The other doctors were putting this girl on a pedestal, but House actually took the time to ask her how she feels and what she wants. He understood that it's okay to be afraid.
He treated her like a person.

Yes and no. She was brave. But he still remembered that brave people are brave because they carry on despite the fear.
Wilson said it himself nearing the end of the series; Cancer patients often are at ease with their terminal diagnosis, their families are the ones that suffer the most with the news. Often, not always.

Very true. My mother passed of cancer. She went through all stages of grief through her last year and at the end she was at peace with it. It was us that were absolutely devastated and couldn't handle it.
Life is hard. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a fool or lying to themselves. For some, it's too hard. But what makes it bearable is our companions on this journey. To lose one is devastating, but for them, it can be a release.

For anyone that wants to know, they end up doing the procedure, they find the clot and remove it. They realize that the clot wasn't near her amygdala and that her bravery wasn't a system, she is just a brave little girl on her own.

House has truly suffered in his life. His pain is severe, but because he’s experienced it he can sympathize with other people who have also suffered.
Basically house should have had his leg amputated would have saved him a lifetime of pain. Taking that muscle out only made the process slow down

I can sympathize with this kid, when I was 15 I was diagnosed with a genetic disorder or as I like to call it a genetic misfire. The doctor said that most people with it never see 35 but I turned 40 last month but it's hard to live with the sword of damicles over your head
Stay strong like you have so far! It's always inspiring to read these kinds of stories, and I am so glad that you managed to beat the odds, no matter how hard it got for you.

I would have been tempted to say, "We're done," and meant it.
People shouldn't involve their emotions in their work, it becomes personal and invites failure.
@@malikguzman9132 that is true but i think as a medical professional you can't expect them to completely shove away their emotions, if a patient is facing death they want to be told directly and have a moment of empathy with whoever is providing for them.

@@coals6262 and Wilson knows House well enough to know he's not _that_ sadistic, to know there's good diagnostic reason House wants to observe her reaction. But Wilson allowed his emotional reaction to House's seemingly insensitive manner to get in the way.
House has never been bad to kids throughout the series.

This is how you prove that House is not a nice person, but he is a good person, and very kind in his own way.
The distinction between "nice" and "kind/good" is one lost on many people, and it is SO important. It takes strength and courage to do the truly kind thing at times, when that thing is not considered "nice" by others.
House represents the classic East Coast mentality of being honest and blunt but not being cruel.

Hugh Laurie's scene talking to this little girl is underrated. It's not this big emotional dramatic scene, but it's nuanced and subtle. HOW _Calmly_ House talks to this girl he's just been observing around the corners, and he talks to her about *_living with pain._*
_"I'm asking if you want this to be over..."_ there is so much *compassion* in his voice and his expression afterward, and yet totally honest and factual.
Because that's the thing about Bravery when it comes to something like this. *_You're brave for OTHER PEOPLE._* But no one asked what the little girl wants. She was being brave for her mother, and House knew it.

No, he isn't. CHILDREN do not have the ability to give consent for a reason, and encouraging her to DIE is a horrific thing to do for ANY patient, and could have, and indeed SHOULD HAVE cost House his medical license!

The consent was already handeled as well, the mother signed the forms. House went to learn what the child wanted out of the situation.

Not everyone gets to actually be a child. That’s reality. This girl was given a choice. Do you want to lay down and die or fight?

If you think end of life discussion for a terminal cancer patient is grounds for termination of registration then there would hardly be a physician left in the US or a great many people undergoing painful, expensive and futile procedures with no hope of useful quality of life.

The situations were different
House cares much more about Wilson than he does about that girl( as he should) and from Houses point of view Wilson was not only choosing to die but abandoning him.

I have chronic pain. This is so true and sad. Lying in tears, wondering if it’s all worth it. You have to have a why, to keep going on.
I still believe House cares for all his patients, but he knows there are tons of people to care for them first. He always talks to a patient when it's a conversation only he can have (usually to solve the case). No one else would ever say 'It's OK to die' to that kid.
Adam Warlock used his friends and allies as chess pieces to win the battle. He couldnt see them as real persons cause then he would care about the trees and lose the forest.
Yeah that's definitely a way of shield himself - tbh he's brave too just in another way.
If my child was in a situation like that is if the child wanted to fight for themselves to get better, not for me to keep me happy or other people. I would want my child to fight for their own hopes and dream and if they have nothing left in them and the pain is just too great for them to let them go beyond pain's reach..
House actually states in one episode, don't remember which one, that the reason he doesn't meet with the paient often is because he can become to attached to them and looses his ability to think objectively about their situation.
He never not care about his patients. He just believes that crying and holding hands isn't what's gonna save them. That's for the family. He believes that getting results saves patients. So he goes to get it even if it means he needs to yell at them, curse at them, do whatever it is that might not look like caring to the outsider.

God, this really hits home and hurts a lot to watch... I am a cancer fighter myself, and I started off in the Pediatric Oncology ward at 16. I can't tell you how haunting it was to hear mothers and fathers sobbing out in the hallways after getting worse news, the sound is engraved in my mind forever.
I understand the girl's pain... the feeling of utter exhaustion, but forcing myself to push on because my mom needs me. She's my best friend and I honestly don't know what I would do without her.
I'm 23 now, my cancer is gone for the most part, but for the last 5 years I have been dealing mainly with the after effects of my treatments. I've had more surgeries than I can count - 3 in this year alone with another 2 already scheduled. 2 years ago I lost my right eye due to my radiation therapy destroying everything good and bad over the 7 years since I last had it.
Despite all of this, I finished high school on time and even graduated with my AA degree at the same time, and this coming May it will have been 1 year since I graduated from university with my 4 year ASL Interpreting degree.
This life might be exhausting, but I know that I can use everything I have gone through, all of my experiences, to try to make the world a better place.
Dude heck you are so amazing and im so glad you are here. You're gonna do a lot of good in your life, even just you sharing your experiences provides strength to others. I seriously hope you are so proud of yourself and i really wish you the best with all further medical procedures

that last sentence. good for you. my brother was a cancer patient. he didn't make it. but before relapsing he told me he wanted to be a pediatric oncologist, he wanted to be part of the team of professionals who helped him. he wanted to help as well. that last sentence reminds me of him.

I know exactly how Andy feels in choosing an almost unbearable life over a reasonably peaceful death because you don’t want to leave your mum, because she needs you. I’ve been in, and still am in that position. House shows the kind of empathy someone in such a position really needs in his interaction with Andy.

Imma be honest, I don’t think my parents really need me, it’s more the other way around. If I die that’s a bit of extra money to them, that seems like a win.
@@bunsenn5064 from a purely pragmatic viewpoint they would be better off. Emotionally though, not so much. Assuming the parent actually cared about and loved the child, it would be an emotional scar that would never heal.
The mom in this episode is clearly devastated by the news, to the point she cried on her kid’s chest. She needed her kid, and likely suffered the loss until she herself died.

Her selfless love is the source of her bravery
many times in history, some of the bravest people were brave because it meant protecting the ones they love, and some of the bravest acts in history are done out of love. Crazy how powerful love is, and how brave it can make us.

Im glad they gave it the emotion it deserved. At first I thought Wilson was just going to scoff and it would be a "oh that quirky Dr. House" moment. But what he said, regardless of his motivations, was really messed up.
I agree with house about giving people a pedestal, like they are heroes. The problem by doing that is the people with cancer is force to be something they are not (brave, happy and strong) they can not show any other emotion. I had a friend who died at 18 years old by cancer =, not only everyone told her she was brave, she was told it was a test from god and she should be grateful and that's was she did, even after chemotherapy she show happiness and never complain. One night, a month before her dead) I was at her house helping her brothers and mom do some decorations for a kid's birthday, that night she blew up, she did not hold back any emotion, at that point she have had enough she was mad at everyone and everything for the first time she show how sad and angry she was, because she knew she was going to die. I'm glad she could do that at least one time before she died.
I don't blame her, to be told that this is a test from God and that she should be grateful about it is a disgusting thing to tell someone and I come from a Christian household. Im very sorry for your loss. Hopefully they apologized for telling her that before she passed.
The way House interacts with kids is pretty remarkable. He speaks to them as he would with anybody, but doesn't treat them like idiots because he knows they're innocent and at the mercy of the adults raising them- maybe still sarcastic and inappropriate at times, but never cruel or condescending the way he is with adults 😂😂
Everyone talks about how unempathetic House is but really he can show incredible empathy. No one mentions it.

Reminds me of something Johnny Depp said during an interview, about the time he spent in a hospital, while his daughter was a patient there. And he was seeing all the other parents there with their dying children. And he said:
"The kids, bless them, they're so courageous... But the parents are the ones that are slowly dying."

The "Go to hell" From wilson shows a side of him you don't usually see. For him, house crossed a line and it would be difficult to see house's point even given the background they have. It was a very convincing expression.

@@bidishasarker9554 True, True ... I watched Hugh Laurie on a talk show once and was most surprised he did not limp. The accent of course is jolting but my brain objected to the missing limp.
House is a great show even if it's a bit made up.
One of the underrated moments in the scene is when House's medical team is bringing the little girl back to life by injecting her blood into back her and looking for the blood clot. The staff is observing and Dr. Foreman is the only one that sees the clot for a split second. Knowing the consequences, House asks Foreman for confirmation and then says "That's good enough for me", acknowledging in his mind that Foreman is my guy and I trust him with this little girl's life.
1:50 House absolutely came off as bitter and out of touch when he said this but honestly I absolutely don't think that's what he intended. He believes bravery is overrated when you're literally dying and about to quite literally lose everything. That's a true opportunity to be vulnerable. He wants to let that kid have that and I think he believes it's wrong for them to keep forcing this kid to put on their brave act by encouraging it with praise...

You know, as someone that had cancer as a child, twice in fact due to it mutating after the first treatment, I wish I had more people around me that were like House than a bunch of people all thinking I was so brave and strong simply because of something I had literally no control over. I didn't choose to go through cancer or the treatments, and I was too young to really grasp what was going on. I just went through the motions. As far as I was concerned, it was all normal to me. Bravery wasn't even a factor.

Am I the only one that thinks that House has shown some of the most human emotions throughout this entire show out of the whole crew? In a twisted way he's been the most humane.
This is one of the most powerful scenes in the show's history. Funnily enough, one of the season's episode titles is Occam's Razor (the simplest theory when compared with competing theories is usually the correct one) - I really think House became a doctor because not only are people the greatest puzzles of all, he does also care about people in general. He obviously values some possessions in his life and has varied interests, so he would need some kind of reasonable earnings. For a guy with an IQ north of 150 he could have become a research scientist, a startup co-founder, etc etc. Yet, he still chose to be a medical doctor, so if he doesn't care about people at all, he could have avoided doing diagnostic medicine on them, by not becoming an MD.

A lot of cancer patients end up exactly in this girl's position. They end up forced to put on a brave face and be the one to comfort their families, all the while they are forced to pretend they aren't terrified and exhausted

Sasha Pieterse is such a great actress. She nailed this role.
Scenes like this is why no TV show will ever compete with House MD... the acting, lines, camera work, music is all flawless.... GOD i miss this tv show....
I agree it’s an amazing show, but in it’s own right. With that said, there are a plethora of other equally amazing shows out there, some from before House was aired, some during the same time, and some long after the show has ended. 🙂

I absolutely love that despite being Americans, Wilson uses degrees Celsius and liters in his explanation and the mom doesn't freak out while hearing the valuue "21" and even correctly estimates that 2 liters is approximately half of her daughter's total blood volume.
Most Americans have more exposure to the metric system and the Celsius scale than you might think. We’re all taught metric in school, and many of us use the metric system in our jobs and daily lives.
@@fencius What would be roughly the percentage of general population using it according to your estimation? Excluding NASA employees and top scientists who of course use it by default. I of course understand that it differs by profession (builders and doctors come to mind), but how about geographically? Does it differ significantly in different US states?
Most likely due to how often she had to take her child to the hospital. I imagine metric measurements were thrown at her constantly.........or cuz you know, its a show but thats not as fun of a reason
@@CzechMirco Most food and medical information is in metric. I would say all Americans can visualize volumes like liters since there's 4 liters in a gallon, and we're all very familiar with gallons.
@@foreverinafantasy To be honest I don't know about that. I grew up with the metric system despite being American, because both of my parents are science teachers. Although the majority of the people I know have little to no knowledge of it, they understand the basis of it but could never functionally use it unless they studied more about it. The American school system does teach it, but education and standards are different from state to state, and school to school even in those states. Especially if they are poor or rural schools
That last scene is so well acted.
I think this selflessness is what inspired House in the finale episode.
They both risked their entire lives and their futures for the one they loved.
This hits even more to home now. Im 35 and have stage 4 colon cancer, we found it too late, and their isn't anything to do to save me since it spread too much in the small intestines. They say i have 12-18 months left... obviously it could be less or more depending on how fast the cancer grows from here. Their are times that i'm accepting my fate and their are times that i just break down. I try to be brave cuz their isn't anything i can do so why cause myself more distress but emotion is a tricky thing, you can try to suppress it but it will keep clawing and clawing until it comes out of you. It makes it harder being so young, like if i was 70 then it would be easier to accept it so being this kids age in the video would be .... unimaginable on how hard it would be to accept it.
I’m very sorry about your illness. And im sorry that you have to face the ups and downs that come with this. I don’t know you, but I sincerely hope that what time you have even with this insidious disease will be the best moments of your life, that you will be surrounded by people that love you, and you will have peace :(

Very sorry to read about your prognosis. I hope you are not in too much pain, and have people around you who love and support you. Both my parents passed during the last few years, my mother didn't want to go but made peace with it, I think. My father was bored with life and wanted to see what comes next. Either way, we all have the same ending. I still feel them both around sometimes. My thoughts are with you.
@@SezArrow thanks, I'm not in too much pain, besides back pain here and there and maybe neck pain but that is cuz of the way I'm sleeping cuz of the ostomy bag on me. I think i'm more afraid of the possible pain that i might endure when it comes closer to my time as it spreads even more. If i pass away peacefully in my sleep then that would be the perfect way for me, I don't want to go kicking and screaming in pain or see it coming.

House will do anything in his power to have someone not die on his watch, especially a child. This is one of my favorite episodes and even the ones that make me cry the most.

I will never stop watching House reruns. His character seemed so complicated at times, but when you really think about it he was actually so simply to figure out. His compassion was hidden behind a wall of sarcasm and tell like it like it is facade. The character truly cared and would do anything to keep people from pain and suffering.
That little girl actress was excellent. She should have gotten an Emmy Award for her role in this episode. She was perfect.

My heart goes out to this young girl. It reminds me of the children in this world are suffering with cancer and shouldn't have to go through cancer at such a young age. Cancer overall sucks at any age. I was supposed to be going back to school to start my scrub tech/scrub nurse degree this year but I got cancer and plans got shut down for now. Cancer usually isn't a fast death, it can be very slow. I kinda associate it with Alzheimer's in a way but most cancers can be cured while Alzheimer's can't be cured. I don't know exactly what kind she has. But it has to be a really serious one if it's causing her to die fast. I need to get all of the seasons on here so I can what the full episode of this one cuz I am sucked into this.

From memory I think it was metastatic glioblastoma or glioma - one of the popular kid cancers anyway. Its also her age, as soon as she hits puberty (assuming it's hormone reactive, it'll climb out like an F22 on reheat). Child cancer survival and recurrence/metastasis rates are bad because of this.
I'm on cancers 5,6,7 at the moment.
When I had cancer as a kid everyone put me on a pedestal too. As soon as I was done with treatment all that admiration rapidly faded and I had to figure out who I was beyond simply “the brave survivor”, “old soul” and “hero” that people labeled me as. All that praise left me with no identity beyond the disease and I am still recovering from that collapse of my identity 20 years later. For survivors, the treatment often takes much longer to recover from than the cancer itself.
Sounds like you got PTSD from surviving the cancer. Like you're fighting your own war, just like a hero would be.

Man oh man, one of my most favorite episodes.
There was this oriental family in hospital, because the daughter needed a kidney transplant. The brother was a match, so with broken English the doctors tried to explain the procedure. He agreed, but as they were prepping him, tears silently fell from his cheeks, even though he did not say a word. The doctors wanted to be sure he understood everything, so they got an interpreter in, to explain everything again to the brother. Turns out he thought he would have to die, so his organs could be used to save his sister. He was willing to give up his life to save his sister, but he was a little sad because he had to die, hence the tears. He was obviously very relieved when he was told he would not die. Now that was a brave little boy.
No. That was crappy doctors, illegal and malpractice lawsuits lining up like B17G10 lining up on the hardstanding for a raid on Schweinfurt. Unbelievably I've actually seen worse than this.
If he can't understand then you get a translator. If he thought he had to die there's a possibility he would have died on the table just from the thought. Not to mention there's zero consent if he can't even understand a quarter of what he's being told.
In Vietnam a newb shot in the abdomen (no major organs or blood vessels damaged) would live for about 20 minutes. After being in combat for a year the same guy with the same wound would survive for multiple days/weeks.. Just because he's seen others survive. They didn't die because of medical reasons - they died because in their experience that wound is fatal. They thought themselves to death.

Autopsy, flat out my favorite episode in the series, IMO the best medical TV series ever. House finally found true bravery in this 9 yr. old. Fine acting all around plus an excellent script.

Years ago, I had surgery done. My mom got me a box set of every season of House for me to watch while in recovery. Binged the whole thing over 2 or 3 weeks. And yet, somehow, I'm still finding clips of episodes I don't recognize at all.
I still don't know why this show had been canceled that badly. No cuddy, no 13, and no Cameron.. I miss this show.

@@dandlion589 It was concluded on their terms but there was a clear deadline for the show given by the network, ratings were falling since Season 4 and it was only a matter of time until Fox pulled the plug. They ended more gracefully than a lot of other shows did.
@@every116 That's what you get when you dismantle the iconic trio that was House's team. Biggest mistake they ever made and that's when the show went downhill for me too. Replaced them with boring, nuts and overly conceited characters. Imbecile director.

I was born disabled and chronically ill. I was always comforting my family but looking back I realize I didn’t fully understand the extent of my situation I’m technically terminal but it’s a slow process. I have COPD and respiratory failure. I will most likely have a shorter life span and unless I have some sort of freak accident like a car crash or something my death will probably be slow and painful ( unfortunately when you have a chronic illness you are plagued with thoughts of how you might die and how to prepare for it) now I have a better understanding I’m much more afraid and I comfort my family less and ask them for more comfort. It’s scary. I was used to the pain and all the other stuff growing up I didn’t know any different then idk one day something just clicked in my brain and I understood the gravity of everything and I was terrified. I didn’t want to be strong anymore. I wanted to be allowed to cry and be angry etc. I’m 30 now I’m still sad but it’s not as palpable as it was when it first clicked at like 20.

My dad died of cancer, and while he was upset by it at first, he was a lot more calm and simply wanting to pass on by the end. I have a higher chance to have cancer due to him having it, and I've had dreams where I get diagnosed with cancer. Every time I dream, the part that upsets me the most is the thoughts on how devastated my wife and family would be. In the end, my pain will eventually go away, but theirs will last a lot longer, and that hurts me on a different level.
Those last lines by the girl really resonated with me
Once again I'm blown away by the acting in this show.
