    Happy New Year everyone!
    I thought we'd kickstart 2024 with a look at what is possibly my favourite Bankai in the series - Kisuke Urahara's Kannonbiraki Benihime Aratame! It's been about 3 years since we discussed this Bankai in detail, and today I want to assess how strong it actually is...
    With its reality-warping powers and seemingly near-limitless potential, is this the strongest Bankai in Bleach? If not, how high does it rank?

      I would only say the characters who have stronger bankai would be characters like Yamamoto, Aizen (if we get a reveal), Kenpachi, Shunsui.

      Does Ichibei's ink ability really "erase names from reality"? When he covered Yhwach in Ink, no one else forgot his name. They still called him Yhwach. Only Yhwach himself forgot his own name. Perhaps Ichibei's Bankai ability only affects the mind of a specific target covered in ink?

    I personally love how this gives context to Urihara's shikai as well. He isn't manipulating a red energy. He is restructuring his power into different forms. Energy slashes for offense, shields for defense, ropes to bind, and explosives for power.
    I also love how his Bankai also raises the question of who is the puppet and who is the puppet master. Kisuke always seems to be in control, but he also tries to stick to the status quo. So he is under the strings of the powers that be. But he also uses those powers to get what he wants. Benihime is pulling Kisuke's strings, changing his parts for certain outcomes. But he is the one who decided when to become the puppet of his own will.

      Brilliant analysis, its true, he defends the status quo with a zeal. He doesn't have the ambition to build a better world. @@KaiserAfinithat's really shallow and contradicts itself when he helps Ichigo, he's the one who introduced advanced technology and better living standards to the soul society saying he doesn't break the status quo is incredibly naive and mis-informed especially when his actions say otherwise, hell he was the one who brought up a treaty between Hollows and shinigami. The guy doesn't need to tell anyone he's breaking the status quo he just needs to show results, if everyone was like Aizen boasting and trying to one up everyone we'd all be here thinking what Hitler did was somewhat alright. He didn't use the hogyoku cause of the very reason that he's just repeating the same mistake as the original Shinigamis hell Aizen repeated the same mistake and look where he is now? He doesn't even want the position anymore.

    • @Alacaelum
      @Alacaelum Před 5 měsíci +4

      @@yamatonoryuujin4871 You could read it as it being that interacting with Ichigo for so many years made him aware of his own shortcomings, hell... he probably felt that after having to run from SS after Aizen screwing with him and the others.
      But it doesn't mean shed all his opinions, he still is an adherent of the status quo, he prefers to play with and around the "strings" that already exist instead of breaking them, still a strength and weakness.
      The thing with Bleach is that one of its strengths that are a weakness too, is that it doesnt really say how things really work in the verse, we have hints, we know details, we are shown a few answer, but none really answers all, which can be seen as it being that some things are just too complex and ever changing to try and explain, but is frustrating as a reader to have to deal with and we can see that some of those are just copouts.

    • @revenantronin8377
      @revenantronin8377 Před 5 měsíci +45

      @@hyacinth5040 I agree... and that's the point I was making.
      Kisuke is the type of prodigy that can do anything the first time he tries it, whereas Mayuri the type that has the potential to do much better but there's a process of trial and error.
      For example, Kisuke created a kido seal that could completely seal Aizen's power and it worked in one try.
      Mayuri had already been experimenting for possibly tens to hundreds of years with Kenpachi's reiatsu suppressing eyepatch seal, and he could only improve it further whenever Kenpachi's reiatsu would render the current eyepatch useless.
      And that is the same technology he used to keep Aizen suppressed, and he used the information he got from it to further improve it whenever Aizen would get stronger.
      The chair only kept his reiatsu close in order to overwhelm the seals so Mayuri could further improve them.
      See the difference. 10 years later and I bet you, Mayuri's seal technology can completely suppress the old Aizen (I say old because Aizen keeps getting stronger).
      And that's how his bankai also works.
      His genius needs challenge/change to blossom and push past his previous limits, whereas Kisuke's genius creates change and has no limits which is also reflected by his Bankai.
      So in a way, Kisuke's existence is what pushes Mayuri to be better and better.
      Even in their final fights, this is shown.
      Mayuri has to constantly change and adapt to Pernida's increasing dangerous attacks.
      Whereas Askin needs to constantly change his attacks because Kisuke overcomes anything he does easily.
      Basically, Pernida had one ability that required a long process to fully overcome by Mayuri.
      Askin had multiple abilities that required a short process to overcome each one immediately.
      So if Kisuke would have fought Pernida, he would've rendered the nerves useless after being hit by them just once, whereas Mayuri would be in the process of figuring out one poison, only to immediately be hit by another and another and get overwhelmed.
      That's the difference. They are equally geniuses capable of doing the same things, but Kisuke just does things seemingly easily whereas Mayuri has a hard time.
      edit: Kisuke is the type to solve calculus by inputing the problem in a calculator and writing down the final answer.
      Mayuri is the type to slowly break down the math step by step, defining the processes as he goes without using a calculator.
      Basically.

    The Bankai with the ability to reconstruct anything, paired up with the most creative and imaginative Shinigami. Top-tier combo, such a shame we didn’t get to see this in action more during the series.
    I do think Kisuke’s hesitancy or reluctance to use the Bankai ties in with the statement he makes to Askin; that a scientist should want to create with their own hand, not just observe what others create. If he considers Benihime’s power to be that of another, he would prefer not to have her doing the construction instead of himself. She’s really an absolute desperate last resort in his mind.

    To add on something you said earlier about how strong an ability can be, we see different types of strengths in Bleach. Senbonzakura is strong in numbers. Kido is a symbol of how strong Reiatsu can be. Kenpachi's bankai demonstrates how physically strong he can be. Benihime is strong, conceptually. Benihime is as strong as the user's creativity can be allowed to expand upon it. In gaming terminology, the skill ceiling of the bankai is incredibly high. But when he fortified his arm for strength, or attempted to weaken askin, it was just musculature/tendons so touch wasn’t needed.

      I almost wonder if the short time was on purpose, showing how much Bankai Kisuke outclassed Askin. Once activated, a fight where Askin had the slight advantage gets turned on its head and becomes Kisuke's. Askin's abilities don't seem to work after the Bankai is activated and the ability to seemingly remake everything seems to be near limitless, weakening enemies and empowering Kisuke. Range is weird, whether Askin is right or Kisuke basically felt it wasn't needed, he basically held the modification to himself and to the battlefield. The rest of the Sternritter either countered the Bankais by reviving after them into new forms, but Askin never had that ability. Once activated, the fight became one sided for Kisuke and the short showing actually showed it. An interesting question is whether he can alter the enemies and potentially cut their powers. The gift ball was activated before Bankai and the self destruct mechanism seemed like an inconclusive ability, so could Kisuke have actually stopped it before activation or reconstruct their shrifts or if it only works on physical bodies.

      @floppa731 I could never tell if that was how Pernida worked or if it was the concept of change that the left arm was supposed to be. Pernida was supposed to represent change, continually growing through the fight. There was also the statement that Pernida gained information during the fight from those he used his nerves on. The weird part is I think it goes beyond just stealing the ability, I think he can deliver counters based on what he learned. The skin speeding he may have gotten from Mayuri, but it was for a freezing agent, not the nerves. And that bankai was made to counter the nerves ability, so that really wasn't its power, it's ability was to counter everything, something Pernida was already doing. The question is whether being remade would counter Pernida or if Pernida could counter the reconstruction.

    If you look at one of the databooks it gives us the name of the technique kisuke used against aizen at the start of their fight. The laser that pierced him. It's called kaizo kido jugeki byakurai. Kaizo kido in english means modified kido. Which makes some bells ring in my head.
    Urahara's shikai power is to reconstruct/replicate other techniques he has seen. Or it is to modify them by adding the red energy it uses. byakurai is the name of hado number 4. So that technique is a modified hado number 4.
    My assumption is that all of his techniques are other people's techniques that he is imitating. The difference is that they are fired using benihime's characteristic red energy as opposed to what the technique originally uses. Or they are techniques he can use but with some added power from benihime.
    As for the anime fat chance of them improving the activation sequence. I don't want to be negative but look at how the bankai so far have been treated, kokujo tengen myo'o, jakuho raikoben, etc. One frame and they are out, no animation or anything.

    What ever he restructures comes undone after his bankai ends, there's a page panel when his bankai is breaking done the restructured arms where the stitches are start to bleed...meaning if he restructured his whole body and then released his bankai would causes his body to fall apart and probably die, I'm pretty positive once his bankai ended he lost his eyes again. Anything stitched up becomes undone is the draw back to using its ability that's why he only restructured his left arm and not his whole body.
    The panel I'm referring to is just below the page where his bankai collapses, where he says, "This is the end for me" you can see little bloods oozing out of the wounds he gave himself when he restructured his arm. It's a small detail but I feel like that's a HUGE detail that many overlooked. Which can connect back to what he said to Renji about his bankai is not used for lending Power to other because it's not permanent, so if he trained Chad all the training Chad had during his bankai would become undone once it's over

    • @Fur_gene
      @Fur_gene Před 3 měsíci

      It doesn't necessarily mean that if he reconstruct his body with his bankai, once the bankai is deactivated, his body will then fall apart. That wrong.
      Any modifications that's done on his body will merely be undone, not that his body will fall apart. If he makes his body 10 times stronger with his bankai, once he deactivates his bankai, the 10 times will be off and his body will be back to normal.
      Buh, there's some arguments to that tho. If you notice, after Kisuke collapsed and got his bankai deactivated, normally, everything that got stitched up using his bankai should have been off as well, buh if you noticed, the hole he made on Askin gift ball was still very much open and Nel was shown thinking of entering the gift ball using the hole.
      So, what's the deal here? Is tye effects of his bankai truly temporal or really permanent?

      @thelastspectre8141 Před 3 měsíci

      @josephbabatundeisaac yeah without a clear explanation from kubo can't really understand it but there's that one panel after he collapses that shows the stitches he made on himself after he reconstructed his arm started bleeding, which leads me to think it's similar to surgery where if a doctor cuts you open and then stitches you back up your fine but when the stitches are remove you open back up and bleeding so if benahima is like the doctor what ever she cut and stitches is fine until she deactivates then the stitches come undone but the wound stays. Because urahara wasn't cut on his arm prior to him modifying himself so he shouldn't have been bleed from his modification once benahima ended if that makes sense

    My theory for why Urahara is reluctant to use his Bankai for training others is twofold.
    1. He's probably withholding information others could possibly leak to opponents. Given that his opponents are also members of soul society, this is a healthy fear.
    2. Benehime, much like Urahara, probably can't always control who and what it tinkers with and be completely in control of the consequences. Recently Urahara is trying his best to stop pushing the needle because he knows how far reckless tinkering can destroy others lives. Anything too close to the doll it starts to play with, regardless of his wishes. Highly fatal but a fellow like that Quincy you want to keep at a distance to little truth to keep him away.
    It gets most powerful in my book.

    Idk lil heacanon, maybe Benihime has to touch something to PERMANENTLY re-constructure it as at the end of the fight Kiske's eyes aren't destroyed again whereas everything else is.

    Makes sense how he was able to create the Hogyoku given how broken Urahara's Bankai is.

  • @StCrimson667

    Kisuke's Bankai is always one which has stuck with me, the impact it makes when it appears, the simplicity yet effectiveness of its power, and just how deep its references seem to go! The Bankai's name references "opening doors" which is actually a metaphor for dissection, opening something up just like opening a pair of doors which gives it a pretty grisly edge to match its power and also potentially hints at the nature of its power, perhaps Kisuke needs to understand something's structure before he can restructure it or maybe he learns about its structure as he takes it apart. I also just love the theory going around the community that Benihime Aratame hints at Kisuke's past, given that the Bankai takes the form of a woman with long black hair who cuts things open and stitches them closed. Perhaps saying exactly who Kisuke might be related or formerly involved with.

    I'd assume the way the stitch paths work is by remaking a bit of the environment into stitches then running them along in a particular direction. Something like making an automaton that stitches the path.

    Interesting correlation between his Bankai and Mayuri. Both are the basis of various manipulations of form, and are highly technical. One is a puppet. One is based on silk moth breeding. A Surgeon/Physicist. And a Biologist/Geneticist. Including Aizen, you’ve got a Psychologist/Philosopher. I think he might get the forms of their power like right on.

    I do personally believe that Rukia or Kenpachi could potentially have greater bankai with enough experience using them. She could potentially freeze him right down to his soul at a speed that would make everything he can do useless. Kenpachi could probably just cut through any solution Kisuke would have. Especially if you can cut Benihime herself. That, however, would come down to who is faster.

    It would be awesome if, since he has been under its spell before, he could use his Bankai to tweak his senses so that Aizen can not so easily control them. The pure rage Aizen would have at being out maneuvered by him would be amazing.

    If I had to guess I'd say the only limit his bankai is the subjects potential he can enhance anything to the maximum potential of the subject so he would be likely on par with kenpachi or ichigo but not invulnerable ( skin could be hardened to be similar to arankar skin but hard but still cutable )

    We can not always expect slow and theatric build ups on manga panels when it comes to bankai, true this is what happened when uraharas bankai was reveled but I'm sure we will get a beautiful build up when its animated ,possibly with a little 3D Effect like we saw with Rose's Rōjūrō Ōtoribashi😁

    I've only ever thought of Kiske's Bankai to be the pinnacle of what Mayuri turned his bankai into in the tybw a great representation of the type of scientist Kiske is and the gap between himself and Mayuri but after watching this video I had a thought
    If Kiske's Bankai has a aoe it can be one of two things that impacted his fight with Askin
    One being Askin's gift ball creating the area they're fighting in made Kiske's range cover the whole area and a little outside of it
    Or
    Kiske himself works as a type of tracker and his bankai's effect spreads in a small aoe around wherever he is

    As for whether or not Benihime needs to touch to work or not...I imagine he's simply decieving his opponant by mixing in some truths in with the lies. For a guy that prepares for every variable, I think he's the kind of man that would do anything to win.

  • @GrumpyCoffeeBean
    @GrumpyCoffeeBean Před 3 měsíci

    The limits are determined only by Kisuke's understanding of the variables. The moment he understands a power he could potentially alter it.
    What I wonder is could Kisuke restructure Kempachi's arm in such a way that he could use his Bankai without absolutely turning it into pulp...

    It’s an impressive Bankai for sure but it definitely has its limits otherwise Aizen couldn’t walk away from their fight or remain immortal. I’d imagine reiatsu would definitely impact how difficult it’d be for him to restructure his opponent.
    I came to a similar conclusion that it’s a more tactile version of ichimonji with it enhancing or hindering what it interacts. Eyes restored to 100% acuity✅Arms enhanced to 500% strength✅ But it doesn’t seem to be able to make his body immune Kyoka Suigetsu or Gift Ball or make his body intangible. It can restructure anything on his relative power scale but not necessarily turning anything into ANYTHING but improved versions of what they were. I’d give anything for more details from Klub Outside but there’s so many unseen Bankai left to be explained.
