Red Alert 2: Yuris' Revenge - Comparing Anti-Air Units #2

  • In the first video of comparing the Anti-Air units there were quite a few things that were left out. Many members also complained about not using Flak Tracks against multiple targets.
    In this video I tried not only to include those things but also a few suggestions from the members and a few more new things that I found out.
    So, in the first test you will notice the Flak Tracks bringing down Kirovs at a completely different time. This happens because Flak Tracks deal more damage when they are closer to the target. A very useful tip to keep in mind.
    In the next test, I tried to see how much damage a Flak Track deals against a group of Kirovs. In order for the Flak Track to hit multiple targets and deal a decent amount of damage to all of them the units have to be extremely close. When I tried to position the Kirovs at the exactly same spot the Kirovs ( and in that case any unit) start moving to a "free" location. That means you can never have hordes of units at the exactly same hex when they are idle. However, when the units are moving or attacking they can remain at the exactly same spot so this is why in the video I had to force Kirovs to attack so that all of them remain in the same position so that the Flak can benefit from its Splash damage and get a better conclusion.
    The last part was a request from a player so don't bother trying to understand what's going on.

    Let me get this straight: The veterancy of the battle fortress does not affect the damage/firing rate of the units inside, that is determined by the veterancy of the units inside. The veterancy of the IFV does affect the damage/firing rate of the unit inside. We saw this with a sniper IFV.

      This 'cause of Rules code: there's difference betweed an OpenTopped transport like the Battle Fort (which gets new weapons *added*) and the IFV (whose weapon is *replaced*).
      You could achieve a 'fast Battle Fort for one man' by setting Gunner=no (and a bunch of other flags) and set OpenTopped=yes.
      Then you have an IFV whose rocket/missile weapon can be fired along with the infantry's inside.

      I recently discovered, that chrono legionaires gain promotion inside battle fortress. It is weird, since other units do not.

      I think it's 'cause the BFRT kills the enemy before the passengers shooting from inside do.
      The BFRT is basically "stealing" their kill.
      Promotion works fine in buildings, and it makes no sense if one infantry type gets promoted, but not the others.
      Again, unless the BFRT itself steals the kill of the troops inside (which can also happen by crushing).

      @@Pharisaeus Its not shooting speed. Its accuracy. Same principle as a machine gun bullets being more dispersed the longer the distance due to recoil.

    Flak's splash damage are only useful against light-armored targets (i.e. Allied aircrafts and rocketeers)

      All air units except infantry (Rocketeers, since they are infantry and not vehicles) have "Light" vehicle armor, and take the same damage from anti-air.

      Seems more like it's attributed to the fact that the Gattling Tank shot first. I guess if we compared exact time to kill it might be more similar.

      Gattling Tank and Gattling Cannon use the exact same weapon under the game's files. They deal the exact same DPS.

      The Gattling Tank is the best anti-air unit in the game, tied with the Flak Track. Gattling Cannon however, is less impressive than its Allied and Soviet counterparts in the anti-air department. However, Gattling Cannons can also attack ground and Tank Bunkers>turrets.

      Allies AA is good against though targets like Kirov.
      Soviet is better against grouped targets like Rocketeers and Harriers.
      Yuri is in between.

      We literally never said anything about changing any game mechanics, we just said to upgrade the graphics, not a remastered version of it.
      Plus, you can't even call Ra3 a remastered version, it's low-key a downgrade to the franchise.

    That tank bunker info was nice, never knew their RoF or damage increased with almost 100 %. Tank bunker + gattling tank also cost the same as a gattling turret, so maybe it's beneficial to have the tank bunkers then, also they don't need power. Only weaknesses however is mind-control and air units can pop them.

    For the IFV to be at par with the Flak Trak and Gatling Tank a Guardian GI needs to be inside it to make it the same as a Flak Track and Gatling Tank or it's naval equivalent Aegis Cruiser.

    I once did turn off the homing property (straight cannon ball trick) of gattling cannon and oh boy!
    Realistic and very inefficient AA against fast moving aircraft but gosh darn satisfy in term of taking down kirov airship.

    Yuri's Revenge is a game of hidden meanings and connotations. From this video we can see that Yuri's gattling tanks take the least time to destroy Kirov airships, followed by soviet flack tracks and the allied IFVs are the slowest. Yuri is a common Russian given name for men, but it's also a common given name for Korean and Japanese women. I think this setting in the game reflects the fact that East Asian women are the most desirable and they generally take the least time to win over American men's heart, followed by Russian and Eastern European women, and American women are the least desirable. Seems pretty accurate, at least according to my observations.

    I like the comparison of RA2 and Yuri's Revenge. I always thought Gatling weapons were OP in games, but then I think of a CIWS or Goalkeeper and remember what they can do.

      It's showing that even though the Gattling Tank and IFV are both Veterans, the Flak Track still really outperforms the IFV due to the splash damage and is pretty comparable to the Gattling Tank.

      Technically, they did use autocannons like the Shilka in conjunction with their SAMs for low-flying aircraft.

    Heard there's a mistake in flak trooper's elite stats, where what's supposed to be 20 was mistaken as 2, so the elite flakmen just deal 2*2 aa damage per salvo

      Every unit is tied to specific scenarios that could happen and let their strength shine. They seem useless to you, but they're just very situational. For example, I never found any reason to use crazy ivans nor terrorists unless I get access to allied units, but I'm sure they can come in handy. While demotruck is far more powerful, you can get suicide flak tracks early and with less cost. I could say that there are units for every commander's playstyle and strategy.
      However, I do partially agree that there could be some issues in balancing, especially core game. Yuri's Revenge did some balancing, but included new faction that could also have issues. Good thing we have a very dedicated community mods such as Mental Omega, that just recently updated and rebalanced bunch of units.

      @Bat Orgil I gave example of it, it was to destroy a vital building only. A well defended base can negate any attempts of suicide bombing, especially Allied with their quick aircraft. And its a costly tactic too, making basic units is better option unless an opportunity rises for suicide unit strat. Therefore, when its not viable in every scenario, its situational.

      ​@Bat Orgil Considering soviets have two bonus units (when picking country) that are suiciders as well, I suppose you are right that its indeed somewhat viable and common soviet strat. However, by the time you can train crazy ivans, allied can advance to own radar and build harriers.

    the kirov in 1:00 when is attacked by flak truck , despite of it by patriot missiles , you can see 3 kiroves will lose health at the same time .

    I had no idea flak weapons at longer range had reduced effectiveness. Do you think it's from inaccuracy or just programed reduced damage?

    0:00 - 0:48 Use of more Flak Tracks / Troopers will really midigate this. So if you only have a few Flak's, this would be better to do but if you have a lot of them it's really not so bad and it would be advisable to not be so close so your Flaks don't take damage from the Kirov crashing into the ground.

      Or, to look at it from another perspective, put them ALL underneath the Kirov and shred it even faster. Acceptable casualty levels.

    I hate that when I play allies I can't protect myself against a mass rocketeer suicide \attack. They will always manage to take down the battle lab and perhaps the MCV. Without splash damage I'm too vulnerable.

      You're right, although with this messy splash damage, the accuracy is somewhat unnecessary. However nothing can topple the gatlings of the Yuri, that shit is unbalanced and overpoweret as hell.

      The idiot uploader thought that the issue with the first video was splash damage of flaks not being effective against groups but he failed to see that Allied Air Forces aren't as tanky as Kirovs. 🤦‍♂️
      In other words, he should have used Rocketeers/Harriers to serve as targets for the Soviet Anti Air units in order to determine their effectiveness
