      You can’t imagine a world where someone like Harry, with an impressive, well-known story of defying odds to do great things, would not be more universally beloved.
      Hm.
      Maybe we should ask J. K. Rowling if she knows any real life people who have experienced widespread contempt in spite of doing their best to use their gifts, to stand up for what they believe, after overcoming enormous odds.
      I bet she knows of at least one person like that.

    I think what Hagrid meant by nothing would hurt them if they’re with Fang is that anything in the forest powerful enough to hurt them would recognize Fang and think “oh they’re with Hagrid” and leave them alone. So it’s less about Fang’s ability to protect them and more about Fang signaling to the centaurs, acromantulas etc that Neville and Malfoy are with Hagrid.
    (Which given what happens with Aragog a book later is kinda funny)

    I always figured he feared Dumbledore because he was the only person to see flashes of the true Tom Riddle, even if it was only during their first meeting. Dumbledore, as Harry said in Chamber, “saw right through you,” and the fact Voldemort knew he couldn’t control or manipulate him (in addition to Dumbledore being his magical equal, at the very least) terrified him.

    11 year-olds always think they're in a world unto themselves, especially once they find their friend group, but even if that wasn't true, Harry grew up without any adults to help him. Ron always felt overlooked by his family-- even if he ends up being just as spoilt as Malfoy when the chips are down-- and Hermione must have had tiger parents because she's too afraid of being seen as incompetent to ever think of asking anyone for help. So, none of them are going to have a first instinct to go to an adult for help.

    My favorite thing about Dumbledore returning the cloak to Harry is that in the beta days of pottermore when you would go around and click stuff in the scene they depicted it like Harry draped the cloak over a piece of furniture which turned it and the furniture invisible. That implies that Dumbledore was just up there shuffling around with his feet trying not to bump into anything but still having to feel around to find this damn priceless magical artifact that this damn 11 year old left laying around

    I just realised the unicorn blood was to keep Quirrel alive,not Voldemort. We know Voldemort possessing snakes and rats killed them so he probably was killing Quirrel and so Quirrel drank the unicorn blood to stay alive
    Edit: In the past,teachers could beat up children with canes in the UK. Being hung by chains in the basement isn't as much of a stretch as you might think

    • @Baalslegion07
      @Baalslegion07 Před 8 měsíci +11

      Yeah, hitting children was much more culturally accepted and common than any of us might wish to admit. Here in germany, beatings weren't uncommon at all until the 50s and even some schools did it in the 60s. There are some old folk talking about their fingers being splintered, some had lasting injuries from this.
      The teachers had the right to beat them on their bare butt, on stretched out fingers and even slap them both on the back of the head and the cheek. Pulling and pinching someones ears and nose were also a thing. Public humiliation was also part of it, like the stereotypical dunce cap still seen in older cartoons - in germany it was a pair of donkey ears that was most commonly used. It was a rather common thing in germany and europe as a whole.
      Its absolutely horrendous and wrong. It was never meant to leave lasting damage, but it absolutely did, both physically at times and definitly psychologically. In germany it was even done for not having clean and neatly cut fingernails, which were checked every morning. And this wasn't some Nazi thing, they did it too of course and went further, but it was something everyone did. If you misbehaved, your parents hit you and verbally abused you. If you did it at school, your teacher would do that. It's absolutely crazy looking back, but at the time, it wasn't seen that way by most folk.
      I think putting someone in chains and lock them in a dungeon or hanging them from their thimbs is more of a medieval torture method, that wouldn't be used in schools, but this is clearly JK Rowling parodying this kind of mentality. Just like the ministry of magic is a parody of insanely incompetent politicians and weird rules and the overall disorganized british government and the money system is a parody of the old english money system, which wasn't that far off of the weird sickle to galeon excgange rates.
      This overly cruel punishment system is a parody of older european penal systems for children. Also, considering Filch has to be about 60 if not older and this takes place in the 90s, its isn't unthinkable at all that he has actually seen punishments like those be done to students... its still weird to imagine Dumbledore being fine with this, but it isn't at all out of the realm of possibility, I mean, Dumbledore would have seen this done even more commonly, when he was young.

    Something to think about and ponder about the Bloody Baron is that he is the only ghost of the 4 that commited murder in life as well as the only one to commit suicide. As such he carries the chains of his guilt with him. This may give him some addtional ability to "harm" or cause discomfort to other spirits. Even Nearly Headless Nick is scared of the Baron.

    I think the reason that they never go to the teachers is because the books were originally written for children. As adults we recognize that we have the power/ability to fix things. I always assumed the late night punishment thing was in the same vein of the old school punishments you hear about sometimes where you make a kid smoke a whole box of cigarettes or something. The idea being, "Oh you think it's fun to be out of bed getting into potentially dangerous hijinks, well I'll show you some dangerous hijinks and maybe next time you'll think twice about it."

    It's worth noting that McGonagall doesn't just think they've been out of bed after hours. She has come up with a story as to why, involving Harry and Hermione luring Malfoy out of bed specifically to get *him* in trouble, basically exactly what Malfoy tried to do to them earlier in The Midnight Duel. I always assumed Avada Kedavra wouldn't have worked on Fluffy because big monsters are magically resistant. Quirrel probably could have AKed a person but it wouldn't work against something like a dragon because a dragon has magic resistance. I assume that magic resistance is something common amongst big monsters. They're own internal magic counteracts external magical attacks.

    • @lewisbeer6156
      @lewisbeer6156 Před 8 měsíci +4

      @@anivijudi this I've always taken as the reason, which is also likely why it was a beast like Fluffy that guarded the entrance, and why the whole harp/music gig was so necessary, being a beast so mythological connected, like dragons they are likely incredibly potent in magic, and thus resistant to magic. Hagrid is HALF giant and it takes like, 6 stunning spells to evenly mildly subdue him, so for a literal Cereberus to be resilient to more powerful dark magic makes sense. Hence why he guards the trapdoor, he would be insurpassable if the music thing hadn't been blabbed

    • @jaspermooren5883
      @jaspermooren5883 Před 8 měsíci +5

      Yeah I think that makes sense. And killing the dog seems unnecessary since they know a very effective way anyway. And we don't even know if Quirrell can cast Avada Kedavra at all as mentioned in the podcast, let alone be powerful enough to kill a magical creature like that. There's nothing that indicates that Quirrell is an exceptional wizard of any kind. He's 'just a teacher'. And at this point in the story Voldemort is definitely not strong enough to kill Fluffy. I mean all Voldemort could do to kill Harry is ask Quirrell to strangle him... To me there's basically no way he could have defeated Fluffy in battle.

    • @lewisbeer6156
      @lewisbeer6156 Před 8 měsíci +2

      @@jaspermooren5883 that also tracks, I don't know how well established the power scaling of AK is in the lore, as JnB say in the pod "Moody" says the whole thing about the not being able to kill him if they just pointed the wand and said the words cos of the need for malice and meaning to it. But I don't know how well it would scale with power in this instance. Like if wizards are more powerful than others, does that mean their magic is MORE potent, so could AK not kill fluffy for like 99% of wizards, but someone like, Dumbledore or a full strength Voldy be able to take out a beast with magical resistance like Fluffy with the same spell based off sheer power? I pride myself on my potter knowledge but I cannot say if that's true

    The fight-or-flight reactions are actually five. Fight, flight, freeze, flop, fawn.

    • @keithg460
      @keithg460 Před 8 měsíci +3

      I think no one has heard of flop or fawn because those seem more like something you have to think of. I doubt many if any people's natural instinct is to make someone happy. And playing dead really only works if you are already on the ground and looking dead, which could be an extension of Freeze.
      Fight or Flight or Freeze are things we do without having to think at all. Our brains do it for us.

    I had to pause the video to type this. But I always thought Voldemort was partially scared of Dumbledore because Dumbledore knew things about him that nobody else did. For example, Dumbledore found out about his thievery and bullying, that he could speak to snakes and such. He didn’t have his guard up at that time. Dumbledore could see past his charming facade and could call his bluff when nobody else could. And as you said, Dumbledore is the strongest wizard. I think those things made Voldemort so fearful of Dumbledore because he could undoubtedly stop him or subdue him if he so desired.

    I have a theory on how the resurrection stone was made, and it revolves around the unicorns blood curse. We know the other 2 deathly hallows are made with thestral parts, so it would be safe to assume the stone was too. I believe it's a stone from a thestrals stomach, after consuming unicorn. Much like a bezoar or ambergris. We know thestrals are drawn to blood and eat meat. The thing is, this would never happen naturally as both these animals are quite rare, and as Hagrid states hes never known a unicorn to be hurt. So the second brother the arrogant man that wanted to humiliate death, started forcing the half life blood curse on the animal associated with death and bad omens. Thus making a deathly cursed stone. I know it's a little dark, but lots of things in the story have dark backgrounds *cough cough horcrux*

    We have established that Peeves, the poltergeist, was formed from the natural boisterousness and mischievousness of students in a (magical) school. The Bloody Baron would have been one of the earliest students and/or staff members of the school, when Peeves had only started to form and wasn't very strong. It could be that the Baron taught the half-formed Peeves a lesson he never forgot.
    Or perhaps the Baron, wearing bloody chains to help atone for his sins, is anathema to the spirit of mischief -- it's all fun and games till someone loses an eye, and the Baron has lost more than that.

    I always assumed that the name Bloody Baron was a nickname, just as Helena was the "Grey Lady." As someone already posted, a Baron is the lowest level of nobility. So, calling someone who goes crazy like the Baron did the Bloody Baron wasn't out of respect, but out of irony. He wasn't good enough for Helena. My guess is that, unlike Helena, he leaned into the nickname to play the role of the scary ghost. Meanwhile, Helena absolutely hated her nickname, and when you compare how she was described while living to how she is as a ghost, it seems her personality changed from being driven to be better than her mom to grumpy and morose. Why couldn't the Baron have gone from a crazy dude with an unhealthy crush to being the biggest, baddest ghost around.

    Later in the series, Draco always seems uncomfortable around Fenrir Greyback, so I have a head canon that he has a bit of a phobia of werewolves (maybe a phobia that developed specifically from meeting Greyback as a child, since Greyback is supposedly friends with Lucius), and perhaps JK Rowling had already decided on this aspect of Draco's character while writing the first book.

    • @JessicaClark-lq4gw
      @JessicaClark-lq4gw Před 8 měsíci +2

      I believe we find out the answer to the first part of your question from Voldemort himself. After the curse rebounded he had only one thought. To get away. He ended up in the forest in Albania where Helena Ravenclaw had hidden the Diadem probably because it was the furtherest place "away" he could think of. As for how Quirrell found him Quirrell answers that himself. He was young and ambitious and nieve and had heard rumours of Voldemort being in Albania so went looking to try and find him. Whether to capture him or learn from him is never said directly. Though i think it is implied by Quirrell he wanted to capture him originally. Then Voldemort taught him a few things and Quirrell brought him back to England. Voldemort only started possessing Quirrell after the failure at Gringotts. The same rumours Quirrell heard are also what directed Wormtail toward Albania after Prisoner. Wormtail did find Voldy quicker than Quirrell though because of the rats.

    With the Peeves and Baron question, my theory is that certain powerful magic can, at the very least, harm or temporarily dispel a poltergeist. Though a poltergeist is always likely to be at Hogwarts, it's already been proven that one can be dispelled and that the new one is different from the last so getting rid of Peeves would make him disappear even if a new poltergeist is born anew. Peeves seems to not want to be banished and cease existing, and so fears anyone who can truly make that a reality. That's why he fears Dumbledore. Like Ben, I think the Baron must have held that kind of power, (or perhaps still holds it even as a ghost) and that's why Peeves listens to him.

What do you guys think: since most of the people were afraid to form families and having kids during Voldemorts time, after he “passed” in 1981 (Harry was one), next year there would be a baby boom, so Hogwarts would start having more kids at school starting Harry’s third year and there would be more people who would be not in Slytherin from now on?

    At least in this book, not going to Dumbledore makes sense when you consider that telling the truth would implicate Hagrid as their main source of information that they aren't supposed to have. As far as the kids know, they'd be getting Hagrid fired by coming clean.

    Having Snape be a red herring in these books is not just setup for a reveal at the end of the book but evidence to support the belief at the end of book 6.
    It's easy to finish the Philosophers Stone and say "oh, haha it wasn't Snape after all!" But there needs to be enough clues that even though he's cleared in this book, when he flees with the death eaters, you question every thing in every other book. No, he wasn't the one trying to steal the stone directly but it still needs to look like he was helping to steal it. That is until we find out he is just finding out information for Dumbledore.
    There's like 3 layers to it...

    The idea of a watcher is not uncommon in fantasy or just in mythology, though they can take different forms. Now, I'm not super well read on greek mythology, and I don't know what role, if any, centaurs play there, but I have read The Illiad and the Odyssey and the greek Gods are just always watching, and they are technically not supposed to intervene with what has been decided, but frequently do so anyway if they favor some character, either by giving them inside information or just by giving them a power boost or some divine protection against harm.

    OMG!! 😆 The thought of Snape just quietly “hanging out” in a colorful LAWN chair 🪑 is JUST HILARIOUS!!! 🤣 Also, in the movie, of course, Ron DOES go to the Forbidden Forrest INSTEAD of Neville; they COMPLETELY leave Neville out of this scene in the movie. And I LOVE Ron trying to confort him by saying “Don’t worry, Fred & George have lost LOADS of points for Gryffindor.” And Harry replies with, “But never in ONE night, right??” 😅 Also, didn’t you guys do a video about whether or not Quirrell COULD kill Fluffy . . . I feel like I’m remembering this specific video from you guys . . . 🤔 And I also love Hermione’s respond to Hagrid saying, “This is Bane. He’s a Centaur.” Hermione’s responds with, “We’ve noticed.” I just think that’s response is SO funny!! 🤣 Also, the idea of Hogwarts being a protection as well as a school COULD explain the chains in the dungeons, as a punishment for wizards/witches who do bad things. Like the chains are not meant for the students, but for the adults who do evil magic against muggles or something . . . 🤔 The thought of the Bloody Barren just being a complete jokester is also HILARIOUS; I LOVE that idea!! 😅😍 And there’s also just a pack of wolves 🐺 living IN the forest, I think . . . I think they’re actually wolf PUPS produced BY 2 werewolves . . . 🤔😊

    Maybe Quirrel used the music so he could go past Fluffy multiple times to see what the next obstacles were. That way if he couldn’t get all the way through, he could always just leave, plan more, and then try again. For example, when he gets to the mirror at the end. if Harry hadn’t shown up then he couldn’t have gotten the stone and would’ve had to leave. but since fluffy was alive, the troll would wake up, and the chess board would reset no one would know he entered

    Neville had to be out in the forest too because of the Prophecy. The centaurs say that star gazing is not an exact science and eventually Harry does face Voldemort in the forbidden forest and dies but this after it is established to us readers that he is in fact the chosen one. They just were reading the stars ahead of schedule. I wonder if all the details of the prophecy and Harry vs Neville we’re not full established yet so there could be the possibility that Neville would play a bigger role in which case he needed to also be in the forest that night per prophecy and had Draco not scared him, he may have been the one to face Voldemort rather than Harry.

    Watchers are a somewhat common plot element, but they also often do interfere at some point. For example the time lords in Doctor Who swore to not interfere… but then they constantly do. The prime directive in Star trek basically says to watch (because they need to see when someone develops a warp drive or becomes a threat), but not interfere… but then Kirk and others constantly do.

    I have a theory as to why they’re sent into the forbidden forest as detention for staying out late… could it be that in order to impress upon the students the dangers of being out alone at night in the castle or grounds, they simply feel the best way to do it is show them the actual dangers around in the presence of a “responsible” adult? Seems like a teachable moment kind of situation? Or maybe just to impress upon Harry the dangers around because while he is the chosen one that only means that voldemort can’t kill him, not that his own stupid head diving into dangerous situations can’t oil him, coz those very much could kill him

    About Bloody Baron theories: I wonder if he really was "Fred and George before Fred and George" - and Weasley twins were compared to James and Sirius - would that make the Baron kind of James Potter of his time and Helena Ravenclaw then Lily Evans of her time? James was popular and a joker (also a bully...) and Lily was bright and beautiful witch; and so were the Baron and Helena. Helena's blood status isn't revealed iirc but she might have been half-blood, too, although the same might be for the Baron. And then Baron & Helena's love story just had not so happy ending. Well I mean Lily and James have their tragedies, too, but they do end up together, got married and had a son so compared to what happened with the two ghosts..
    I don't know if there is anything to it but just tickled my mind when you speculated about the Baron and I wanted to share these thoughts.

    I think Voldemort is afraid of Dumbledore due to his visit at the orphanage. He is the first wizard he meets and he is very intimidating despite being polite. He shows Tom he knows exactly what he has been doing to the other kids and taking things as trophies from his victims. And he was the only professor who didn't fall for his 'nice quiet boy' act while he was at Hogwarts. so he knows if there's one wizard who can find out what he is up to, it is Dumbledore.
