What I learned from crashing on big jumps at Whistler Bike Park

- In another video, we talked about how mountain biking can relieve stress. This is only true when you're using mountain biking as an escape-not when it's the actual CAUSE of the stress.
This week’s video takes place at Whistler Bike Park, and is a story about how your mental state can get you hurt on a mountain bike. In my case, feeling relaxed and happy makes me ride great. Feeling pressured and preoccupied to ride certain things almost always leads to injury. This is why so many people crash on their “last lap”. The park patrol medic even called it “the Witching hour”.
In this video, delays on getting footage led to preoccupation, and then to poor riding. Sound familiar?
There’s also a lesson about practice. I haven’t ridden big jumps since last summer, yet I jumped into a bigger trail than I had ever ridden after just a few days at Whistler. As someone with a history of riding poorly under pressure, this was not a smart idea.
Skill is only for rent. If you don’t make payments, you lose it.

Holy shit facts
Literally what happened to me this past weekend. Just got back into it and picked up a Process 153 after not riding for 4 years. Went down a jump trail and ate it over the handlebars on a kicker... tore my bicep and separated my shoulder!
Always take the time to relearn before you assume you remember how!
And this is so important to remember.

we used to have a deal when we were riding, that no one was allowed to say stuff like "I'm almost done" or "last run". As soon as you break your own confidence or decide youre done, youre done. No extra filming, no extra runs. Thats it.

Dude I totally feel you the line “I felt like a passenger on my own bike.” Stuck with me. I know this is a bike channel and I am a mountain biker but last February I was skiing and crashed at 36 mph of a jump being careless and racing a friend. I couldn’t ride my skis the same for the rest of the season out of fear and the loss of skill after my month recovery, anyway this was just my long dumb story about how that line meant something to me
Mister Beaver it was one bad crash due to stupidity and lack of education that ruined by progression. My quick release kit on my front wheel let go when I hit a jump, landed and my front tire had left the groove, ate dirt really hard and had a massive bruise on my chest from where my handle bars smashed into me. I ended up winding myself on my handle bars when my front wheel slipped out and getting launched, bike landed on and I just layed there sounding like a wheezing sea lion, good times
@@staticalphabetsoup637 I'm def using "wheezing sea lion" in the future thank you XD

Same thing with skiing. If you hesitate you’ll get anxious and just feel bad. Then when you crash you feel exhausted not courageous and it messes you up even more

Dude, the skill for rent quote was so good. I audibly went "YES!" when I heard it. I draw and a lot of people always complain about lack of talent to me, and what not. I always am at a lack for words when explaining how practicing and consistency makes a good artist (Not some magical innate talent) without sounding bitchy and dry. I really love that quote, explains what I have been trying to say for a long while.
some people learn faster than others, that's about it
Seth this is probably the most important video you have ever made. "Skill is only for rent" and injury is what happens when you overdraw.
+Seth's Bike Hacks It's ok if the video is not that good or delayed as long as you dont get hurt.
Rule number one of mountain biking
NEVER SAY ONE LAST LAP!
It’s a bastard I always get smashed up on the last lap
Been to the hospital twice bc I thought one last lap will be good...you're damn right!
yeah! always call it "2nd to last"... or just end it after a good run
I’ve learned to just finish on a sweet lap
Specially on sunset.
This is a great video. After seeing two people stretchered out the last two weekends and countless arm slings, this is super valuable for people to hear. Sometimes you just gotta let go of that ego and hang up the towel for the day so you can ride the next. Keep'em coming!
Alex is progressing at a ridiculous rate. Stay safe! I'm glad he's wearing a neck brace.
I'll say I've watched Alex on these videos for the last three years and seen him go from a real chicken shot Novice to a skilled and competent rider, I feel like I've followed that same trajectory but I don't have the advantage of bike shuttle s and world class mtb park , these are great progression based clips , I think he is honesty and candid with his thoughts very helpful
I’m a skateboarder and I’ve never tried MTB in my life, but I’m addicted to your videos and really want to rent a bike and try it out. Your videos are just so good and well made and interesting. I wish we had a channel like yours in skateboarding!
Sorry for the late reply but i used to be into skateboarding too, but i got my first DH bike and never looked back. I got my first real mountain bike in August 2019 and im progressing so fast. Its my wish to be a Downhill racer and i think im on track to be one.

Nobody talking about the hardtail guys? That is such a hard trail to be doing on a hardtail, mad respect!!
just dumb, the way his ankle broke was such a small impact. watch the footage again. he likely weakened it by hitting those huge jumps throughout the day until it failed with like 1ft of air. he's lucky it failed there.. one of those bigger jumps could have been more broken bones.

Thanks Seth for the inspiration from this vid! Getting back on after a traumatic crash is probably the scariest feeling in the world honestly. I recently had one and have been slower on my bike ever since. This vid really inspired me to push the limits of what I once thought I was capable! Cheers mate!
Funny how I was just watching all your jump videos!
This is fantastic advice. I once was an avid rider and got back I to MTB last year. Thanks to your videos, I decided to admit ignorance and forget everything I thought I knew about manuals, hops, and jumps and start all over. I've only put 2 days of practice in at the local cycling park jump tracks. I'm still on the intermediate track but jumping and landing better than before even on these speed bumps. I'm dedicating one week to each track before moving up to the next. I very much appreciate your hop and jump videos. This one is a good capstone.
i love how your an amazing rider but a beginner at heart and know when to stop and give other people advice and idk but this video explains it
Great commentary. I learned that lesson about not trying to pick up with the difficulty level you left the year before the hard way. Broken collaebone one time, broken ankle another time.
Nice video Seth! Enjoy your time at Whistler! It sure is one of the best places to be! 👍🏻if you agree!

Amazing video! As I start to progress in my bike park experience, I love watching your videos and knowing that I am not alone with some of my failures leading to crashes. Even as an old guy, I am still learning when it is time to call it quits and when it is time to get back on the horse.

Wow. This video is incredible. I don't often audibly react, hold my breath, or cover my mouth in awe or fear when watching CZcams. But I gotta say, I was guilty of all of there and more. Absolutely incredibly paced, stellar use of music and the fluctuation in your voice. Even the damn pauses were all perfectly placed to build tension. I nerd out a little bit when it comes to filming stuff, and watching someone who rides bikes for a living, it doesn't always occur to me that you do so much more behind the scenes. I really appreciate your storytelling and the anxiety and happiness I felt while watching this, I even got really stoked about stuff I wasn't even taking part in, you don't find that all wrapped up in a video too much anymore. One more thing I don't often do is leave comments. At all. But this video was the perfect exception to write to my hearts content and I'm glad I did. I hope this finds you and at least makes you smile to know you're making other people smile.
Cheers Seth, please keep up the great content. I'll take quality over quantity any day 🤙

"Skill is for rent" -- this line struck me hard. It's so very true. Thanks for this video. I had this level of difficulty with the lower half of A-Line when I was out at Whistler. It's a comfort to see a rider of your skill working through dead sailor jumps and nosedives too.
