guess for me consistency is more important than the quality of the individual models (that's why I'm still using Firstborn - but I would never mix them with Primaris). The way Old World is set up I would probably only play it if I could build the whole army from one generation of models - most likely taking AoS and turning them into something as I didn't play WHF back in the day (I didn't like the models even than😅 - Confrontation was the way to go😁) .
Like I said the previous time, I have no clue who really the market for this game is and if even GW knows it, but I'll be watching it with interest. I definitely love it that more people are getting exposure to old rules because I feel like the modern systems have gone in a very, very different direction and contrary to HH's very specific setting you have here a lot of different factions so maybe more newer players will proxy some armies just to play the system.
Proxies are totally on the horizon. Like using the newer skeleton models over the old ones, feel like those will fit more in line with the newer tomb king sets!
Completely agree, I was interested until I saw that 95% of the sculpts were 20+ years old at modern prices.
I would have been tempted if they re-released Chaos Dwarfs but with a chunk of people's favourites factions not being supported it's not giving me what I (personally) want for this game system.
I think it's nice that some people who held onto their old armies get a new lease of life and some new games, and "support" from GW
But not enough for me to get into the game from square one
Totally agree on all those points!
I have no interest in playing The Old World myself, but....
- I am glad that it exists (to make that group of Warhammer fans happy)
- I hope that it is successful (so that all armies get their opportunity to shine and so that GW learns that taking risks and follow fan demand can pay off)
- and I am actually interested in hearing about it occasionally. (Following it from afar, so to say.)
All totally valid points. It looks very exciting on the surface but I think I'm most keen to see how it's all handled. Roadmaps, releases, events etc. So far it seems very promising but we're still in the twilight phase.
It's easy - Play Kings of War instead and enjoy a properly supported game with an actual 10 years of development and community building and as of last year absolutely top notch minis.
Not the first time we’ve seen that as a solution 😂
I wasn't too interested in the old world, i played it as a kid and moved into 40k and 40k is what i play with friends, then... the article they put out about the orc and goblin released and I saw all the stuff i wanted but never got, all the nostalgia and now I'm thinking about painting up some stuff again 😅
It's always the nostalgia hit isn't it! GW know exactly what they're doing 😂
Looking at the rules this looks like one of the most thought through and most fun rulesets I've seen from GW in recent years.
I'm going to have a lot of fun with it and theres so many amazing sculpts for the game outside of GW which adds loads to it in my opinion.
I'm just hype right now, like lord of the rings this is going to be a community lead game which I think is great.
The ruleset really does look like a lot of fun!
Nostalgia is a powerful drug, but it wears off fast. TOW will level out like all the other specialist games do.
It certainly is. Time will tell eh!
I worry more that all these games mean their resources are spread thin, and consequently the quality of the everything else suffers...
Assuming their as in GW right? I think the special characters seem to be sat with the Specialist Games division in the creative team at GW. Tbh everything they release is fire so I've got no reservations there.
I think in regards to quality they've been pretty transparent that the majority of TOW will be old returning sculpts. The other game systems shouldn't be affected at all?
@@the_kieran_show maybe what the original commenter meant is the production of all models? Personally, I havent seen Legiones Imperialis stuff come back at all in any of my local stores and they say theyre just not getting it from GW. Could they be trying to do too much and not be able to produce enough models for each game? who knows...
Ooooh I see! Yeah I think that the stock issues will absolutely persist after throwing this on the fire aswell.
Yeh sorry for the late reply, but yeh production has been terrible and more and more games to produce for is just going to make it worse
I agree
I only got into Warhammer a few years ago so never got to experience Fantasy. But won’t be buying into Oldworld. I wanted to get a second game system other than 40K and was waiting for the release of Oldworld before I chose and I inevitably went for AOS! Think it’s pretty poor that they have re released old models for that price and I love the AOS range and lore, personally I think Oldworld will make AOS more popular as that getting removed was why it was hated so much and I think a lot of people will look at the model ranges and see the quality and potential of AOS!
AoS as a secondary game is a great choice though, the models are sooooo different to everything else
@@the_kieran_show totally agree, I don’t get why it gets so much hate personally I think the lore of the setting now is great and the model range to me is better than 40K. Particularly love that GW gives each faction some TLC and doesn’t just focus on the poster faction as much as they do 40K.
What i think is promising is the negativity about the models from people who maybe don't understand the scope and goals of the project has mostly been drowned out by people really enjoying the game. I am building an army and although i would love a full army of 100% Classic Models, it's just not possible and i don't want to mix aesthetics so i am using AoS stuff and converted minis so it fits in with my other collections. Also Minis aren't Iphones, a good mini is a good mini forever, same for a bad, the Tomb King Skeletons and Horsemen were ALWAYS bad minis. That said although i think the Mounted Yeomen are absolutely gorgeous A) the Old Metal Men at Arms, 5th Ed Bowmen and 5th Ed Knights aren't available to go with them B) i aint paying £12 a model!
For clarity out of the gate the game does look like alot of fun and is something one of us at least will be looking into really soon. But you are right around the older models, when they look bad and/or cost a fortune its crazy to not source some home brew alternatives!
Which army are you going for and which AoS models have taken your fancy? 😊
Personally I haven't played warhammer since AOS was released. I hope this can return a spark to me, I still love the world but AOS is not my thing and while i've bought some 40k Army books just to read I don't have much interest in playing 40k as it is now.
a Game of warhammer should take 4-6 turns if it is done by turn 2 theres a design flaw in the game that make it not worth playing as it's to much time spend on transport and setting up and packing away minitures.
Did you pick up any Old World books?
@@the_kieran_show
Not yet, as I decided I would wait and hear otherrs opinions first.
My biggest warhammer fantasy army is Dark Elves. Though I am a bit curious about the Bretonia vs Tomb Kings. It's an interesting match up
Members of my local FLG seem very excited for Old World, so I'm going to give it a go and see... did not play fantasy, so have no nostalgia for this.
I think it's definitely a relative thing for sure, the old school fantasy lovers seem to be in a very happy place right now.
The old models not being refreshed (Like a lot of 40k model ranges are getting currently) is the biggest turn off for me with ToW. I've built and painted some old Tomb Kings skeleton warriors to go in my Bonereaper AoS army, and those models were just about ok. But those old kits along with metal-on-plastic minis from GW in 2024 is just too far.
I think its the same with most people tbh! It's definitely split us down the middle, will be exciting to see what's to come though.
if you do any challenge from this, maybe do a "how long does it take to paint 1 bretonnian knight"... no one has the time to do this whole box set, and the old models look just sad.. people need to be a little more realistic with their gaming endevours.. GW is pumping out more boxes than we can handle...
Nice idea! I think you've got a point around the boxes, there seems to be a huge influx in limited releases lately, looking forward to the regular release curve again.
i dont feel spoiled when it comes to miniature quality by gw. the whole digital sculpting thing leaves us with crisp details, real proportions and an overall completely soulless look. i take old wonky handsculpted models over modern minis every day of the week.
+ modern gw designs are just terrible, they started to go of the rails when it came to their over all style somewhere around 7th/8th edition of fantasy. stuff started to look more and more like over the top warcraft stuff then actual warhammer fantasy. a change which concluded with aos were basically everey single release looks like ass to me.
this is of course a matter of taste but im more than happy to be able to buy models i like again and dont have to rely on the second hand marked for everything
Each to their own I guess, at least we are lucky enough to have the choice 😁
Never been less interested in a range but whatever floats your boat I suppose. But the 1st person I hear complaining about getting brand new sculps and being crazy expensive but will gleefully pay for this box will hear me. Am i right in thinking this is the most expensive box yet?Apart from 2 models the rest are garbage those skeletons look like the 1s in dumbo's dream and the horse's are worse
They are very expensive boxes, that being said they both have ALOT of plastic, book, box bits too. I see the value in them, but the old models are hot butt as we've mentioned in this video.
My only interest in the old world is if they rerelease the empire militia sprues; they're great for kit-bashing all sorts of figures. As for the game, I get my rank & flank fix elsewhere.
Im sure they will!
I’ve been binge watching your channel, great content guys. But wow, you really are so wrong on this one.
The old simpler designs are actively preferred by the community because you need to bash these guys out in big regiments, busy models don’t work as well in batch paining (as you well know) and you can’t see them behind the first rank anyway. As for everyone already having an army… We haven’t had access to our toys since 2012, even if you have an army you’re both sick of playing your old force and want to fill some gaps.
Also Warhammer total war is massive, so loads of fans can actually play their favourite factions from the game on the table top. Well sadly not, it’s completely sold out.
Also you see crap old designs, I’ve been salivating over massively over priced eBay lots for years. Even basic old tomb king skeletons have a mystical old nostalgic charm to me. So yeah, GW massively under estimated demand. I think the old world is going to have real legs, I can see it taking second place behind 40k.
To clarify we think it's a really good thing especially for the fans of Fantasy, the rule set is solid and we're not intentionally yucking anyone's yum. The models aren't for us and that's fine too! Half of us at least have been dipping their toe in the setting, the rule set is solid and some of the hobby I've seen from the community so far has been fire. I think you might be right, this'll be around for a while.
Old-world is 100% a money grab, having to pay current prices for models that look like they've been sculpted from playdo by Stephen Hawkins is absolutely outrageous! It'll die in a couple of years after they've sold enough playdo characters
There are more Stephen Hawking secrets by the day so at this rate he might have!
Haha, jokes on them. I still got my unpainted wood elf’s from 4’th in my pile of potential…. 😅
Old World sucks. Good video though 😂
Thanks for the support 😂😂
