@@esteban280889 If it was going to it would have been this or last week. I don't think it's happening and I think that's a good thing. Rowling doesn't need more publicity.

Yahtzee: "This game was so good it made me mad that the video game industry sucks. 10/10"
To be fair, he's completely right.
This is literally the top highest form of praise from this guy. I'd be blushing like a schoolgirl if I was told this.
Even more right when you realize the game itself is a pretty on the nose satire on the current state of companies. They only care about profits and want to mind control people into buying useless products, QA and production that cares more about reputation and snuffing out naysayers than responding to criticism, R&D that needlessly wastes money, marketing that's just narcissistic and doesn't know what actual marketing is, and so. Even the robotic workers are calling out bad management and inhumane workplace practices.
@@vullord666 ngl, when you replace complaining workers with robots and ROBOTS start complaining, I guess that tells something about your managing skills XD
@@vullord666 It's hilarious how they managed to deliver one of the most damning critiques of modern corporations I've yet to see in video games. It's all petty power trips and self-aggrandizement even as the company barely holds itself together by inertia of the past. One of the funniest subplots is finding the notes that tell you why the coffee is now permanently decaf, because someone decided to pull "I'll make you quit rather than actually fire you" routine. Hell, the intended use case of the big bad's evil plan: they create the ultimate violation of human rights, not for some grand evil scheme, but because the product team can't be assed to keep defining good products.
@@Advon I think the funniest part is that this is done by BETHESDA, who's been running on pretty much skyrim and fallout alone for the past 10 fucking years

I guess you forgot about how much he loves Return of the Obra Dinn
Or Elden Ring.
Don't forget Disco Elysium.
Or Cuphead.
The fact that Yahtzee could joke about "The End" as a new feature for a game says quite a bit about the state of the industry and the years leading up to it.
I kid you not I have tried to explain to friends how I dislike the postgame of certain games overtaking the initial product and they just can't get why I don't like it.
These friends just don't grasp that I prefer careful design, balance, and truly optional content over an ever escalating new content grind that eventually lumbers on for so long that it overtakes and replaces the main progression systems of a game.
I don't think I've heard such a strong A+ from Yahtzee
Return of the Obra Dinn, surely. To the point that he keeps bringing it up as a reference in other reviews as to what various things *should* be like.

@@plumcave9942 don't forget the original minecraft review!
Low key one of the best things about Hi-Fi is that even though it is a rhythm action game it doesn't necessarily punish you for having a poor sense of rhythm until relatively late in the game.
Your actual attacks ALWAYS land on the beat, even if your button timing was off. That said, it does do more damage the better your timing is.
The other best thing is drum machine cat.
Yeah basically the only time not going on beat will really fuck you over hard is the post game with either the challenge rooms that have extra conditions like ending the fight with enough of a Just Timing percentage or the unlockable difficulty where you die if your combo meter's rating dips low enough.
Are you sure about that? I think the moments where minibosses lock you into a parry/dodge combo and force you to repeat their attacks perfectly or else kind of demand you to have perfect sense of rhythm.
Key example of what happens when you let developer make a game they give a shit about without trying to ring as many pennies out of the audience.

@@repodan12 It happens - not quite the same thing but I had a tendency to read certain authors (OK, really just Terry Pratchett) when I was too young to have come across all the words he used and, English being what it is, I ended up pronouncing them wrong for years because I'd invented my own pronunciation by accident and couldn't get it out of my head. The worst, weirdly enough, is a Yahtzee favourite: 'hitherto.' I stressed it the wrong way round and only pronounced the middle syllable (the one that's impossible to get wrong) right for _ages._

huge Jet Set Vibes
@@GraveRobbinJakeHonestly, it reminded me of classic God of War with its quicktime events and grand boss battles.
I also felt that each PS2-esque game element Hi-Fi Rush takes inspiration from is perfected here; for example, I loved how they did the “apathetic selfish jerk turns into hero” trope compared to Ratchet and Clank 2002, it didn’t feel too abrasive for me, and I loved that Chai’s change has more room to breathe and be explored.
Shinji Mikami's involvment in hi-fi rush isn't much of a surprise, since he's literally the founder of tango gameworks.
So it's like when Amblin put Steven Spielberg's name of stuff just because he is the guy on top.
That's actually incorrect.
Most of the creative drive (story, characters, tone) comes from its director John Johanas.
Mikami-san was largely off-hands, with occasional supervision.
@@MatanVil this. "Involvement" of well known figures in the credits of major media releases is a hugely efficient way to market things, without anything meaningful needing to be done in practice. His "involvement" is a marketing win regardless of if he ever put pen to paper, and since he is involved with the company they may as well slap his name on it.

Honestly I really hope this is the start of big studios bringing out more mid tear budget games again. Not every title needs to be 100 hours long and cost full price. AA back in the 6th and 7th gen are why those are some of my fav generations in all of gaming. A mid budget game has more freedom than a AAA game due to the smaller risk and more budget than an indie to put more detail into stuff like the animations and visuals giving you a nice mid point between the two.
You’d think they’d figure that out by now after dumping embarrassing amounts of money into shit games no one cares about. Maybe they wouldn’t “need” to raise the price of video games if they focused on making them engaging rather than making them look good. If they made smaller games more often they could definitely make more money than blowing it all on a big game that fails miserably. Though like Yahtzee said at the end, it’s more than likely that they already know this. Even beyond Hi-Fi Rush itself, There have been so many remasters coming out recently it seems most game publishers realize how much better their games used to be
You’d think, but a slavering pack of subhuman investors would skin the CEO alive if they even implied that the company wasn’t trying to make every penny in the entire universe with every single game release.
that's my secret, Cap. I'm always mid tear
I doubt HiFi Rush was a mid tier budget game, animation is incredibly expensive, doubly so for (digital) hand drawn animation that this game regularly uses.
@@leonardchurch814 I'd argue that Hi-Fi Rush's budget is "small" and sold for cheap solely because the game didn't have to dedicate any of it's budget to marketing which is normally 1/3 to 1/2 of a AAA game's budget.
I haven't been able to put this game down since I got it. Rhythm Master difficulty us grinding my face to the dirt, but I still have a big stupid grin on my face.
Are you sure your lips didn't just sand off
@Érick I'm a week later and only past three more levels, my lips are non-existant now. Still having fun, though.
You know you have a great game when you can absolutely suck and still enjoy yourself.
My major problem with Rhythm Master is when there's forced downtime during a bossfight... meaning your Style meter will go down... Meaning you can die because the Boss is in an immune state and refuses to do anything...
Doesn't feel that hard, though, compared to Hard. I've definitely died more to forced downtime than I have straight up dying.
If you are still enjoying getting pulverised that's a sign of a good game in my eyes

It really seems that Hi-Fi rush is a really early game of the year contender, and hopefully as things go people do remember it during the year. Honestly the messaging can't be clearer, games with a good primary gameplay loop, a fun story, and a definite ending ARE a niche that is not being covered and if executives would DIVERSIFY their projects perhaps they might actually make more money instead of launching a mediocre piece of crap that doesn't make anyone happy
As far as I'm concerned it's a tie between hifi rush and pizza tower
@@tximistarissole That's certainly fair. The praises of Hi-Fi Rush apply to Pizza Tower too.
Pizza Tower being an Indie game probably shifts the way people feel about it though. I feel like the general public just expects Indie games to be like that, so it's not as big of a deal as Hi-Fi Rush, to them.
... or you know, if players could get their heads out of the arses of AAA gaming then they'd realise there are already plenty of games made by indies and Nintendo that fit your criteria.
There's nothing more nauseating than Hi Fi Rush players acting like this is a fresh new game concept because they (finally) willingly exposed themselves to it because it had a budget high enough and was on the "right platform" or made by a developer palatable to them.
@@paulrussell9632 I think the shocking factor is that hi fi rush came from a major publisher like bethesda.
HiFi is my GOTY and I don’t see anything unseating it for the rest of the year, even Starfield.
After buying both BPM and Metal: Hellsinger because of Yahtzee's recommendations I think I know what I'm gonna be playing when I get home from work.
A few years ago, a game that could be considered a precursor to Hi-Fi Rush by name of No Straight Roads came out. Not perfect by any means, some'd say it's not that interesting as an actual *game*, but it's not a bad debut title for a new dev studio.
And there is just as much love, style and awesomeness radiating off of it as with Hi-Fi Rush. Mainly in terms of the world, characters, and the *music*. All bosses have a default, EDM and Rock version of their theme that changes depending on how well or badly you do, and with the Christmas DLC and the Encore Edition, that's two more versions for every boss.
That, and there's like... 573 credited pieces of fan-art you can find around the game as part of a special event lead-up to the Encore Edition being released.
@@jurtheorc8117 No Straight Roads? I'll have to check it out.

I was really hoping Yahtzee would talk about delay combos since its something he couldn't wrap his head around in spectacle fighters but in this game it makes it easily understandable for beginners.
Honestly if you liked this game and haven't played or previously played but didn't get into games like dmc and bayonetta 1 you should try them out again, since Hi-fi rush felt like a great entry point to spectacle fighters, you won't get rhythm game elements but you will get to learn you movesets unique rhythm and get creative with all your options

@@Jabroni_14 I was never good at memorizing preset button combo's, ı am better at stuff that is simple but can be used with each other like abilities in DOOM Eternal or Ultrakill and sometimes at tactical stuff like CS. @noobguy9973 that's fair, tbh rote memorization works best when breaking the info down into smaller chunks. I was also never good at doing combos in fact when I took an iq test it said my memory was atrocious, but when I was 15 and saw a tournament of injustice and noticed players doing these crazy combos that weren't shown in the game, I decided I had to learn how to do one batmans combos because it looked so sick
To this day I struggle to learn combos though whether it's making my own or memorizing someone else's, but once I do, it feels amazing to perform even better than doom eternal weapon switch canceling or doing crazy movement in a platformer or deep traversal system like Spiderman 2

This game and Pizza Tower coming out without some big budget fanfare and out of nowhere is pretty crazy with how good both are. Both are game of the year contenders already and really shows you don't need ALL the money and all this crazy dev pressure to make a great game. I do hope Yahtzee takes a look at Pizza Tower too it deserves even more love for all the work that team put into it and the quality it resulted in.

And the reward for making this great game? Studio closure. F***ing executives
Capitalism product :(
I'm starting to notice Yahtzee has a fondness for rhythm games in general. This one is definitely good, of course.
Imagine a rythm game about ships and pirating.
Although he rightly called out the P5D (and thus by extension the P3D) game as rubbish, I do wonder if he ever got into the Persona 4 Dancing game, given his love of Persona generally and the fact that it had a semi-intriguing story mode based largely around a side character from the original game.
Gameplay once you unlock the highest difficulty is honestly really fun, too.
I mean he was always big into his guitar hero it makes sense really
Or more likely he just enjoys good games in general.
Plus he specifically pointed that the music helped elevate P5 in his kind since it gave the combat rhythm game like feel
I love how the three partner characters all had a purpose both in and out of combat. Peppermint can break energy barriers both on enemies and in the environment, and hit distant switches, Macaron can shatter otherwise indestructible enemy armor and shatter cracked walls, and Korsica can make enemies more susceptible to stun damage, power up generators for platforming challenges, and deactivate the flame walls giving you a reason to revisit old stages.
Was not expecting Yahtzee to actually like this one.
Also, the ending credits section was _amazing_ .

The fucking song choice for the final three levels was absolutely brilliant. Just an insane 2 hours of pure absolute hype
Oooh, that's some stiff competition, because Devil May Cry 5 exists. I think I'm going to give the win to DMC5, but *only* because Kale's second phase is kinda meh. If he maintained the same quality in all three phases he'd have the win.
I'd to think, but MGR:R's finale is probably my favorite. Keeping it in the same genre ballpark, God Hand (as mentioned in this video and my favorite thing with Mikami's name attached) has a fantastic proper final boss (the angra fight is a victory lap). Pizza Tower has one of the most satisfying conclusions I've ever seen, even if it barely has any plot threads to play off.
Anyway -- it's pretty good. Especially on the front of showing the team finally coming together. Kale himself is a pretty good final challenge. Could have done with mixing the gimmicks of phase two in a bit better, but that's a relatively minor complaint.
That last line made me laugh harder than I have in a long time.
same. Grappling hook might be better, but it's usually the first or last thing you hear that stands out the most if it's good anyway.

The game’s certainly doesn’t skimp out on the details, my favorite example (that didn’t got mentioned) was that during the boss fights, they play actual songs with real bands like Nine Inch Nails & The Black Keys. But there’s also “Streamer Mode”, where they actually made original tracks that uses the same beat & motifs as the regular songs, so people can post gameplay without having to worry about copyright. THAT WAS SUCH A GENUIS MOVE & some of the original songs (Too Big to Fail) are perhaps better than the copyrighted songs, IMO.
