Visiting France's "Most Dangerous City"...

- We booked tickets to Marseille only to discover afterwards it's poor reputation for crime and safety. This made us incredibly nervous and the more we researched the more bad we found. After hours of research, I was nearly dreading our trip, but like anywhere we go, we wanted to give Marseille a chance and treat it with caution.
We left Marseille feeling fulfilled, inspired, and sad to go so soon. Going in with such low expectations left us feeling quite appreciative of everything there is to see. The city is old with modern and impressively progressive features and overall the city is a multicultural hub. To us, the city was flowing with art, creativity, and music. People were fashionably dressed, expressive, and incredibly kind to us (even though we don’t speak a word of French).
It’s always important for us to go into places with an open mind, ready to form our own opinions apart from those on the internet. Like any city Marseille has its bad areas, but we are so grateful these didn’t deter us from experiencing everything she has to offer.
Howdy! We're Jenna & Andrew and we create travel vlogs. With this channel we hope to do more than just the typical bucket list. We set out to better understand the culture, language, and most importantly the people of the places we travel to. If you're American and from Philly, Detroit, L.A. or Miami. You won't have issues to adapt in Marseille.
or Houston 😆
We kinda thought that too lol
That’s not true as only Detroit and Philly have a higher crime index than Marseille
tbh as long as u avoid the northern districts where there is crime over drug feuds the city is like any other european city, take precaution around metro and certain markets
The issue is that you don't know wtf their saying to you while they're picking your pockets. 😂
You mean that Marseilles is ghetto???
Odd title when I visited in 2007 everyone was very polite and friendly. Almost everyone spoke some English if not fluent in English. The old city was beautiful, and the newer side of the city was extremely charming. Next time I go back to Europe I will definitely be visiting Marseille. I also visited during Carnival, which is their summer celebration, and supposedly the most dangerous time to visit. Marseille reminds me of my hometown of San Antonio Texas.
Oh cool we are from TX and I lived in San Antonio for awhile too 😊
Yeah we had a great experience too! We titled it like this because upon researching prior to our trip a bunch of articles about it being the most dangerous city in France kept popping up. It was very unsettling but we went anyways and LOVED it
I visited Marseille in 2017 and I loved it! I didn't feel unsafe at any point I was there; I would highly recommend visiting, it's beautiful and the museum of the history of Marseille is incredible.
We will definitely need to check out the museum next time we go :)
Such quiet beautiful city 🌆 would love to visit someday thanks guys
Thanks yall!
Thriving rap scene in these French cities too, has been that way for as long as America's, is Rap culture tourism a thing, or just another one of my bad ideas ? 🤔🤐🗼🎤🔥
@@Pressplay_Media_EU sounds like a cool idea to me 😎
Awesome - we had no idea about that, thanks for sharing!
how much have you paid for the apartment's rent?
great video!
going to Marseille in three weeks so your video was helpful :))
thanks so much! have a blast!
And, did you enjoy Marseille? :)
@@Snowshowslow yes, you should definitely go! I was for 3-4 days and it was brilliant !
@@modazielarka5448 Good to hear :D We'll be going to Avignon soon, maybe we'll make a day trip :)
The only concept I had of Marseille was from Count of Monte Cristo, of which I’m a massive fan. To no surprise the city had changed this then but I LOVED it! It helps that I had zero clue about its shady reputation. Best parts were riding scooters through Le Painer, eating dinner at the Old Port, and cliff jumping near Calanque. Calanque happened to be closed that day bc of forest fires or something like that so we made the most of the trek we made out and just jumped in and swam around right across from Il Maire. It was beautiful!
Wow that is so amazing :) We definitely want to go back on eday for the Calanques
Was in Marseille 2 years ago (tempted by cheap flights) and there wasn’t even a moment I did not feel safe! Fell in love with the city actually! ❤
Thanks for the video. Really enjoyable. I'm planning to visit in the spring and the video was inspiring. Thanks again
Thank you so much Kevin 😊 I really appreciate it
Vive le France! Much luv from California ,San Diego
For a student considering a semester abroad hosted by Universitie Provence Aix / Marseille, does anyone please know if the school is any good? Is Aix nicer and / or safer than the Marseille campus which is apparently in the 3rd arrondissement? And is Aix or Marseille notorious for drugs whether used or pushed upon the community of students?
Aix is safe
Fait amusent :
Bradley Cooper a étudier a aix en provence !
Et oui aix est un peut le replis des plus aisés.
Mais marseille, ville a éviter, mal fréquenté en general…
The first time i ever went to france was when i was a few months old, i have there TONS of time and i had never ever had any trouble i go ever summer to see my family
Nice blog . Me too I wasn’t sure for Marseille because didn’t know about it being safe or not but definitely going now. I’m a French Canadian so language won’t be an issue except for the accent 😅
Yay that's awesome :) Enjoy your time there
Je suis aller à Montréal, votre pays est magnifique
Great video I will subscribe
Thank you! :)
Crimes figures in Marseille are mainly about the gang fights in the external neighborhoods (witch is still terrific ). Out of the station, tourist are not THAT much a target , I mean not a lot more than any big city. Medias and tv sell a lot about the unsafety and unsecurity in Marseille
I am a scouser and marseille is so recognisable to me as a city with cultural diversity.
Cool video! We are her now, first day! Similar kind of first impressions.
Did you enjoy your experience in Marseille?
@@JourneywithJenandDrew Oh yes! City of contrasts, got a few nice photographs as well!

Did you visited the calanques?
No 😢😢 We did not have time but we would love to return one day to visit!
I was going to ask the same thing! Went to Marseilles several years ago, around Oct. It was warm enough so I headed out to the Calanques and took a boat trip to Chateau d'If (an old castle used as the setting of the Count of Monte Cristo). I enjoyed the city very much!
Jen and Drew what city are you from ?
We are from Houston
It's only bad if you go to the neighbourhoods up north (quartiers nord)
Been to Marseille twice and loved it.
So awesome :)
Marseille is know for its dangerous places like ghettos and hoods but they are not in the center of Marseille. In the center you will almost everytime feel fully comfortable and safe. The dangerours parts are when you leave the center and go to some places that looks poor. Yeah then I would pay attention at all cost.
This is untrue. Many of the poorest and dirtiest neighbourhoods are right in the centre. There are people sleeping on mattresses outside of St Charles Station. People on drink and drugs will approach you and rant at you even in the tourist spots. In one afternoon I even saw violence. Don't try to sugarcoat it. It's a scandal.
haven't mentioned French Connection 2 _________________Ce popeye , c'est le bits !
What people say about places and actually experiencing it is worlds apart. Personally Marseille was such a great trip.
I totally agree❤️
Marseille have the greatest rapper alive SCH.
Omg Hes sooo pretty 🐈
😻
Marseille est l'une des plus belles villes de france parmi les plus vieilles cités de France voir d'Europe d'origine grecque vousnserez toujours les bienvenus les touristes les fous sont partout mais l'écrasante majorité est bienveillante et encore merci
Merci :)
Marseille's touristic area ain't really where the crime happens , The north side is where it goes with a murder rate of 10 to 24 murder for 100 000 people and a population of 250 000 as dangerous as Atlanta or Chicago and i guess that why the city has such a reputation 🤷🏾♂️
Did you see Jason Borne ? Asking for a friend if someone is listening . 😳
😆
We were told that Marseille has changed, too many "be aware"
We heard that a lot too, but really enjoyed our time there. :)
Wrong. Anywhere outside La Periphery is 100 times more DANGEROUS than beautiful old M
I live in Marseille
Come to Winnipeg
We'd love to😁
C'est Marseille BB, Le sang de la vigne ❤
I ve been on that bus station and its enough for me Junk and danger
You went basically to one of the dirtiest, stressfull and unfriendly part of the city
Marseille is not the most dangerous city in France, but rather it is the 13th (while it is the 2nd largest city in France and the 3rd most populated city)
It's SEVILLE in English.
I speak Spanish and am from the UK but I know for a fact that at the start, when you say "Sevee-ya", a lot of English-speaking people won't understand where you mean...
Correct!! 👍🏻
I ve been many times in Marseille and nothing happened…
Americans discovering Europe. Lots of videos like this on youtube young couples visiting Europe and being dramatically funny with their observations.
Thanks, I like to think we are dramatically funny too 🙂
Why you don’t go to Romania with Sibiu, Brasov, Constanta or Bukarest? It’s beautiful too, or Bulgarian 🇧🇬 with golden Sands, beach there!
We will try to go one day :)
At least in Eastern Europe beside
The amazing food, people, scenary, castles etc you are not being killed, robbed, stabbed.
just remember something, we don’t have any money, any love or any work. don’t play with us, and more your not french more you gonna be target.
Next video from amateurs.. why you not go to 13th,14th,15th.. ,,Castellet,, And talking ONLY from centre
... You never go back ,if you visit neigborhoods
Which is why we didn't go!
You can still visit and enjoy a city without seeing its rougher parts
Just stay away from the Northern part of the city (Arr. 16/15/14/3) and certain parts of 11/13 & 9. I mean that. The title of this video is not clickbait. Trust me.
Ask around when you visit. 1/4/7/6/5 are safe and offer the most interesting attractions for visitors.
Basically stay away from the entire city😂
wait what are these areas??? Im going to marseille soon and already have a place booked near the saint charles station.... is this a safe areA?
oh i just looked at a map im ok :D thank you!!!!
Your video left me feeling a bit sad. The way you depict Marseille is unfair. This city is full of contrasts and is a real melting pot. Did you travel to the Calanques? Did you visit Le MUCEM and Les Terraces du Port? Le Vieux Port maybe? Le Roucas Blanc? La plage du Prado et La Corniche Kennedy? Now, I am not sure how long you stayed and what was your budget like but Le Palais Longchamp?? Seriously??? How did you end there? That part was actually funny. Now, I give it to you, some areas in Marseille are to scratch off the map and keep away from. I also refer to it as a dangerous city because it is. I was born and raised there, know it like the back of my hand, and won't recommend it to anyone looking for a smooth vacation. I also lived in NYC, Brooklyn for many years and it felt so much safer than Marseille. That said, you cannot take the beauty out of it and should not describe it in such ways after having seen so little of it. It's unfair.
Hi! Did you watch the whole video? We said spoke highly of marseille and wish to return in the future to see more!
Have a good day
Yes, watched it all and also read your text :) Good day to you as well.@@JourneywithJenandDrew
The oldest city in France is Béziers
No its Marseille in 600bc
@@Backrooms_Francais It' Béziers now, founded in the 7th century BCE, before Marseille.
@@martingimenez339 yes but we don't know their precise ages, we just know that they were founded in 600 BC but maybe Béziers is barely a few years older than Marseille, maybe the opposite
👍🏽😎
Thank you 😊
Marseille is a city bustling with anxiety. After visiting so many cities across Europe, I have never experienced such impatient citizens. Everybody seemed to be in a rush in this city which is famous for probably nothing except for garlic- and saffron-flavoured fish stew called bouillabaisse. A city which predominantly is the second largest city and the oldest city in France and also boasts a port has nothing to offer to its tourists except cat calls, union strikes, poor uber facilities, lack of civic sense and very poor infrastructural facilities. When I planned to visit this city in-spite of so many mixed reviews, I always thought that this city will have something to offer to its visitors, but alas my worst nightmare has come true. As I gasp for some freshness in this city, I am only welcomed by a nagging sense of insecurity and fear of harm. This city, in a nutshell, is not at all tourist-friendly and a city to be left alone on its own. The local residents are happy among their own as they show no intention to welcome dreamy-eyed traveler who wants to explore the hidden beauty of Marseille.
There is no beauty hidden, that’s the point, Marseille is loved or hated, that’s always been
One of the biggest stereotype on the marseillais is that they’re lazy, always late and like to take their time. I don’t even understand how you can consider the city as impatient.
Marseille hosts 8 millions tourists each year, not bad for a city that should be left on its own.
You just didn’t take the time to learn anything about the city.
I have my little idea on why you disliked it, but I will shut my mouth 🤫
I'm glad you didn't stayed ...
an Indian complaining about Marseille...what a joke LOL
i’m from marseille😢
We loved it ❤️❤️
i hope you enjoyed 😉
oh and i recommend you go to intercontinental hotel diet it’s really nice
i mean dieu
lol you serious ? most dangerous city ? if you go to Quartiers Nords maybe, but nothing about Marseille proper is dangerous.. it's the best city in France for its people, scenery, sea, activities... you shouldn't feed into these fake "reputations" and spread them ..
Hi, just wandering if you actually watched the video? Haha
@@JourneywithJenandDrew I did. I wrote this midway. But like I said, I don't know if you chose that title to get more clicks but even mentioning that so-called "reputation" isn't fair to the city. You still say at the end it's not risk-free, well not any less than anywhere else in France. 🔵⚪️
@sycho67ak We put "Most Dangerous City" in quotes to emphasize that the internet was saying these things. If you google "what is the most dangerous city in France" it always says Marseille, its just statistically true. So when we learned this after booking a ticket we of course got nervous. We made this video to highlight the fact that the city is much more than this silly "reputation". That's the entire point of the video 😊
@@JourneywithJenandDrew I get your point, it's well-made. Next time you visit, make sure you watch a Marseille game at the Velodrome !
Thanks, will do! We definitely want to return
Its is absolutely not the most dangerous city in france, you won't even find it in the top 10
Hi! We just based it off of this and a few other google searches! We still loved the city though. It was amazing ❤️
