    Love this book. There is an innocence about it, however, I got tickled by your use of the fiery flowers behind the school mistress. She takes on a devilish demeanor with those red angel wings.😉😉😉
    I love how you distress the wires of your images. Unless they have been mounted/printed on thin cardstock, which I doubt as you indicate they are indeed originals, they have such dimension and depth. Just love that so much. Your peacock spread is glorious! I'm a suckered for peacock colors. Do your books come with very few pages or do you surgically remove them to give you the space you need? The volumes always seem to carry the proper weight for the bindings and covers. Oh how I would love to spend a week in your studio! I can just see the plumes of smoke rising above your head as the creativity burns plans in your mind!❤

      @BookandPaperArts  Před 3 lety +1

      @@CatherineSunnysideJournals Well, well, I have been asked so many times that I see what my next video needs to be about! The short answer is I use an acrylic gel medium (medium or heavy body) instead of PVA. It has less liquid, so less buckling. I use a brush to paint it on then use a bone folder or other flat thing to flatten the pages and THEN when I have glued three or four (max) I layer with greaseproof (wax or parchment) paper and weight it beneath my book press or a pile of heavy books. Give me a week and I will show this in a video, okay? And let me know if you have more questions, Catherine. I am happy to share ideas forward. 😁🌞😍😉

    I could watch your flip throughs all day long.. just love your creative eye! One day I'll try this. Where do you get such large tea bags? Also wondering if you put an element over both pages, doesn't it crack in the middle over the binding?

    • @BookandPaperArts
      @BookandPaperArts  Před 3 lety +1

      Hello there. Thank you for your kind words; you have made my day! I drink loose tea and buy empty tea bags that you fill yourself and pop into the teapot. They may have them in a whole foods kind of store. I buy mine online and they come in different sizes. As for gluing papers across the binding, that is just a judgement call - sometimes you do and sometimes you don't. You have to let the binding "dictate" that to you. If the binding is already not fitting well, then it will probably crack, so I examine all my bindings before I begin laying out and decide which ones can take the extra weight. I have several videos about prepping and making altered books and I kind of talk about it in some of them. Welcome!

      Hi Cara, I always use originals in my altered books. I also keep an art journal and it's looser and there I sometimes use printed pieces. If you see my latest video it shows how I gather some of the original images. I also have started making my originals available as printables for sale on Etsy and some for free on my site, if you want to check any of those out. Can you tell me how many pages do you glue together for each section, and what type of glue you use?

    • @BookandPaperArts
      @BookandPaperArts  Před rokem +1

      Hi Cynthia, See previous answer to comment for adhesive of choice. The number of pages per section kind of depends on the book, the thickness of paper and state of the spine/binding but as a rule I put about four to six pages per section. If it is too thick it wants to pull the spine apart. Figuring this part out, the preparation, is the trickiest part and while I can (and am happy to) advise, trial and error is your best teacher. Keep me posted and let me know how it goes! Kelly

    I'm watching this on the last day of November 2021 and am thinking about all the stuff I have accumulated over the years--calendar pages, book catalogues, images of paintings--now I know why I've kept it all. The stories I'm going to tell! But the real reason I'm commenting is---how can you say that John Ruskin was "a terrible person" and then not tell us any more--not fair! Am off to google-land.

    • @BookandPaperArts
      @BookandPaperArts  Před 2 lety +1

      Hahahaha. Hello and welcome, Kitty. You are not the first person to say something similar about Ruskin. It's like this - I have a fear of being a know-it-all and going off-topic in my videos but clearly I should have followed that trail. Maybe I can make mid-week videos with more storytelling. (He was a right b*stard to his wife who was still a virgin after eight, miserable years of marriage. Thankfully she was able to escape.) As for altered books, they are an amazing way of using all that for beautiful and fun pages and layouts. I also have some art journal process pages that use up pieces from the image library that might give you some ideas. Keep me posted and let me know how it goes! Kellyl

    Okay, the spread where the reclining lady is laughing at the man with his head in his hands? His long coatish garment suggests a cassock. The angle of his head no doubt hides a dog collar. The poor priest was invited to dinner by the woman and her oblivious husband, who’s been sent to fetch her shawl. Whereupon the licentious lady demands the captive cleric hear her confession. She’s cuckolding her husband! But enthralled by her own daring, she can’t stop laughing. What is the priest to do? Can he in all good faith absolve a sinner who laughs as she confesses? And when will the first course be served?
