  • Today we do an entire hour of "Get It Off Your Chest" with Matt Pranka. Matt recently retired from a high level Army Special Operations Unit (Read into that as much as you want), a USPSA Grand Master, and the owner of X-Ray Alpha LLC Training Company. Recently Matt has been posing questions on his IG page that have shaken up the status quo in the areas of Tactics, Training, and Competition. So I decided to have him come back on the show and elaborate on those thoughts.
    The next hour may hurt some feelings but that is not the intent. The intent is to start thinking about things from another point of view. A view that has been forged out of accomplishments at the highest level.

    The MOST common theme I see in every “niche” training class (low light, VCQB, injured shooter, CQB etc.) I’ve attended, AI’d, observed on the ground or catwalk is a lack of practical marksmanship. Not even talking about needing to drill out the X-ring of a B8 at 25, just keeping it all in the friggin 8-ring at minimum.
    Everyone’s grip, trigger manipulation, grip, gun handling skills, and GRIP should probably be at least 80% squared the fuck away if they wanna do other shit. Because it ain’t gonna get any better when you start stacking tasks layer by layer on top of someone’s shitty fundamentals.
    Only into the first 8 minutes and already diggin it.

    As a 12 year LE guy that has met and learned from Matt I can say he’s as good as gold. I will also say majority of law enforcement agencies don’t have the funds to truly invest in their officers like they should and have them trained up. So officers are faster to use unnecessary levels of force when, if they were trained they could wait longer before going lethal. I also agree you guys hit the nail on the head with most of these guys in the training community are too worried about fantasyland than actually teaching shit that will keep their students alive. You don’t need to be in full kit to teach shit, there’s a time and place for it but a lot of it is dress up. Thank you guys for doing this.

      Let's be completely honest here. Being a police officer isn't even in the top 10 most dangerous jobs list. It's not an easy job, and it is dangerous, but 99.99% of cops retire without ever getting into a gun fight. Training the whole police department to become GM, or even C level shooters is just not practical. Police Departments are actually extremely invested in their men for what they actually do. Movies and media have completely distorted reality as to what cops are actually doing.

    • @echojacobs
      @echojacobs Před 3 lety

      @@dankymcdank611 they’re not that invested. They just have funds to pay out lawsuits. They figured out it’s cheaper to do that, than actually spend the money on their guys. You don’t need to be a GM as a cop...but the abysmal ass shooting for majority of cops is BS. NYPD has a 12% hit rate in gun battles. That’s ridiculous. Raise the standard.

    It is not changing in law enforcement enough to make an immediate impact. Any changes I have seen are typically among small tactical units within departments that have less scrutinized training budgets and discretion. The reason law enforcement agencies seek out advance tactical skills rather than marksmanship is because their firearms instructors do not always have those skills to administer in-house. I will admit, like X-ray said, I do believe there is hesitation to rack and stack scores but I believe the fear comes from a different place. I believe departments are way behind the curve when factoring in modern weapons and the abundance of free training adversaries can obtain. There definitely needs to be a change in culture.

    Firearms training is way down on todays admin list of priorities. Community policing, racial bias, hug a thug, and de-escalation training are more important to them. The 5-10% of shooters in the department seek training on their dime because they are not going to get it at the department. I have been turned down so many times for shooting schools I stop counting. Always the same lame excuse "It wasn't in the budget".

    @kurtweber7085 Před 3 lety +2

    Hey! I'm a Range 37 Wizard and I resemble that remark.
    Sometimes the $5 words are better for explaining things than 1-syllable words, especially for someone who is teaching. First, because it's sometimes impossible to adequately explain complex physiological processes without using the correct terminology. Second, you shouldn't say things that are wrong. For example, if I'm in your class and you use "muscle memory" to explain the process you probably lost me, especially if the way you use it in a way that leads me to believe that you think your muscles will remember how to do something.
    It just depends on the context. If I'm teaching how to run an indirect fire section with FDC to Navy SEALs then I'll speak slowly and use small words (I kid because I love), but if I'm teaching 4 MDs how to perform unaided night observation then I will tell them to look off to the side but explain why using rods, cones, and visual purple. It depends on what will best convey what I want to teach to the intended audience. That's one of the bad things about using the internet to teach, you are reaching a much broader audience, so choosing how you explain things is much harder to do.
