Bruce Robison's (the author) version (sung with his wife Kellie Willis) is much more deliberate and while it has a similar blues guitar bridge, it's more subdued. You would probably like it better.

such a good song. and it helped me through a rough patch back in 2013. my husband and i separated after 19 years and 3 boys later....and he was angry all the time. all the time. the split was good for both of us, but not the boys. but we bother got counselling and after 2 1/2 years in 2016, we got back together and we are still together. this song is special in so many ways. thanks for the reaction, Don

Tim McGraw and his team always found great songs that worked for his style of being a top tier performer. He has worked to have had a nice career using that formula.

You should watch/listen to the the real version by the writer and his wife Bruce robinson and Kelly Willis ,half way decent cover but just a Nashville cover of a real Texas song.

I agree with a lo of posters that Bruce Robison's version is better. Would love to see you react to Bruce's brother. Charlie Robison is one of my all time favorite country artists.

Also Bruce's version is a lot more stripped down. And I like Tim, this version just isn't my favorite.

Bruce released at least a couple different versions, and the one with his wife also singing backup is very poignant. Bruce's phrasing is so idiosyncratic, like Willie Nelson's or Bob Dylan's... makes for a less formulaic sound than Tim's (as much as I do like Tim's version)

Excellent reaction Don. This song is so well written. Feels so specific to a person yet never pin points any definative actions or wrongs. As David Emswiler said......
I actually pictured a woman becoming mentaly unstable sometime after having children. I've witnessed this happen to a couple of different women. They were abused or lost a baby, when young. Then when they had another child a few years later all kinds of things came unwound for them. They both started suffering split or multiple personalities disorders. Took years of counseling and therapy to get through. The line about how it hurts me to think of you before the light in your eyes was gone....and how hard it is for the kids to see what you have become. Just rips my heart out. What a song.

@DaveG I think your description very much captures an accurate interpretation especially when applied to what's shown in the video. Bruce R's preferred subject matter is real everyday people doing real everyday things trying to fulfill the social contract that working hard brings equal reward. But the twist that he likes to point out, is that no matter how hard and long you're true to doing the right thing...sometimes you still fail.

First time hearing Tim's version of this song (I do know Bruce Robinson's original) and like several other commenters have already pointed out, Bruce's is much better. His version is slower, more heartfelt, and he has a video that adds some nice imagery to the story. Thank you for pointing out the instrumentation not making sense...that's exactly the feel I got as well. Bruce and his brother Charlie are top-notch Texas singer-songwriters...definitely a fine fit for the channel in the future. The beauty of this song is that the words were very carefully chosen to allow the listener to insert themselves into the story...even to the point that this song can be taken as the wife, the husband, or even both as representing "the angry one".

I'll tell you why the instruments don't make sense. Strait and Jackson described it, " drums and guitars mixed all up in your face", remember? Murder on Music Row!
The writing is great, his voice is country enough, but he's NOT country! His formula for success is completely without the heart that is in true country. It's a formula, and he has no definitive style of his own, just that same pop formula the rest of the crowd does. It won't stand the test of time either.

@kenneth Paul Oh yes, I know about Faith, I was just shocked that she agreed to such a small part on the song given her star status. I truly expected that the producer would have brought in a studio vocalist for this, and given the subject matter I didn't think Tim would want his wife to be part of it. Let that be a lesson to me!

This always takes me back to my ex-marriage. We had two kids and I loved her tremendously but for various reasons, after 10 years of both of our actions damaging the thing that made our love special, we divorced. We both worked hard to get over the stumbling blocks but it just wasn't the same. I kept these feelings inside and she just became an angry miserable person. Neither of us wanted to be the one to give up but after realizing everyone is miserable including our kids, I decided to end it. She went on her way, moved across the country and I raised our two boys. The funny thing is it's been 20 years and I never got me back as the song says. I still live with disappointment and regret.

The lyrics are so different from any country song. A man criticizing his wife, and her relationship with the sons. I’ve never heard anything like it. I think the big instrumental break is the “20 yr passage of time” and the husband saying he still had not completely found himself! And he hadn’t forgiven her. The men of country music usually gives the wives a pass on behavior and take the blame, not this time!! On my top 5 list!! Love the show!!
