    The box size does affect the power handling. But this homie has it backwards, the smaller the enclosure the more power a sub can handle. The bigger the box the deeper the sub will play.

      That is right .... the big the cabinet the deeper the bass going too be... get some folded horn cabinets... Yes they are some very large cabinet.... but if you want your bass too hit deep... Get you a better power amplifier... Qsc , Crest audio, Crown....etc

    I recently purchased peavey lomax 18 and can tell you that I am very impressed with the bass output especially the deep bass. This subwoofer needs longer ports for deeper bass tuning than most other Pa speakers. This hits low like a car competition subwoofer. Does not need big box. Tried in 6 cup ft box then 4.5 cu ft box and noticed more spl from the 4( more hard hitting bass) and more.low end rumble from the 6 cup ft.

    There are a few factors here. enclosures being one of them . The one size fits all does no service here! you need the proper enclosures to utilize the Peavys proper performance. The peavey is more powerful in performance than the other to woofers. As you go up in power handling the sensitivity of the coil tends to go down a little giver or take. As the adhesive on the coils are stronger higher temp and thicker in coating. This helps to resist thermal melt down at higher watt levels. this means you Need to push it more than the other 2 for equal out put. The other two subs are at the same power rating which makes it a little more fair in that performance perspective. The second factor is the Peavey low maxx has a lower FS. and in the right enclosure can do play well in to the 20s! with a lower FS This tends to shift the peaky response of the driver down to a lower ranges. Higher FS drivers are more peaky and aggressive in tonality. This is a live sound standard. With The lower FS drivers, the trade off here is low end extension in bandwidth. The Vega is higher FS as well as the b52. You should have used one source location to try all the woofers in one location! As this will help the wave patterns to be more precise in the same listing location. Point sourcing the cabinets in one place preferably in a wide open place with little to know buildings This will give you a better listening of the drivers with less destructive interference's for a better listing judgment.

  • @djteknovibe93
    @djteknovibe93 Před 6 lety +12

    You said at 0:22 the Peavey driver is rated at 2,400 watts with the right enclosure but you're wrong the driver will take 1,200 watts AES continuous for 2 hours, also the right enclosure doesn't make a different to speaker wattage. The wattage is a power rating for what a speaker driver can handle, not what it can output, what it can output is rated in decibels. Plus those ports on your sub look too small for the 8.25mm Xmax the driver has. For high Xmax drivers you need very large ports and then you tune the enclosure to a resonant frequency by adjusting the port depth inside the enclosure. Plus one reason the Cerwin Vega might sound better is because the enclosure was designed for it, you HAVE to use speaker enclosure design software and input the driver's thiele small parameters into the software when you wanna upgrade your subs drivers. Believe it or not, not every equivilent sized driver sounds just as good in that enclosure. The enclosure internal volume, port size and port depth all are VERY important things to take into account.

    • @OfficialNakatsuMegami
      @OfficialNakatsuMegami Před 6 lety

      AES rating is not RMS. AES is Pink Noise Rating, it is very different than RMS value. Why Hartley gives AES values to the public is beyond me, it's only valuable to engineers for burn ins. The The Volume and porting can effect power handling, but doubt the enclosure he was using was very far off.

    • @OfficialNakatsuMegami
      @OfficialNakatsuMegami Před 6 lety

      Why not? I run 4,000 watt Single Coil Pro Woofers by Eminence right now... Hartley used to under rate his speakers all the time for warranty reasons.. His SP5's had Scorpions 15" that listed 800watt watt ratings when the raw woofer only showed 200w /400w max. I know for a fact the 3020HT's would easily handle 1400 watts each all day long even though the cabs said 200 watts AES, 400 watts Music Program Max. I ran them for over 10 years during the 80's and 90's, and were the absolute best sounding Concert Speakers Made compared to component crap made today. Only flaw were the Crossovers, which was easily fixable with higher grade parts.

    • @VictorEstrada
      @VictorEstrada Před 6 lety

      That would be pink noise. It means running the same frequency nonstop, so no cooling. 2400 would be what you set your system to, and it has 4800w peak, for those rare ocations songs have an extra kick. That's why all speakers have 3 wattage ratings, in this case 1200/2400/4800, with that being Continuos (pink noise), RMS, and Peak.

    • @OfficialNakatsuMegami
      @OfficialNakatsuMegami Před 6 lety

      4800 watts peak Program, We actually ran them at 6kW for over 2 hours continuous at stadiums arenas with music. And Ratings are for Music, AES wattage is only used by Engineers. It doesn't matter how much "kick" a song has in it, its music, its Program Ratings, not Electrical Peak Ratings, like you are thinking they are. There are a lot of Factors involved in what the true electrical rating is on a transducer. I trusted my suppliers when they told me they were rated 4.8kW all day long and placed that rating for warranty reasons and that 6kW would be a reasonable input for a 2 hour operation.

    Low Pass filter built into the speaker?
    Could try testing some 10, 20, 30hz signal off you tube. Find out what going on there.. Allso test around bass high end 150, 160, 200hz signal.
    I'd go with the vega for me. But im looking at a dual sub like the dual 18 Wharfdale delta 30hz low end on those but crossover is 120hz..
    Ideal sub would crossover around 180hz and have low end of 25/30hz
    I say ideal because 140hz-170hz are the bass frequency's that hit your chest so you want your sub to hit them frequency!

  • @VictorEstrada
    @VictorEstrada Před 6 lety +4

    Your amp isn't powerful enough, it's only giving out 1600 watts top, instead of the 2400/4800w peak the speaker can take. Not a fair test as the Peavey didn't get it's peak power

  • @DjTonyRosa
    @DjTonyRosa Před 5 lety +2

    You can put a 6k watt or $2,000 driver in those cabinets and it won’t sound any different from what you have in front of you right now , those boxes were not built on the specifications of those drivers which is why you can’t tell a difference with them , and I promise you that peavey is disappointing you because you put it in a box that it wasn’t intended to be in . You build a box and have it tuned specifically for that driver and I guarantee it will be louder than all 3 together in those boxes you have now . It’s all about power and enclosures .
