Started my career with nwjatc apprenticeship in 1989. Still running line crews and now my old apprentice buddy is an instructor there. Lots of years in the trade all over the world. My boy will be going through the apprenticeship in the northwest as well. He will be another good local 77 hand some day!
God man I’m older but trying out for Alabama power. Wish I had known this 8-10 years ago. Respect.
I’ve been an emt and paramedic since 2011. I was a city firefighter for 6 years, firefighters get paid crap and the only way to make over 100k is working hundreds of hours ot. Im seriously considering this career change.
Been doing it 8 years now in south Texas. Pay scale is not as nearly as close but we still make quite a bit. Serviceman get a ton of overtime
How much you get an a week cuzzo
I’m also in south Texas and I’m looking on being a linemen myself

How many hours a week do you work on average.
I work lineman in Russia 5 years. We repair line 220-500.000 volt. My salary is 500 dollars right now. and it would be better if I didn’t know how much my colleagues in the States get because it makes me sick
We love our Russian friends come over here and make a ton of money
@@skylarcamp4773 we don’t have Russian friends😂😂
500$ a week? that is almost minwage here
come on over man
Don't worry our country is rapidly deteriorating.
I made that much my 2nd year as a truck driver when I was 21.
I just stared this in march I don't make that much basically 5 a week I guess its time to drop these guys
ive herd a lot guys would under pays guys but after seeing this
to answer your question I made money from cutting hair
My son is hoping to get into the local IBEW lineman apprenticeship!
Money isn't everything. However, MONEY IS IMPORTANT. money is very important. People who downplay how important money is are burying their head in the sand.
Got in apprenticeship in ‘08. Im with the contractors in Long Island New York. Ibew paid me to train. Making 69$ an hour . As of April 28th I’m at 85k for the year. Last year I grossed 239k year before that we had a big hurricane. Grossed 283k. That doesn’t count vacation checks, money put in my annuity by my employer plus my fully paid benefits. Yeah fuck college fuck line school. Damn proud of my trade. I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Core Drilling pays well and free travel. 10 days 10 night then 10 off 12 hours days starting around 20$ per hour.
Did u go to school for it ?? And if yes or no how did u get ur foot into that career path ?
20 is nothing now.
I was thinking about doing mercenary work after my 4yrs in the Marines is over for the money, but fuck that. This seems better in every way possible.
I’ve never been good with my hands but want to goto lineman school. Worked in restaurants for 9 years from a dishwasher to general manager. Want to learn a new skill and grow.

I’m buying a house. Would I have to relocate closer to the city if I get a job there? I would be an apprentice
I work in Cali. Utility worker is 34 an hour I was a first step apprentice making 47 an hour. I've had weeks in storm or fire making 9700 a week before taxes. As a lineman you can make 18K a week before taxes. Pretty damn good gig if you ask me... Incredible benefits and a union. What more could you ask for
How are you making 47 dollars and hour as a first step?
@@eveg4737 that's what the rate is. I don't control it, its what the union and company agree on. Lineman in the bay area are making 82 an hour, with a 2-4k housing stipend a month depending on where you live and all overtime is double time. If you give me your email I'll screen shot my hourly for you lol.
@@tkoz7856 Hmm I see so you work for PG&E but, those scales are only for Bay Area lineman? I know A lot of PGE guys who are making less than that. I haven't heard of 82 dollars across the board.
@@eveg4737 the bay area isn't the only spot, there's several. Right now lineman here get 70 an hour pretty much universally if you're not in high demand/high cost of living areas. Some spots get the all overtime is double time even if they're not bay area. And some high cost areas are getting over 50k in signing bonus for a 1 year sign on. Regardless I'm not in the bay area and I'm making 47 as a first step, which is pretty good considering some lineman in other states don't even make that.
Hey man, would love to have a conversation with you about the details of pursuing this line of work. Willing to pay for your time if necessary. I'm also located in nor cal.
Whats was yout hourly rate
Is there an age limit. Im working in the school system but im looking for something better. Im 46 now
I'm currently a welder helper in west Texas been on Main line for about a year, looking at maybe switching trades while I'm not broken out yet. Any input on staying in this trade or switching and the difference in salaries
He’s lying you need college I remember I thought it was a no brainer then I looked into it college is a requirement just to get an apprenticeship
I made 140k my first year as an apprentice in New Hampshire lol. 93k is actually pretty low even as an apprentice. Thats 4-10s with a $100 per diem for a year no storm or ot in the north east
I’m an journeyman electrician currently and I’m seriously considering becoming a lineman.
Do it. Family runs an electrical company and pays master electricians 38 an hour. For lineman wages start around 30. That’s not everywhere but less schooling as well!!
What’s your pay man will you be making way more from journey men scale?
Broo I’m thinking the same thing ha! I just got my journeyman license as an electrician 4 years of schooling..only thing that sucks is starting the schooling over again since I just finished..but the MONEY
@@cxntsnipe4769 my current hourly rate is 26.50 but I’ve only had my journeyman’s for about 8 months
im a 8th Year carpenter making 30$ an hour with zero benefits in the midwest. I just applied today to DCTC to linemen school to work as a linemen lets go boys!!!
Truck driving. To answer your question sir. But I get what your saying. You can easily make 100k your first year
Being an owner operator truck driver-after taxes(19,00) a month
As a truck driver I make about 12k a month (after taxes)working for Tesla day shift. Owner operator really went down hill for being over the road.
@@justinrivas79 how do you apply hat Tesla amd where ?
@@theentrepreneur607 you need to find who contracts your closed Tesla warehouse facilities so like T force which is ups they max out at 60$ an hour running routes. I do the Southern California Tesla dealer and repair shops division but the solar is also a money maker.
@@justinrivas79 so Tforce freight does Tesla? But the application is not directly through Tesla right?
@@theentrepreneur607 yes but Tesla hires only contractors so it can be someone else at your closed Tesla location like Ryder, Penske or someone else just have to look around.
Do you have to travel to be a lineman? Anyway to just be able to work locally all the time? I know next to nothing about this job yet, only just recently looked into it
I heard people travel a lot for good $
Transitioning into the civilian life in 6 months after my 5 years in the Marines Infantry and moving to Texas! Very excited an interested in this. Single Dad and want to give my kiddo the best life. What should be the first step into getting into this?
I just got into the industry but I went to line school with a bunch of marines/army guys. In Texas where I work it’s very hard to get a job with a company without school and a cdl. But it’s not impossible. The lineschool plus cdl for me was $17,000 and 16 weeks but helped me get a job and respected lineman for references. The best advice I can give you is get your foot in the door. Trying to get hired on to a company’s the hardest part but once your in as long as you have a good work ethic(which judging off of every marine I’ve worked with you have a damn good one) you’ll have a damn good life
@Justin o Lou 8⁷_yI y ù its 56t er6u
@ Justin , did u just get the lineman certificate???
Get your CDL and go to line school using your GI bill not paying a dime, you’ll most likely be able to get hired somewhere if you’re willing to travel as soon as you graduate

I'm 36 amd ready to get out of farming and join the IBEW and possibly lineman. Any advice is welcomed?
What skills, knowledge, experiences would help strengthen a resume being sent for a lineman entry level position.
climbing arborist
Anyway a felon could be a lineman?
Is this union or non union?
I'm a 7th year Carpenter. 27 Years old finally realized I'm going back to school today. I finally applied to DCTC in the midwest to do Linemen school. Sick of busting my tail knowing my trade, knowing my tools, have all this knowledge but making dick with zero benefits. LETS GO!
SAME EXACT STORY! Only I'm 26 and do concrete.
Bruh I'm also 26, industrial Mechanic. Still debating on a career change
Funny thing I dipped from concrete and carpentry to go be a power linemen I have an interview for an apprenticeship Monday hopefully I get it
@@ajanifountaine251 Damn i posted that 1 year ago. :D I'm on my 2nd week of school right now we just tested our speed on a 35 ft pole today. I tied for first at 25 seconds up and down. Showing these young bucks a 28 year old can HANG. ;) Best of luck brotha
@@mikescheer2125hey I am 29 thinking I might apply for an open position at a utility locally. Im currently working as a pre apprentice as a stationary engineer and make 95 but with a zombie shift. Did the linemen career change work out for you? Was your age a significant factor? I just dont know if I can keep doing this desk work lol
The real question is, is most of the overtime mandatory or voluntary? I mean do you want to work more than 50 hours every week for the rest of your life????

Oilfield bro. That’s where I was when I was 21. Haha. Now I’m just starting my apprentice in the NW as a frickin 29 year old. Hahah came from North Dakota/ non union

Right there with you starting older but hell let’s get it.

Bug tf out of company’s. Show them you really want to work. But honestly very hard to get in without going to lineschool

You definitely need some schooling before, not necessarily a degree but you can't just walk into the job

I made $110,000 my second year as a landman. It doesn't require as much work or danger as being a lineman, and you get more sleep.
Did u go to school for it ?? And if yes or no how did u get ur foot into that career path ?
@@marchernandez1828 I did not go to school for it. I knew a guy who knew a guy who was starting a land services business, and he asked if I'd be interested. I didn't know anything about its but he took me to the courthouse one day to show me what he did, and I said I'd try it. It really wasn't that hard to learn how to do. I got about two days of training, then mostly figured it out on my own. I've worked with a lot of people and have just asked questions when I had them.
@@philochristos any openings with your company? I’m trying to get my foot in the door somewhere willing to grind.
@@philochristosdo you know the requirements for landman?
@@olympic-ass-eater You can become a landman with nothing but a high school diploma, but it is very hard to get your foot in the door. You pretty much have to know somebody. There are certifications you can get, but getting them requires you to already have a job as a landman.
You said you didn't go to College or anything? So you didnt go to NLC just went and signed the books huh?
NLC is a waste of 20k and months of your life. When I got into the apprenticeship I had 0 climbing experience. I also didn't have a CDL. I climb better than half of the people in my class who went to NCL. They teach bad mechanics and give you bad habits. They make it about time. Not technique. Everyone in my class said it was a waste of 20k and took them just as long as I did to get into the apprenticeship.
Ibew pays to train. Fuck line school.

Easier when you're young and dumb. After so many years of doing lineman, you might be regretting it. You'll have a lifetime of joint issues - no money can take away that pain.
