10 tips I wish I knew before IB | IB advice and mindset

  • A special edition of IB Lilia. After completing 2 years of courses, a total of 14 exams, an Extended Essay, TOK, and CAS (phew!), I have quite a few things that I would have done differently. Here’s some advice on what I wish I had known before IB that would have helped me stay a little saner throughout the program. Although the program is very demanding and challenging, at the end you’ll look back and say, “the IB wasn’t as hard as I thought it’d be!”... or maybe not, but at least you can say #IBdone. Best of luck!

  • @Sophia-hs7et
    @Sophia-hs7et Před 5 lety +508

    The absolute biggest pro I have for IB, experience-wise, is the type of students and situations you surround yourself with. I didn't really realize how much nicer my day-to-day experience was until late last semester(before summer break), when my non-IB friends were complaining about how immature some kids in their class were, how nothing got done, how they couldn't learn anything with disruptive classmates. I mean, there were grade 11s, literal 17 year olds, pulling down each other's pants in an english class! On multiple occasions! I'm really fuckin glad I don't have that experience.
    Also, since I'm surrounded by a ton of people around me who are way better at communicating well and asking questions when it's useful, I learn even more than the teacher usually has to teach because new ideas are brought up by the students.
    It's not free of some high-school clichés and the feelings that I am literally the worst and suckiest person ever, but my already first-world problems are a little less problematic.

    • @IvyLilia
      @IvyLilia  Před 6 lety +95

      Hi! My best advice is to get enough sleep (even if it means putting off some of your work until later) because it will always help you feel more productive and attentive the next day than any finished assignment ever could. Other than that, I found that finding a planner or calendar method helped me stay the most productive. If you find yourself procrastinating, try to break up big assignments into smaller chunks. I'll be posting a video about how to NOT procrastinate soon, so subscribe and look out for it!

    • @kohlcooke8789

      I would say you should try to will yourself to get stuff done in advance. Think about how good it feels to get good grades and use that mentality to work. I'm still a freshman, but I've gotten plenty of sleep and good grades by staying ahead and always finishing a day or two before the due date so that I have time to revise. Good luck my friend

The elder one at 9 grade and the other at 8 grade now, and they both are quite hard working. Their sore on each criteria is among 5-8, But they have a problem with choosing their EE group in the near future. So I often forward some video like this to my kids for reference . I’m really only applying to IB so i can feel smart lol i dont really care much about college credit for myself (tho its Nice to have)
    Although i’m not really sure because IB doesn’t seem worth the effort. I like creative stuff. Im hella creative, and honestly Idk if Im going to college. I Remember my sister (who has graduated and is now going to college) took the IB program for 3 years, and one night i heard her crying on the phone talking to our mom about how she is so anxious and stressed out about school. Im really proud of her.

    • @Endellion_The_Hellion
      @Endellion_The_Hellion Před 5 lety +5

      Noirblanque I don’t know what state your IB program is in, but in the city I’m in, I applied for IB because they’re the only program in my city with AP philosophy as an elective and I want to go to major in philosophy in college. They have electives that are very interesting and worth it, from what I’ve heard, that are often exclusive to IB in the area, so you should try it. If you apply for IB, feeling smart most likely won’t work as your success will be drowned out by other kids and you’ll just be normal, most likely. I had a brother who failed out of IB, and so I’m obviously not an expert, but I’m just saying. IB isn’t for feeling smart, I don’t think, but rather to be in smaller groups with hard working individuals. I’m a rising pre-IB (9) student, so I don’t know. If you’re also a rising 9 pre-IB kid, or even just another rising 9th grader, good luck this year!

    hi, I have a question I couldnt find the answer to in the internet: Do you have to talk a lot in class in order to get good grades? In my home country the equivalent to the IB requires you to constantly raise your hand and say as much as possible (it really is quantity over quality). And than your final grade in every class consists of 70% your performance in class and only 30% of your essay grade. Is it the same for the IB?

Having said that, I won't tell her what to do but present the research before her such that she should know clearly what is a normal program and what is IB. Right now, I don't think she has all the information she needs to make her decision. Your thought process is very clear so I thought of asking you this question. Should the students go into IB even if they don't intend to go outside the country and study? Should only high achieving students go into IB or can sincere students also achieve success there? Could you please provide some guidance. I would greatly appreciate. Thank you.

    My sister(who did a lot of AP but no IB) has been telling me how horrible the IB program is and how everyone in it is miserable, but I want to push myself. Most of my middle school friends(including my best friend) are telling me “oh, you do you, but I actually want to have fun and have a life in high school”. It’s stressing me out and making me think that maybe I’m not good enough for it, but I’ve been planning for the program for a while now. I don’t have to worry about it TOO much right now since I’m just starting high school, but it’s still heavily on my mind since I’m taking the pre-reqs. Any advice?

      @@LolLol-yn8uv I would say yes to all highly qualified professions. IB is a ton of knowledge and they add into the curriculum ways to apply the knowledge in a theoretical way. However the lack of vocational skills (apart from sports and art) and sports isn't even a choice is what sets regular educational programmes where you learn a trade tells you that highly qualified professions where you apply intelligence is a direction IB will lead you.
      I've studied IB in Washington and the sense of international cultures, and small classes was phenomenonal. However studying art in University was a complete let down and I retrained in plastering in the construction industry to set up my own business which is successful.
      I studied hl bio, economics and art. I left early due to fear of failing a lower language which I had no previous experience in. I sort of wish I had stuck to French instead of Spanish and I would have probably completed with a 4-.

On my last and only other test this year, I did get a 92%. I'm also part of many clubs like robotics and I am in the student council in my school. I wanna know if I have a good chance or not cuz it's been rattling around in my head for days now.

    • @hmmnotsure
      @hmmnotsure Před 4 lety +1

      @Mai A Nah, the thing is that with math in our school, they mark us with knowledge (if you know the answer), thinking (demonstrating knowledge of math) application (solving) and communication (easy for others to understand) and I basically got a 4/A on thinking (or knowledge, can't remember), a 3/B on knowledge (or thinking, can't remember), a 3/B on application and a 1/D on communication because my teacher said I wrote too much. So I'm thinking that communication mark is gonna drop my chances so I've been stressed. But last time I'm pretty sure I got a 4-/A- on communication but my teacher did say I would get like a 1/D or fail in highschool if I kept writing so much so I've been worried... 😓 By the way, I'm only in grade 8 so a 3 or B/72% is pretty bad, or at least in my opinion.
