Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge - Comparing Basic Infantry

  • Basic infantry may not seem to have anything interesting to show as anyone would expect Conscripts being the weakest by all terms. However, as those comparisons show each unit has its strong points.
    Conscripts cost 100 resources and are the cheapest unit in the entire game. They are not very good in damage but as it seems they can survive against defensive structures much much better that the other two.
    GIs cost 200 resources and can cause a lot of damage when deployed. They seem to deal the highest damage when deployed and when promoted they can really wreak chaos.
    Initiates are also very strong and come at the same price as GIs. They have a short range but their damage is quite strong against all types. Needless, to say they are extremely overpowered when garrisoned inside a building. They can literally destroy anything in seconds.

  • @dracmeister
    @dracmeister Před 6 lety +141

    There's a good reason why Conscripts can tank damage like that, and it's not because they have more health, it's because of armor types. Out of all the basic infantry, only the conscript has a weird armor type. Armor type is defined as the set of data dedicated to kinds of damage is effective to the unit the armor type is applied to. Their armor type "FLAK" as the internal name for it.
    Reason why they cannot survive an elite GI is simply boils down to their firing rate and damage.
    Initiates have the smallest range (3) but the type of damage they deal is effective to all ground targets. An Elite deployed GI has 7 range, which out-ranges any main battle tank.
    This gives conscripts have a lot of value towards drawing fire or tanking shots for your other units. A continuous flow of conscripts is actually pretty threatening. You can the same strategy as a rush with Yuri Initiates, just make sure you don't go broke, they're quite potent against anyone who's just set up their barracks and before static defenses come in to play.

    • @ReapingRose115
      @ReapingRose115 Před 5 lety +13

      And the strategy for GIs is more for sending them in, deploy and if they're not dead, or just simply in extremely large numbers, it's... Gonna be ugly to whomever is on the receiving end of their lead. Add a few Guardian GI's and a simple infantry rush tactic can be viable for the Allied forces, but it's harsh on the wallet.
      In general, GIs tend to win most man to man Skirmishes against other basic Infantry when they're on the defensive. Unless you're playing the United States, you're probably spending the dosh elsewhere.

  • @AceNeyros
    @AceNeyros Před 6 lety +53

    Never knew that deployed GIs can scrap vehicles quicker than any other basic infantry - I was placing my money on Initiates. Also I'm suprised that Conscripts could survive one Prism hit while others were one-shotted... In terms of viability, it goes something like this.
    Rural maps.
    1. Initiate/GI tied. GI for the range and damage, initiates for the mobility and damage.
    3. Conscript.
    Urban maps.
    1. Initiate. Receives a hefty force multiplier upon garrison.
    2. Conscript. Can be churned out faster than GIs due to cheaper power plant and lower cost.
    3. GI. Slightly stronger than conscript individually, harder to mass produce.
    1. Guardian GI. Great anti-tank and anti-air unit. Don't use them against Rocketeers though.
    2. Brute. Used mainly as scouts that are immune to dogs.
    3. Tesla Trooper. Pretty much unviable.
    1. Yuri prime. Very versatile. Can solo an unprotected base. Cloning vats enables Yuri to produce 2 of him.
    2. Boris. Good against infantry and vehicles, and destroys buildings safely.
    3. Tanya. Slightly better than Boris against infantry, but that's it.

  • @NeilRoy
    @NeilRoy Před 6 lety +104

    I always preferred Yuri's infantry. On the whole, they are superior, as they can be more mobile, don't need to deploy to do more damage and you can produce two of them at a time with a cloning vat, giving twice as many. I find they do exceptional against tanks when bunkered in a structure.
    I found it interesting that the allied infantry didn't have extra protection when they were deployed with their sandbags, you would think that would give them more, but instead it helps them do more damage?? I'm not sure about that logic.
    The soviet units seem to be the weakest, so I assume (I can't recall offhand) they are the cheapest? A good test might be, given 500 credits, how many units could each faction produce under optimal circumstances, then compare damage of those numbers. Seems to me that the same number is not a fair test when each faction's cost may vary and could potentially produce more which would change things.

      Being promoted to Elite changes a unit's weapontype from their default version to a more powerful one, which may also affect their matchup against other unit types, since some of the Elite versions of weapons use different warhead types.
      Being promoted from None to Veteran and Veteran to Elite also gives certain units more strength (HP), speed, sight range, health regeneration, etc.
      While sandbagged, an Elite GI's weapontype changes to one with higher damage per second and much longer range (M60E), however, since they're sandbagged they lose their ability to crawl, which means consecutive attacks by enemies will continue to deal full damage to them.
      That way the Elite GI that was able to crawl "outlived" the sandbagged Elite GI's attacks by means of a 50% damage reduction following the first shot he received.
      Of course this being just a pure damage test, in a live environment the sandbagged GI will probably win before the nonsandbagged GI can even get close enough to use his weapon.
      Little fun fact, an Elite GI's sandbagged weapon *can actually just barely outrange a Tesla Coil* that isn't overcharged.

  • @Kohchu
    @Kohchu Před rokem +1

    There's no denying the GIs are the best general infantry of the bunch. When undeployed, they are comparable to Conscripts with less HP, but when deployed, they become one of the most powerful, and inexpensive units for base destruction in the game. It's honestly kind of disgusting how a unit that costs 200$ normally can absolutely ravage a base by themselves. Especially when you remember the American Special unit is just dropping these anywhere, and you can get more if you can capture a Tech Airport. They maybe easy to kill, but you're going to lose a building or two if you weren't already prepared for it.
    Conscripts meanwhile operate on the logic of 'if 1 doesn't work, send more.' Since the Conscript is super inexpensive, and decently survivable due to their superior armor; sending large bursts of them can actually get good results. Since they dish out acceptable damage, and often will take out a structure or two before they go down, as long as there isn't a hard Anti-Infantry like a Desolator in the way.
    Yuri meanwhile has the most expensive, but most powerful infantry, with the downside being range. Unlike the others, Initiates actually favor well against any enemy (Infantry, Tank, Naval, Building), but; to keep them balanced, their range is abysmal and it's easy to zone them out. Of course, none of this applies if you garrison them into buildings, basically forcing the use of an artillery unit to get them out.

  • @ThelagKingStrikes
    @ThelagKingStrikes Před 5 lety +1

    So TL;DR Conscript has most survivability due to its armor type, but has poor fire rate and damage (making them good for drawing enemy fire away from important units). GIs are middle of the road standard infantry when undeployed, but have the best range and damage for standard infantry when deployed (making them great for holding choke points). Initiates have high dps, but low hp and range (this makes them good in urban environments where they can engage in CQC).

    @ReapingRose115 Před 5 lety +1

    It makes sense that Yuri's Initiates are pretty powerful. The most damaging against infantry, and garrisoned, their firerate makes them extremely dangerous. And Conscripts are... Cheap. That's about it really.
    The biggest downfall however is the short range. They have slightly less range than undeployed GIs, which means that if they were first to make a charge against deployed GIs, even a large squad of Inititates will suffer major casualties. Conscripts may not be as powerful as their counterparts, but for the price of one, you get two Conscripts. They also train faster, and gain promotions faster (not that it's a huge game changer)
    GI's are great all rounders, but require deploying to do damage. However, if they're swarming, the damage they can do is pretty hefty if they're able to get close to the base with inadequate defence, and will decimate it faster, where as the Initiates will struggle slightly vs buildings. Conscripts however can just swarm and continue to swarm in numbers.
    Personally, GIs are my goto basic infantry. Superior capabilities vs Buildings and Vehicles when not garrisoned and range, they can even outrange basic pillboxes/sentry guns.

    You can test their range also, it is important.
    Something else worth mentioning is that when getting hit, soldiers increase their firing rate. It would be nice if you do a video on that, let them attack something while being hit and compare the same thing without being hit. And I think getting hit by a conscript makes better effect than getting hit by tanks because it gives continuous flow without much damage.
    Testing that on Boris attacking tank and attacked by conscript would show a clear result because Boris could survive a fair amount of time. Or maybe how much infantry could Tanya kill while being attacked compared to while not being attacked.

I came into the video expecting deployed GIs to ace this, especially on a numerically equivalent basis (after all, Conscripts are obviously designed to be massed). I was disappointed. I guess especially when elite, deployed GIs can deal enough damage to other units before they come in range to counter the GIs (something not demonstrated in the video), but even then my faith in them has been a bit rattled. I used to be big on using deployed and garrisoned GIs.

    • @RedShocktrooperRST
      @RedShocktrooperRST Před 6 lety +1

      Well it's to do with how suppression (if such a thing can be called suppression) works in RA2: You notice when infantry takes fire, they go prone? This halves incoming damage, but deployed GIs don't go prone and as such still take the full brunt of damage. Granted, for equal resource values (if we want to go from being tg to Spirit of the Law) deployed GIs have more raw damage and I think longer range than conscripts.
