Can we turn an Open 66 race boat into a fast family cruiser?! | Ep. 1

- Caio! We are Timo and Jo, an Italian and English couple with countless ocean miles under our belts, including sailing half way around the world from Europe to Fiji!
Last year we bought an Open 66 ft race sailing boat originally designed and built by the famous Hungarian sailor Nándor Fa. He raced her in the 1992 Vendée Globe (round the world single handed race known as “the Everest of the seas”), coming 5th and becoming the first non-frenchman to finish the race.
We are currently in Fiji transforming NV from an ex race boat to a performance family cruiser! We're planning to set sail again in October 2022 , giving us just over a year to turn our dreams into reality and get back on the water! With limited time and money we have plenty of challenges ahead.
This is the first episode in our refit series. In this video we introduce ourselves and give a bit of background info about the boat, our project and future plans.
Subscribe to our channel and track our progress as we release videos showing our transformation of this old gladiator into a performance family cruiser, which we'll need to make both dog and baby proof!
Never stop to dream, never stop to sail!

Cool boat, great channel! Thanks for sharing your project!
Thanks for the nice words Janneke! :)
All that fiddle music made me think I was watching Deliverance.
Hahaha
Love it guys. Good luck with the conversion!!!
Thanks Horst! Nice to hear from you :)
Go Timo Go!
Ciao lupo un grazie e spero di vederti presto
Awesome boat
Thanks, looking forward to having you onboard :)
Very cool project! Can’t wait to see it in person!
Thanks dude, looking forward to you getting back here!
Good luck Timo and Jo!
Thanks Nick!! Maybe we can make a stop in Aus next year!
Bravissimi!!!
Grazie!

Great project - what is the plan - can you give a breakdown of the changes you're making and why. I'm assuming its more than fitting a sofa and plugging up some holes ;-) Are you going to stick with that amazing draft. With the children and dog are you going to be able to effectively single hand this beast? I feel there are more videos in this one.
Thanks! Yes we have lots of plans! For sure we will make another video to give more details and also videos showing the work being done... I’m currently working on one about removing our rudder!
Bu ta ful, I can see it now. Thanks for sharing and take care. Been waiting for something like this, looking forward to seeing the next episodes…
Thanks Clifton!!!
Grundig was the sponsored name for the open 60 called Zena. It was owned and modified to an open 66 by Sean Langman who owns Noakes Boatyard in Sydney. He did massive mods including twin rudders and dagger boards and competed in several Hobart races with her trying to get line honours. Was never able to do that as water lye Length just wasn’t long enough against the 80 and 100 footers so he sold her and bought a trimaran. I think this one is the old broomstick?
Yep exactly, was owned by Michael Cranitch and I think the extension was inspired by Grundig and done in the same yard
Did the same , Whitbread 71
nice! are you finished with your refit? would love to see what you did
Have you considered digging a hole for the keel so you easily work or protect it from a cyclone ? André in Sydney
Hey André great to hear from you. Yep we have dug a mini cyclone pit for our keel, but unfortunately we couldn't dig one deep enough to allow our hull to be sat at ground level, because our 4.2m draft means the pit would be below sea level and would collapse
@@SailingNV Thanks I did not consider that. Of course every marina will be near sea level. Looking forward to seeing you over here in Australia or when I get away in my cat. André
We are currently refitting an IOR yacht so I will be interested to watch your progress 3 years so far for us
Ah Awesome where are you doing your refit?
@@SailingNV we are in Albany Western Australia. We have used ayrelite panels which are honey comb aluminium between two sheets of aluminium and laminate for weight saving which might be of interest to you if you are trying to keep the weight down.
@@davidcahill3104 nice idea thanks, what are you using it for?
@@SailingNV we are using it for bulkheads and just about anywhere you would use plywood. It is expensive but does speed up the build as it comes in various colours and timber look finishes
That boat raced the Sidney Hobart branded as Grundig?
No she was called broomstick and then the stick but I think some of her modifications were based on the design of Grundig
@@SailingNV ok. Because if no mistaken, Grundig was also a 60 with a 6’ extension
@@svestancia yeah would make sense as I think NV was modelled after Grundig and even done in the same yard with some of the same builders/designers
Timo, if u would adding the vowel A or O, we could understand u better
🤣
I'd love to see a video where he does his best American accent for the whole video!
I really hope this works out for you.
Thanks so do we!!! 🤞
That boat seems like a really bad idea for a cruising boat. First off look how much interior room it has, it's 66 foot with a cabin and sleeping area of a 30 footer. 66 feet of maintaining is costly and time consuming.mooring and haul out fees would be astronomical. Imagine what the sails would cost and handling those huge sails with 2 people would be a handful, especially if you got caught out in a big blow. Then you get that hull shape it's like a 18 foot skiff on steroids, such an uncomfortable boat to sail as a cruising boat. about the only positive i can see would be it's speed, you could run from approaching storms to some extent. For me the negatives far outweigh the positives
We understand your opinion. You are right that the interior is small for it’s size, but the cockpit is enormous!!! We really enjoy this as we like to spend most of our time outside… especially with a dog and a toddler, it’s really like having a back yard! The interior is also significantly larger than 30 foot (as we’ve both owned boats larger than this yet we still have more room inside on NV), don’t forget we’ve got the workshop in the bow plus the two aft cabins at the back. Also the width is of course considerably larger than a 30 footer which makes the living areas more roomy… so far she’s been super comfortable to cruise in, very stable both at sea and at anchor, a lot more so than our previous boats that rolled more
If anyone can manage a mammoth task like this one it's you guys!
I am coming back soon to check progress.
