      Same here, I went with a couple of friends. One of those friends brought his younger brother and when we left the theater we were all blown away and had a serious mind-high. When asking the little brother what he thought he answered "Nothing really happened, it wasn't really exciting" to which our reaction was just standing there looking at him with our mouths open. He didn't get what actually happened and was just too confused to enjoy the movie. 🤣

      Agreed, story time, it actually started to show in cinema just before I moved with my parents to other city, I thought “eh… another shitty movie, I’ll pass” and I did not watch it before the move but after I moved it was in a local cinema and there was a free week for schools and such, we went with a class and holy shit it blew me away, I have seen it again the next day and it was actually first DVD I ever bought. Still love it to this day. Also for some reason my friends could not comprehend the notion of world inside a computer, having watched Tron a million times I had no such issues ;)

    Neo knew the term 'déjà vu
    ' because it is a common phrase that means 'that feeling you sometimes get that you've experienced this exact moment before'. It isn't a term they made up. I love your reactions, your benevolent curiosity, and how emotionally invested you get when experiencing new music and movies.

      @goldenageofdinosaurs7192 Před 2 lety +4

      Right. I’ve known the word since I was probably 6 or 7 years old, though I don’t think I experienced deja vú until my early teens.

    • @ScenecrlyK.S.O.
      @ScenecrlyK.S.O.  Před 2 lety +10

      Yes i know what it means - but I meant the reason - the reason that was familiar to him - the repeated cat appearance was because he was the one. he was supposed to have a familiar experience in the matrix because it was not his first rodeo - You get what i mean. It wasn't a mistake that he saw it - it was meant to be. Because he was the ONE> It shocked the others because only the one would have a deja vu experience - I hope it makes sense.
      It was the reaction - De ja vu is a french word meaning to experience a familiar - prophecy - precognition. I was saying how he knew to describe the prophecy as a Dejavu as opposed to calling it strange. (LOL... i was sucked in at that moment) lol. That's how i interpret it., It wasn't about the word... it was the meaning - the hidden meaning to have had that moment.

    • @TheGroucho66
      @TheGroucho66 Před 2 lety +11

      @@ScenecrlyK.S.O. I sort of get what you mean. Interesting theory and I love how you look into the meaning of these movies. The truth of the matter though is that the deja vu experience isn't specific to the one, but is experienced by everyone. People who haven't been freed and don't know the world is a simulation called the matrix experience deja vu, but dismiss it as just deja vu i.e. a weird experience you sometimes get in life. People who have been freed, know it's a simulation and use the matrix like Morpheus, Trinity, Switch, etc know the true ramifications of these experiences in the matrix and what they mean or imply. What's clever about the idea of the world being a simulation is the directors/writers of the movie have utilised the strange occurrences or feelings we have in real life as examples of faults or flaws in the matrix itself, which makes the idea or world in the movie seem more real and immersive because we, at home, think "wait...I've experienced deja vu too!". lol. Hence why when he said "oh! Deja vu" , they were all very familiar with the idea and what it means (as the audience does too) except they knew that it actually meant in the context of knowing the matrix is a simulation i.e. "it happens when they change something". It shocked/worried them because they suspected the thing that was "changed" was related to them being put into a trap or something, hence why they cocked their guns and started looking around as soon as it was suggested that deja vu occured. This ended up being true as the building's code has been altered such that most of the exits had been closed off (hence Mouse opening up the curtains and finding a bricked wall instead of a window). Therefore, people who have been freed and use the matrix like Morpheus, Trinity, Switch, etc are aware of these signals, like Deja Vu, to tip them off about things in the world to help them stay out of danger. Neo called it Deja vu only because it was exactly that: a moment that felt like it repeated itself. Nothing more. Though you were mistaken here, keep an eye out for these deeper meanings in the later films. Theorising about these movies is so fun :)

    My late Father, who passed in 2002, felt that this was one of the most important movies, ever. I'm glad, I took him to see it.
    His favorite line: "There's a difference between knowing the path, and walking the path."
    He'd say, he "...felt that (he) had pieced together the map, but didn't have faith to walk in the territory."

    To answer your question about the reason for creating the Matrix, I think it was because they needed a way to keep the minds of the humans occupied while they were in the machines' battery farms. The matrix is something like a ongoing dream state, akin to keeping them in a perpetual coma, so that they wouldn't wake up and have to be discarded and they could be kept entirely unaware of what was actually going on in the world and with their bodies. Notice how Neo, when he 'woke' up, was disconnected from the system.

    • @darkrootgarden3530
      @darkrootgarden3530 Před 2 lety +4

      If you'd also like some background on how/why The Matrix came to be, I definitely recommend watching The Animatrix, particularly the segments called The Second Renaissance Part 1 & 2. A lot of people skip it, or just don't know about it entirely, but it helps answer a lot of questions from the first film.

    • @DertBagg
      @DertBagg Před 2 lety +4

      The reason is that the Matrix was designed as a neural network for the machines, then WB said that was too complicated for the audience and told them to change it to batteries.

    • @oTurkish13x
      @oTurkish13x Před 2 lety +3

      @@DertBagg It also makes sense why the Matrix is needed in the first place, if it was just batteries they could have just kept them asleep with no Matrix connection but since their purpose is to make use of their brain processing power then the Matrix existence makes sense being more interactive than a simple dream, keeping their minds active.

    In all the times I've watched this movie I've never wondered how Cypher would know if they keep up their end of the deal if he can't remember anything. Haha, nice! I like when people show me there's some new angle to things that I'm otherwise familiar with. Morpheus said 'the body cannot live without the mind'. Morpheus did not say that if you die in the Matrix you die in real life. I take that to mean that if someone didn't automatically accept their Matrix death then they aren't really dead yet. Since Neo had freed his mind by the time he was shot I think that's why Trinity was able to reach him and bring him back.

    • @gerardcote8391
      @gerardcote8391 Před 2 lety

      There is the theory that you never leave the Matrix, and the people that take the red pill just move to another level of the Matrix, and Neo is assigned by the architect to start the new Zion so he is defended by the program, he can't die he may not even be human, he may be a super agent program. The architect implies this -the first matrix was too perfect so people rejected it, so he rejects the matrix because it is still too perfect so he moves to the dystopian world matrix with a war and poverty, and people trying to survive with bad food, living underground.

In terms of storytelling, cinematography, action scenes, it was the first of its kind in a lot of ways. You almost wouldn't believe it came out over 20 years ago. It still holds its own when compared with a lot of movies made in the last 5 years.

I remember watching this movie for the first time and not understanding it in its entirety, I mean there were some things I picked up on at first and then I had watched it a few times later because I then finally owned a computer, I then began to understand the terminology used in this movie along with the other symbolisms I picked up in the movie. I enjoyed it even more so and the other two that followed after this one! Hugo Weaving does a spectacular job playing the Villan in this film as "Agent Smith" the main antagonist of this movie!
    Keanu Reeves as Neo, Carrie-Ann Moss as Trinity and Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus, I loved these characters and I hope you enjoyed this one enough to see the other two that followed after. Wonderful reaction!! I think you and I are on the same page when it comes to morpheus. In fact I feel more for him than I do for Neo.
    I too felt overwhelming emotion when switch died and it's typically overlooked by fans of the movie. She played a small role but the line "not like this" killed me. When you see it from her point of view, she is on what could be seen as a holy mission to find the one, led by THE most revered and inspirational captains in the fleet of ships tasked with freeing people from the matrix (one of the most honourable roles in their society.) To switch, her life has great purpose now and so she thought her death would also be a worthy one. If we're fighting in a war, we all have romanticism in the way we would like to go out, unfortunately for her it did not end that way.

    It was all a mental thing. When he was in front of the oracle he didn't believe he was The One, and she knew it. So therefor he wasn't The One, yet. She placed everyone where they needed to be with her words. She wasn't lying. She just knew what they needed to hear in order to facilitate Neo to become the one.

    I really like your interpretation of the 'function of the one' , regarding how he is 'incarnated' into a new body. That he 'returned'. You are gonna find the second and third movie very interesting. You are damn smart, really loving your reaction.

    You should check out these films Tron 1982, and Dark City 1998. If you saw those 2 films before seeing The Matrix you would have been prepped for the Matrix.
    All three have very similar schemes, plots, ideas and conclusion, to the point they are basically the same movie each with its own twist.

      @@irabernstein There is also a fairly good theory that Neo isn't the one. The idea that the one is a program not a human and the architect refers to it as an anomaly in the program. That leads to the idea that Agent Smith is the one (the one agent that wants out of the Matrix) or that the little girl (Siri???? I forget) in the train station with her parents is actually the one which is why they are there trying to escape.

It's actually the spiritual journey. Buddhists believe that the material world and our ego's are just a manifestation of our minds. And only through enlightenment (waking up) can we know the true nature of reality.
    There are lots of religious connections to made made too, the holy Trinity, Morpheus God of dreams etc.

    The idea that humans were used as batteries doesn't actually work (you'd need to put more energy in than you could get out) and the Wachowskis knew this - originally humans were being kept for the processing power of their brains (which makes sense). Apparently this did not test well with audiences, so they changed to the battery idea - even though it couldn't work.
