I live in the High Desert, Antelope Valley, CA where the PCT crosses in several places. We have hiked the PCT/John Muir trails of Sierra Nevada. I hope 2024 will be better and you will have a chance to finish the section. Beautiful and majestic landscape. Thank you for sharing your journey.

It’s was great following and meeting you Rumbles, No Filter and Hazel . You really made my day when I came across you all on my way out for my hike in Seiad😃
I always looked forward to getting home at night and watching your latest video!
Being an older hiker(61) you really showed me how to push myself to new heights on my section hikes.
Hazel really did great on that pancake challenge huh !🥾👍

I hope you can come back to the Sierra for a couple of weeks in a year and at a time of year when it doesn't feel like it is trying to kill you. You can get off the JMT/PCT highway and have peaceful solitude. There are places so beautiful, it will make you cry.
There are some lakes that have lots of small trout, and some lakes that have fewer but bigger trout. If you want to catch Golden Trout and don't care about the size, the best place, IMO, is just west of the PCT at the headwaters of the Kern River. The fish have been removed from some lakes, but along the PCT: Sallie Keyes, Heart, and Marie Lakes offer some nice fishing all in a row. Then there's the hotsprings along the Kern, Blaney hot springs across the river from Muir Trail Ranch, and Iva Belle hotsprings; all nice places to stop and soak off the trail dust.

Hi guys! I enjoyed all your videos. I enjoyed the southern and northern California, and Oregon and Washington sections because I got to see country I have never traveled. I enjoyed the Sierra part of your trip because I am intimately familiar with it, from my travels through it on foot, skiis, and horseback. I think it was good you made the serious effort to get through the Sierra, and a smart decision to bail at Bishop Pass. You missed a lot of awesome country, but you'll appreciate it even more if you can experience it in normal backpacking conditions. Well, whatever trails you do choose to travel from here and now, I wish them to be happy! Eric

Donner Pass had 6 inches of snow again on Oct 26. I don’t think the Sierra was void of snow for very long this year! But you definitely would love it without snow. August is usually a good month. Less or no mosquitos and less or no snow!

Lol great job gentleman (I use that term loosely), all that time I thought you had already forgotten me and why you became so popular! 🤪 I have a some questions for you for your Q & A series! Was Marmalade your favorite fellow hiker you hiked with (I think he’s awesome)? More serious questions, the PCT gets the reputation of being the easiest trail. Did you find it to be easy in comparison to the AT, or because of such tough conditions is that what made it so tough? In other words if it had been a mild year do you still think this trail is a good tough test in your mind? What were some of the other areas you liked besides the Sierra? As I told you you were going to love northern Washington. Knifes edge was great when we did it together (my favorite spot of the two months I was on trail this year), how about crater lake? Whitney? I don’t think you’ve done around Tahoe or the desolation wilderness right? Just curious what else you enjoyed? Great job and I really enjoyed hanging with you two boys and Hazel! Cheers Marm-O-lade!

They are predicting another wet winter for us out here in California. But they were predicting a drier winter last year, and we know how that worked out 😂. I recommend doing the Sierra in August and/or September, perhaps even revisiting the areas you already hiked. We put off our Sierra backpacking adventures until late summer this year and most of the snow was melted by then. Creeks were also usually back to being creeks instead of raging rivers. The Sierra is such an amazingly beautiful place (I feel blessed to live just 2 hours from Tahoe). You should definitely visit them when you're not having to hike through 30 feet of snow. Happy Trails!

    2) When you do stream crossings, do you cross in your hiking shoes and just walk in them down the trail or do you use separate shoes for hiking across the stream?

I was fortunate enough to complete the Sierra section on my third attempt, in perfect conditions, finishing in Lake Tahoe on Oct. 16th. It was stunning! After doing all those passes on dirt, I am in awe of what you accomplished. Great job! 👏 I also think that the best sub-text of your hike and videos is the nature of your friendship. As a viewer, the first few notes of music was like a dinner bell for a visual feast of the PCT.. The timing in Socal was perfect with the superblooms in fields of flowers, the Sierra this year was more mountaineering than hiking, I have a greater appreciation of the Cascades.
Hazel was amazing; Skeletor the timely guide through the most difficult climbs. Looking forward to you folks finishing the Sierra...Best to you and your families.

You both were THE team to watch this year on CZcams. You were very deserving of the high number of followers. Looking forward to you finishing up together hopefully next year.
Q&A questions: 1) If Hazel skipped any portion of the trail, might you 3 be able to finish the remaining part together? 2) Exactly what part(s) did you miss - trail miles and close to town locations? 3) What was the friendliest town and the most memorable zero you took and why was it so memorable? 4) What was the one scariest or sketchiest part of the PCT for you? 5) How did you two meet?

First, thanks for sharing your journey with us. It was a wonderful experience to 'experience' it with you guys.
    Here's our questions:
    1. What miles/section do you need to go back for? Somehow we aren't sure of where that was.
    2. How much weight did you lose. Rumbles was looking rather gaunt towards the end. We were concerned.
Also, actually wondering what were your meals were? Did you have a favorite food item that stayed all the way through the hike? Or did you change it up totally at some point?
    3. How much money was accumulated for the Alzheimer cause? We have a personal interest in that charity and thank you for naming it as your cause.
    4. What's Hazel doing now? Did she totally complete the trail?
    5. If you want to share ... how much did the journey cost?
Thanks again and congratulations on a hard trail year that you did with lots of humor. Your videos were appreciated. Gerry and Nanci

I am out on my porch watching with headphones. Weather is mild here in the Sierra Nevada foothills where I live. I hear the wind gusts and start to look around,…it’s coming from you. :) I thoroughly enjoyed every video. I turned 60 2 days ago and my 2023 plan was to hike the John Muir and then the following year the PCT or AT. Muir was scrapped. Will see what 2024 brings. Did a small section though of the AT in May. I live near the PCT and have done many small sections, (other than the desert.) so I hope a thru-hike is still in my future. After visiting, the AT is also intriguing mostly because I loved, loved, loved the people I met out there.

Nice to hear from the Codgers! Thanks for the recap. I do have questions for your upcoming Q&A:
    1. How many miles did you do before you felt like you got your trail legs?
    2. After getting your trail legs, do uphill slogs ever get easier?
    3. How many incidents of mice chewing through your tents did you have, and at which sections of the trail?
    4. What personal settings do you use on your inReach? Do you use tracking? If so, what recording intervals do you set? Or do you only turn it on when you want to send text?
    5. What did you use for trash bags and what did you do with them at night, especially when in the Sierra?

But what a commitment and what an adventure it was! I followed you thru the whole thing and first started watching "Codgers" when you were doing the AT. I also watched your gear review, Joe. I'm also a senior "codger" and I love the outdoors. I do a lot of camping and hiking. In years past, I hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon where it was 120 deg at the bottom. Yikes that was tough, but what an experience! Also biked across Wisconsin, my state. Also a great experience. Hope you two can do more hikes, even if shorter ones. That would be great. You have a following out here, guys! Oh, you mentioned when on the hike that all the proceeds gotten from CZcams contributions would be given to a charity, Can you tell us what charities or causes the proceeds went to when you do your next video? Thanks and Happy Trails!

If you go back and go the sierras that you missed, the area is beautiful snd your wives could enjoy town and Yosemite while you are doing the trail and be your trail angels for rides and resupplies. Mammoth snd bishop are great towns. Yosemite is fantastic. Curry village inside the park has nice and affordable cabins. June lake and Lee vining has some charming spots. Bridgeport is adorable with the ghost town of Bodie. Mono lake is stunning. Lots of things for them to do and see along the trail. And if you get a car, def check out the pretty side of Lassen along highway 89. It’s stunning. You can camp or stay in the cabins in the park. Clean and modern and comfortable primitive cabins. No electricity but nice bed. Privies nearby snd coin showers. Cabins right on the lake. Best views of Lassen. And of course your wives would love Lake Tahoe. Just something to keep in mind. Highway 395 is my fav summer vacation destination. And not crowded.

So great to see you both, I felt like I was catching up with two old friends. It was such a pleasure following your journey this year. Please keep hiking and bringing us along. You sure have inspired me to get out there. Many thanks.

Thanks guys, it was fun following you on your journey via CZcams. I did 500 miles in the Sierras 4 years ago starting in late Aug. You need to see them again but without the snow cover. I’m someone who has backpacked in Colorado for 30 years and I was blown away! As for another trail, definitely do the CT! I just finished the last 100 miles to Durango this summer. Highly recommend it and only 450 miles so like you said, less time away from family. Happy Trails!

Thanks lad's you've kept this old cogger entertained many a mile, question, how did your bodies hold up, when did you achieve optimum fitness did it continue and how were you at the end of the trail. Many thanks Jack. Ps can't remember you with any bear spray?

How did it work out digging cat holes in the snow.? I’m soon to be 73 with back issues but I loved watching your videos. You’re making the most of life. Don’t hang on the couch to long it’s dangerous. You guys were great

We met you guys in Etna last summer at the coffee shop and have followed your PCT hike from start to finish. We are now watching your adventure on the AT. Can you comment on how Hazel is doing? Thanks for the recap, it was great seeing you "live" again.

So glad I came across your journey and was ultimately able to meet you all. Since first discovering your PCT videos I've put a number of miles in on our WA trails and even a few in AZ. Your hike has been an inspiration (and education) for me and clearly many others. I'm looking forward to seeing what might be next and wish you guys the very best on the trails still ahead. -fp

Thanks so much for sharing your journey. I loved watching you everyday. This summer at 62 I did a 12-day trek with my son at Philmont. My training prepared me well. The thing I found most annoying at my age was getting up off the ground. What did you find hardest about being older thru hikers?

    • @hikingwiththecodgers4086
      @hikingwiththecodgers4086  Před 3 měsíci

Thx! I had the opportunity to do Philmont with my boys as well. Great memories. I think the hardest part was the the initial few weeks until we got our ‘trail legs’ . Being able to eat enough calories to match what we were burning was an extremely difficult. Ended up losing 45 lbs.

Good to see you guys! You look so clean 😂
You've got the Foothills Trail pretty close to you as well, it would be a good short one when you're Jonesin' and need a shot 😉

Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us, it was awsome, inspiring and hilarious at times. Feels like you both have become good friends with all of us.
You should come to bonnie Scotland and do some of our shorter trails and do some Nessie hunting and some fishing here.
Take care both of you and regards to all your backstage crews. Look forward to some more ....Amazing Adventures of the Codgers 😂🎉

the lakes in the high Sierra are a dream. you want to be late enough after snow melt for the mosquitos to die off and not be so brutal. So timing can be tough. I love hiking, but my favorite thing to do was to find a favorite lake and hike in and stay for awhile and bag some peaks.

Nice to see you guys again. Thanks for this recap video. If you do decide to hike the Colorado trail I can help if needed. Do you guys have an email address I can write to in case you want to get in touch in future? I probably shouldn't leave my email info in the comments LOL. I'm looking forward to future videos if you do some section hiking 👍

Q&A. Since I plan to hike the trail over five years that allows me to pick the best time of year for each section in terms of weather and avoiding fire . Was there a time when you we are on a five hundred mile section and you said to yourself we nailed this weather wise. Obviously not the Sierras but the desert? NorCal?Oregon? Washington? Just curious and when was that.

    Was there any blowdowns
    Today ?😂😂
Please go finish and go fishing, too. These would make great Videos. After getting out on trail, how much money did you spend, ie. Lodging, food, resupply,
    all total ?
Fastest way to go around blowdowns,
    go straight thru
    or hike around ?
Did you go hike around to find best place for water crossings
    or just go with
what was in front of you ?

I thought this was Trick or Treat ,great to hear from you all again. Can’t wait for your next adventure, what ever it might be . You have to continue so you can find the Best Hamburger 🤣 There was also a big difference this year on the AT and that was the amount of rain in New England states . I know you all will finish the trail at sometime. Happy Trails …….
