The fact that Apple not only decided to stick with 256GB as the entry storage, but is in fact SLOWER storage than the previous model is absurd. It should at the very least have a note on their website specifying these detail

@@indigetal wtf are you saying

I'm curious if Apple would ever decide to create a Macbook SE. Maybe keep the Macbook Air M1 design in principle but tweak it in a way that they could sell it for... I dunno $699 or less and have it start competing with Chromebooks and the like (or at least the peception of a super cheap, gateway product into Mac OS).
Now that I can get on board with
Yes. You have my vote!
they're not doing that for another 10 years probably lmao
They would never do it, apple sells status first then hardware. Opening that market will just make them lose profit from the top tier laptops. I know people that just use Microsoft word and have the MacBook Pro 16 inch, its just easy money for them.
Going that cheap might hurt the brand overall.
imagine smashing out an intro even more cinematic and impressive than apple's own marketing, then cold opening with 'aight, what's up?' Such great content.
His intros are awesome, but I think we can still agree that the apple cinematics are still better?
@@ducksreviewtech3396 Yes. I feel like Mkbhd studies apple's design philosophy and makes intros with those principles
Marques is the Gold Standard...
i don't see how him saying aight what's up is very special or peculiar...are you having an 'exaggerated swagger' moment?
He 1000% pays others to do this stuff for em folks. This isn't him doing his own stuff these days. He's paying folks to do it. Which honestly isn't a bad thing tbh.
And this is why I watch these videos. He hits all the points Iâm curious about and other points make me consider things I havenât previously pondered.
But looks like a refurb base model will be perfect for my needs because Iâll just be recording some stuff off my Focusrite and nothing too intensive. But Iâm glad I know everything I need now is in this package and makes me feel more comfortable parting with the money.

That Intro was so incredibly done. The M shifts at right a little before going to the left and that kind of detail makes this the best tech channel on youtube.
Even if M didn't move to right, it would have looked the same.
@@ketankbc No, it wouldn't, it shifted to make space for 2, it looks cleaner. Putting 2 without shifting wouldn't make the intro as good as it is.

Does anyone know the name of the song used in the intro? I already know it's by 20syl
In short: It's animated well.
One thing I was concerned with the M2 MacBook Air being so thing is it possible to flex the base with the keyboard during transport. Also, one thing you may want to consider when travelling in the hotter climates heat built up is an issue even with the MacBook pro. You may consider then using a fan assisted base powered by the usb
Iâm a Data Engineer as well as a hobbyist music producer that recently upgraded from the 2016 MacBook Pro w/Touch Bar to the MacBook Air M2 (specâd out to 10 cores, 24gbs of Memory and 1tb SSD). For me, the deciding factor was the portability even though I knew the Pro was the superior machine. I have to say that since using it, this new laptop is beyond sufficient for my workflow and the trade off on performance for a lighter and more compact form factor was definitely worth it for me. No doubt I see myself keeping this machine for many, many years.
Same. I went with a $2k-specc'd M2 Air. I know the 14" MBP has better performance and more ports, but my laptops are constantly traveling and moving, and I'll trade some performance for portability. Everyone acts like it's sacrilege to max these out (instead of going for the 14"), but that's just because they can't comprehend other people's use profiles. They just stare at benchmarks at all day, and that's all a device is to them.

I have a suggestion for the possible scratches around the USB-C port, which worked out fine for years on my space gray iPad: I usually put the USB head in diagonally first, so that one of its edges is halfway in and other edge is out. Then I push the edge inside the port wall and correct the direction of the USB head while doing so. It then easily fits in, and it almost does not take additional time and effort. It really helped me not to scratch the port surrounding, I do the same thing for lightning ports on iPhones as well.
With the M1 Air they made a computer with an exceptional price/quality ratio. With this one they're making a very desirable product, but it comes back in the luxury territory, rather than the utilitaristic one.
Which is probably why they kept the M1
In a few years it will most likely be back to its 999$ price tag just like the last model did.

This M2 mac really proves how awesome M1 really was. It was the perfect balance of power and efficiency and worked perfectly in a fanless design. The M2 may be more powerful, but that extra thermal output and downgraded SSD is definitely a caveat to that extra power.
To anyone looking to get the M2 as their laptop, I would take a moment to consider the M1 Macbook air, too. It does so many things right, it's WAY cheaper, and it's not as much of a downgrade as you would think.
yeah I was waiting to see what the m2 had. Just got my m1 16gb for 1200, no brainer tbh. For what I need it's plenty.
You can't do the thermal mod on M2 Air either. It's so cheap and easy and completely removes the need for a fan. They could have fixed the thermal issue with a $1 pad but instead crippled it so you have to spend an extra $300 to "upgrade" to a noisy fan. What a joke.
@@Rnshah5 did exactly the same, 200 extra for 8gb more ram versus better design is a no brainer
Its not WAY cheaper. This is shitty advice. The M2 Air is completely redesigned and better is almost every single way.
its funny cuz you can get the m1 for well under $1000 if you know where to look
I got my m1 air for $800 on black friday
honestly that should be the starting price now, and the m2 air for $1000 starting
The hidden performance gap between the base and higher end models reminds me of the whole debacle with the 24-in iMac where it missed a fan and heat pipe in the base unit and Apple never really disclosed it.
i wonder how much of this is due to chip-shortages?
@@markslima1557 Could be. Apple never disclosing it is obviously entirely their decision, though.
I have the upgraded 24" iMac and after seeing performance numbers, it isn't really worth the extra $200 to get the extra fan. They're very close in performance. It's a fantastic machine that never really gets much mention since the laptops are Apple's big sellers.
The fan thing made basically no difference for the sort of customers buying a 24â iMac, and the same is true with the SSD here. If it bothers you, but the higher end model, but for 99.9% of their customers itâs a complete non issue.
That intro omg. Thanks for the info, my wife just picked her m2 air up and she's already in love with it, it fits her workflow perfectly
i'm finally looking to upgrade from my 2012 macbook pro a decade later (it's been a great run, but it's getting hot all the time and the fan is going bananas, the battery is terrible, and it's no longer supported by updates). i've been debating between the M1 and the M2 airs, and i THINK despite the higher price, i'm going with this one, because it's 2 years newer, and i'd like to get a longer use/support out of it. (i'd love to go another 10 years with a new one, but i'd be really happy with 6-7 too). i'm thinking of going 16ram/512gb in starlight, fingers crossed it's not super fingerprint heavy.

I recently got the M2 macbook air. I got the 16gb ram and 1TB SSD for about $1600. It's pretty good so far, although I'm biased because I haven't had a working laptop for like 5 years lol.
How did you get it for that cheap? i mean with that specs it will cost you around 2k with the taxes.
Thank you! Iâve been holding off replacing my broken 2015 MacBook Pro and Iâve gone back and forth trying to figure out which one to get. I ended up ordering the m2 air 10 core, 16 ram and 512 memory. I really like that starlight color. I donât do work on my laptop or anything intense, just a Mom who needs something more than what I can do on iPad and phone and organize photos and stuff. I love how to the point this is. I feel like these laptops are really impressive, but they're well-understood now. We need a dash of context and relevant zoom-ins on what makes this one different. Exactly what's in your video. No Apple hype. Just some facts and some opinions that IMO really naturally follow from those facts. This was a really quick way to get I think a really solid perspective on this laptop.
Thanks for shouting out the M1 MacBook Air! Some of us have that, and it really does deserve attention, especially at the 256GB storage tier as you mentioned.
Yea, you can't do a laptop review in a bubble. Mentioning how the recommended spec means that the price will be close to other high end mac books helps inform consumers about what will be the right decision for them.
I always like watching your reviews. Youâre pretty straight forward and donât hold back on your thoughts. Thank you for that.
Nice review. Personally Iâm glad the base model M2 exists as Itâs more than enough for my needs and it saves me some cash.
I just got one, upgrading from a 2018 Mac mini (Intel), and I'm really loving it. I see some of the midnight color scraping off near the ports, and the fingerprints everywhere are kind of annoying (I can't stop cleaning it), but overall it's pretty good. And, the M2 chip is pretty fast, with noticeable improvements from Intel. The main issue though is the lack of ports. I do have a USB hub from Anker, but even with that I still found myself running out of USB-C ports.
I thought about buying this and then after seeing it wasnât going to be available for a month, I went to Costco today and bought an M1 Air for $850, a $150 off, super deal.
Thatâs my boy

A discounted entry-level base M1 MBA is _still_ by far the best bang-for-the-buck value laptop for nearly all normal regular everyday laptop users. Not even close.
I was considering the M2 Air; the mag-safe, the 20% up in Brightness, the new design (perhaps), but the 256 Mem already felt a bit tight and the increasing likelihood of throttling as photo / video files get bigger and tasks more complicated the calculation changes dramatically. If I need to up the Mem to 500 the price goes up ÂŁ1,500, which makes the M2 50% more the the M1, and that makes me reconsider the whole proposition. A very useful vid, thank U.
It's a 25% increase in brightness! 400 nits to 500 nits!
I was waiting to maybe buy it and upgrade from my M1 which was my first mac. Now I'm going straight back to windows. Some really nice laptops out there!
Apple's memory options and pricing are an elevated form of scam. MacOS, from what I've seen so far, has increasingly fewer advantages compared to Windows. And if more software was available, Linux would crash them both.
@@dirtyharry1881 windows is the best OS. However, when it comes to laptops, there is nothing like the new MacBooks in the laptop space from any OEMs which is the reason I own a MacBook Pro 16in with the m1 max. It strikes the right balance of performance to battery life.

Your video has answered my questions. Thank you very much for sharing this method that works for all platforms.
On point the intro, as always !
These intros are getting so freaking good my man! To the editors and camera operators, cheers.
I think this intro was shot on his camera robot
@@SimonWilke Yeah, I'm sure it was, it still takes a good operator to input the commands, get the timing down, etc. Such a cool piece of tech
i love that youâre still using Motifâs by 20syl đ i still listen to it bc of your use of Ongoing Thing. canât remember which video that was
Love the starting animation!
Great review! I'm sticking to my old Mac Pro - does exactly what I want when I need.
I absolutely love how Marques talks in these videos. Feels so effortless and conversational
Ditto. Really strong review. Straight to the point with a good overview on the products.
You rock man !!! the best method ever !! thanks for sharing !!
your videos are really helpful, but also your speaking is very clear which is great for 2x speed !!
In 10 mins Marques helped me finally decide on something Iâve been pondering over for months, thank you!! Iâm going with the pro instead of the air! *my pockets start whimpering*
Brian Tong makes great videos! The Final Cut Pro render times test he did for the new MacBook Air was also super impressive
Hi Marques, with what version did you did the testing of the performance of the new macbook air? 8gb memory or 16gb?
very informative and detailed review thank you!
The black M2 has to be the cleanest laptop Iâve ever seen. So beautiful.
The wedge shape was iconic. I will hold onto my Air forever! That moment when Steve took it out of an envelope was iconic! I have always wanted an air and I finally got one...the M1 Air after being a PC user for all my life.
Same here. I got mine near the end of 2021 and it's one of my favourite devices ever!
So a laptop that was unveiled in 2008 is still ahead in design even in 2022
Damnnnnn!! That shot at the start of the video with your robot was so coool đźâđš
I plan to get this MacBook once the back to school promotion rolls out in the UK, but Iâm still somewhat considering the 16â MBP bc the mini LED display and promotion are nice to have things that I want but donât need
Thank you! Awesome review. I still donât know if Iâll buy an M2 MacBook Air (16GB, 1To) or a 14â MacBook Pro with the same RAM and SSD. Iâm
upgrading from an old Mac Mini. Iâm a musician, using Logic Pro (a lotâŠ) and Final Cut (not every day). Your review is helping me, thank you again.
nice one. I got an M1 air, more than happy with it. It's such a massive step up from an intel and spanks the ass of my work laptop that costs 3 times as much. I will probably wait and get the M4 as an upgrade coz I don't need more
How does it run heavy excel sheets
Same I love my M1 air too. I wouldn't even be thinking of upgrading if I had gotten 16gb of ram. I was such an impatient ass when I bought it. I could afford 16gb of ram, but it would take two weeks to arrive cause inventory. So I got the 8gb 512gb version instead just cause I could get it same day.
For most stuff I am still fine, but there have been times when I had to close stuff to help it keep running fast. Usually chrome lol. I am thinking of just selling this one and getting a m1 air with 16gb, I don't even need m2.
@@theNimboo what do u use ur macbook for that u need 16 gb just asking bc im just using for note taking and web browsing
@@henryt5780 auto-refreshing tabs tend to grow in memory usage the longer you keep them open, due to a long-time JavaScript memory management issue. The code frees-up the memory, the JS engine is meant to free that up to the system, but the JS engine actually holds-onto it instead. Then when the website requests more memory, it gets given new RAM by the system. To this end, a Gmail tab can consume multiple gigabytes if youâve left it open a few weeks, but restarting the browser takes it back to a few hundred megabytes. I even had a Gmail tab grow to 12GB once when I forgot to restart it every few weeks.
@@theNimboo I haven't experienced any slow down or lack of resource at all and I have the base model, but then I'm pretty much using it like an ipad. What are you doing to need more ram?
Just got this starlight like 5 days ago...i am loving it, last time i used a Macbook was the Pro mid 2012, I switched to Windows after that and now decided to come back to macbook with this, looking forward to what the newer models will have to offer so i can upgrade.
I actually just picked up the midnight one, loving it so far!
What is the storage you chose and Ram size?
I think about the only way they could design a dark colored laptop that doesn't show fingerprints would be to add some type of texture to the surface and I don't know how they could do that. That really looks sleek when it's clean though!
