@Yass BA it seems they have always been there before they become a country. As debutant and eventual semifinalist in 98, six of their players in that squad had already played in the world cup.
@BIazy Croatia (and some of the rest of ex Yugoslav republics like Bosnia and Serbia) already existed for centuries. Croatia also avoided a lot of the devastation from the war. Compared to African countries who are more focused on surviving, Croatia is doing good
@BIazy yeah but Croatia had time to stabilize. They have the talent and stability. Compared to say Bosnia, Slovenia and Albania who have the talent but no stability
I think this is just the golden generation of Croatia. They’re not a big country so they don’t have too many young talents and I think they’ll decline soon
Crazy to me is that they competed the first time in 98 after the fall of Yugoslavia and have placed in the top 3 3 out of the 6 times they competed since then with a population of just around 4 million
Literally all of them except Morocco faced England. Costa Rica in the Group Stage, Wales in the Group Stage, Iceland in the Round of 16 and Croatia in Semi-Final.

Turkey's Euro 2008 run can be mentioned. Not only qualifying to the semi final, but also winning three matches in extra time (two of them were comebacks) and almost doing it against Germany were amazing.
Croatia really have an underdog history in all competitions, from their 1998 generation with Šuker and co to their 2022 generation with Modrić and others.
Croatia was an underdog in the 2022 wc also. No one expected them to go till the semi finals. In fact they were expected to lose in the round of 16 seeing Japan's form in their group. But they defeated Japan on penalties. Then they defeated Brazil also in the qfs. And then they defeated morocco and came 3rd in the whole tournament. Modric at 37 was fire.
1.Greece won the Euro 2004 after having only 150-1 chances to win. 2.Iraq won the Asian Cup 2007 despite the country was destroyed by civil war. 3.Denmark won the Euro 1992 after failed to qualify (replaced Yugoslav as a result of civil war). 4.Zambia won the AFCON 2012 in the city where a tragic plane crash occurred 19 years ago (Libreville). 5.Chile won back to back Copa America in 2015 and 2016, which was the end of Lionel Messi's dream with Argentina (he resurrected it by winning Copa America and World Cup).

I'd like to add Qatar in this list. But in 2019, surprisingly, they've won the cup for the very first time. But yeah, back to the factory reset in the World Cup Also Iraq. But in 2007, they've won and at the time, Iraq was still at war
I would put Costa Rica in 3rd place. They were drawed into a group with all World Cup winners besides themselves. Topped that. Then dominated against Greece until the equalizer and then almost beat the previous runner up the netherlands on pens
Considering they lost the opening game and their best player the Denmark Euro 2020 run would've been among the top if they had won the close semifinal against Englad
