How to make a strong wood step stool - DIY Woodworker Weekend Project
Vložit
- čas přidán 29. 10. 2020
- This video describes a good beginner woodworker project - The step stool. I discuss the strategy for building each part and demonstrate primarily with hand tool woodworking, but I also use some power tools. I show several different variations made from quarter sawn oak, red oak, walnut, and maple.

Very practical and smooth
Thank you for your time in making this video.
My pleasure! Fun to share a passion for building things from wood.
liked from Tanzania
Like from Brazil
It was a good study. 🇹🇷🙏
I've been making tons of these recently for our little boy to be able to get up onto chairs, use the bathroom etc. I like this design so I might try it, no domino joiner so I'll probably just use a couple of dowels. Thanks for the video!
Dowels should work if you use two of them to prevent rotation of the rails. Instead of a domino joiner, I have also hand cut the tenons as I do in the plans on Etsy. Here is a video on hand cutting tenons czcams.com/video/KXoCV_fyUiY/video.html . It was my first video, so no music and I was brief. But I do enjoy hand cutting them and then using a shoulder plane or rabbet plane to trim them to the size of the mortise.
*Great stools, I love these things! Your video is over the top - everything is clear and understandable. I sometimes make stools too and not only )*
Awesome! Thank you!

I’d love it as a small bench
Great video!
Thanks!
Nice truck oh and nice stool allso.
Hope to make a video with the truck as the center piece - wood rails - in the near future.
These are awesome. Great job.
Thanks for your comment and support.
So excited by all the hand tool work in this video, I gritted my teeth when I saw the tablesaw, and then you hauled out the Domino. Still, a nice video.
About to start making videos again. Will try to use as many hand tools as possible, because I enjoy them. However, I will occasionally use power tools and even a CNC Router.
Please start making your videos again, and when you do, treat us to an explanation of your choice of wood (and style of cut) and especially of your hand tools. I especially enjoy watching you craft the Arts and Crafts style products.@@builditnotes7551
Nice , im inspired, im going to make one. Except, im going to use power tools, to much manual work for me. I got exhausted buy just watching you. 😰 😬
Like the simple design and clean look. A quick question for anyone and everyone. Why not cut the legs at a 5 degree angle to make them lean towards the center? Would it not make the stool just a bit more kid friendly for sitting or climbing on? I plan to go on a scrap wood hunt later today to see if I can find some wood to make some of my own. Nice inspiration. Thanks.
The morise and the tenon shoulders would have to be angled. That is a little tricky but definitely doable.
I'm new to this so what kind of saw is used to cut mortise in rail? Is thhat a domino?
I used a tenon saw. Sometimes also use a carcass saw. Most of my nicer saws were from Lie Nielsen. I did use loose tenon, made by a Festool domino, on the rails. Have also just cut tenons instead on some step stools.
@@builditnotes7551I'm thinking of using a plunge router with jigs, am I on the right track?
Yeah, its a Festool Domino, a relatively pricey tool. Dowels or biscuits might work.
what are plans I"d like to build this stool
The plans are on Etsy at this link www.etsy.com/shop/BuildItNotes
I’m glad certain people are made for this kind of craft. How old were you when you first began learning? I love that you do a lot of it by hand, bravo!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Any idea of the designs weight limit?
I have seen two people on one of them. Total weight maybe 360lbs, but have not tested all the way to failure.
Awesome Thank you for the follow up. @@builditnotes7551
👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks
Any way to get the layout or dimensions of this?
Details plans are offered here plans are on Etsy at this link @t If you just want basic dimensions, they are 8"x13" step and the geometry of the base is changed to match the step stool height.
Here is the link again, not sure what happened. www.etsy.com/shop/BuildItNotes
@@builditnotes7551 cool, thanks!
