The Mental Health Crisis Among Latina Teens

  • When it comes to mental health, Latina teens in the U.S. have disproportionately high rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide attempts compared to their male counterparts and white peers -- which is a big deal considering 1 in 4 Gen Zers in the U.S. are Latino.
VICE goes to Milwaukee to learn about some of the challenges facing this growing young population and delve into the experiences of two first-generation Latina teens as they grapple with their own mental health experiences.

I’m Mexican and I grew up being told that I need to get closer to god and go to church everytime I ever felt depressed. Never did I hear do you want to talk about it ? why do you feel like this ? I love you it’s fine we will help you get threw it .
We are always told to suck it up or made fun of .

I’m African-American and many of us have the same beliefs about mentally health such as “just pray about it”, thinking it’s not real, etc.

Show me a Doctor that has cured depression. Doesn't exist. God gives meaning. Doctors give you pills making your highs higher and lows lower. Without it? Your life permanently duller.

Parenting, society, life at home, its crazy. Seeing all these girls reminds me of middle school and things have not changed and things are still bad.

I can relate to this in so many levels. My anxiety spikes up when I see cops because I’m afraid I will never see my dad again because he’ll get deported. It can be my dad doing nothing then a cop passing by scares me so much. I never knew there are many people out there that can relate to me. Thank you for doing this documentary, mil gracias.

Also first generation kids are abused or mentally abused that you HAVE TO DO BETTER AND GIVE IT 100% or else ur trash. My mom would hit me hard enough to get a bloody nose. Idk if i had concussions but symptoms that you get from concussions i never knew until recently that would match with what i had as a kid really opend my mind like dam...I probably woulda been normal but now i have anxiety and depression
    again.

This really is more than tragic, when people are afraid to call help when they are hurt. The facts can’t be denied - life is difficult for many Latinas. That doesn’t discount other people in pain. Just be mindful

Such an important issue to highlight. I’m middle eastern and I have a lot of mental health challenges as well marginalized communities feel excluded and have a lot of intense pressures. I recommend people look up and watch Johann hari and read his book called lost connections

It’s so gross that she tells the CHILD that she has to remember that her dad being mad means he is worried. Why should a child be a bigger person, compared to an adult???? Can’t they do better???

yeah since anger doesn't have to mean only worry lies under it. specially latin dads have problems with anger.... one cannot generalize it tbh.

I've had many latina friends in high school who've dealt with depression and thought of suicide, one of them was my girlfriend. I wanted to help her and love her, but i kept making things worse without realizing. She became so toxic and wouldn't understand me. It's fucked up that people like her exist.

@Jessica Buettner i would go through the ropes of whatever country i was trying to enter and become a citizen of. There is a right way to become a citizen. Jumping the border isnt the correct way. Tons of people wait in line to become a citizen the correct way. Border jumpers say "fuck you" to those people.
