  • Southern Chessie 2716 documents 2 excursions, Operated by Chesapeake & Ohio 2716 in the Spring of 1982. First, we see 2716 operate an Excursion from Atlanta, GA to Chattanooga, TN on April 17th, 1982 , Then followed by an Excursion pulled by 2716 from Atlanta, GA To Toccoa,GA that took place the following weekend of April 24th & 25th, 1982. 2716 (which was leased by the Southern/Norfolk Southern Railroad from 1981 - 1994, for usage in the Southern Steam Program) was used extensively for the 1981 & 1982 season in excursion service for the Southern Steam Program until it was sidelined due to mechanical problems that put the engine out of service.
    For those interested in learning more about 2716's time in the Southern Steam Program, please consider watching the Southern Steam Program Documentary (also on the channel):

    I wonder... if 2716 and T&P 610 had ever doubleheaded during the steam program, would that have been the most powerful steam excursion train up to that point?

    For anybody wondering where some of the passenger cars from this consist are nowadays, the open air observation is at the Reading & Northern being used on their Lehigh Gorge trips under the R&N applied name of "Appalachian Trail", and coach 1086 is at the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC alongside its sister coach 1081. 1086 is, mostly, out of the public's view though, and out of use in outdoor storage. I'd like to see it rebuilt, but getting that coach back up and running isn't really a priority for the Museum given the amount of operational cars they already use for their trains. Coach 1081 is in usage on their trains though.
    The baggage coach combine that was used as an open air car is now at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in it's original Central Of Georgia livery as CofG 390.
    Aside from the 2716 which is under rebuilding in Ravenna, Kentucky, I'm unaware of where any of the other pieces of rolling stock that were in this consist are nowadays.

    I wonder what is the origins of 2716’s water tender?

    • @NickelPlatedProductions
      @NickelPlatedProductions  Před rokem +10

      Originally the tender used behind L&N M1 1975. Converted for usage as a water tender by Southern Railway, renumbered Southern WT53 & first used behind T&P 610 in 1978. Also used behind 2839, 2716, and 765 1979-1982. Cut down and painted green, used behind 4501 1984-85. Given an N&W-style tender no., painted black, and used with 1218 1987-1991. Painted Tuscan red and used behind 611 July-Nov. 1994. Now used behind MILW 261.
