  • In this video we will cover what happens to your body during an atomic blast, how you can best protect yourself and we will cover radiation poisoning.
What happens during an atomic blast?
Depending on the yield of the bomb it will produce a fireball of a few hunderd meters up to several KMs. Surrounding the fireball-region there will be an area 2-3x it’s size, with a immensely powerful shockwave and fast winds reaching speeds of almost 1000km/h. Even worse are the collapsing buildings and all the debris flying like bullets around you.
Moving even further away, lets say several km’s, from ground zero and you come in an area where the shockwave lost some of its power and is less severe. It is important to mention that the Thermal radiation, or in other words the temperature in this area can still be very dangerous.
Unfortunately a nuclear bomb is more than a big explosion and a shockwave. About 5% is its energy is released as Ionizing radiation, which consists out of neutrons, gamma rays, alpha particles and electrons.
As you might expect the levels of ionizing radiation are highest around ground zero and than quickly decreases with distance. However levels remain dangerously high for the first few kilometers. This is partly caused by all the radioactive dust and debris in the iconic nuclear mushroom cloud. As all this dust cools, it slowly falls to the ground. In this area 50-90% of people will die from radiation poisoning with hours to weeks.
    Radiation poisoning:
Also called Acute radiation syndrome, classically has 3, forms.
    - With low exposure to radiation someone might develop the Hematopoietic form: it leads to a drop in blood cells and platelets. This causes poor wound healing and increase your chances for infections.
    - The next form is: the gastrointestinal form, which may include symptoms like nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and abdominal pain. People with these symptoms have been exposed to potentially fatal amounts of radiation.
-The last form is the neurovascular form, it causes symptoms like dizziness, headache, or decreased level of consciousness, occurring within minutes to a few hours are exposure to high levels of radiation. Unfortunately this is almost always fatal.
How to remain as safe as possible?
    - The best advice always is to hide behind a barrier as soon if you get an alert message or if you notice the nuclear flash. Because soon after the flash, follows the shockwave.
    - For the shockwave it is often best to find shelter behind or in something structurally sound. This prevent the building collapsing on you.
    - After the shockwave, you will need to find shelter somewhere inside and stay inside. At this time the nuclear debris from the mushroom cloud starts to fall down. Which gives you about 10-20 minutes.
    - Immediately cover your mouth, nose and eyes. You can do this with a mouth mask of by using some of you cloths as a mask.
    - At this point in time the Gamma-radiation becomes your enemy. Hide in a basement of a large building or in the subway system.
    - Once you found a suitable place, remove your clothing. Put it in a plastic bag and leave it as far away as possible.
    - If possible take a shower or wash your face, hands and any body parts that weren’t covert. Use a lot of water.
    - If you are hiding with other people try to keep as much distance as possible and keep wearing a mask.
    - Now it is important you stay indoors as long as you possible can. This is necessary because the radioactive waste loses its energy very quickly.
    - During this time it is safe to eat or drink packaged food items that were inside of a building. Do not consume food or liquids that were outdoors.
    - Lastly, it is often best to wait for government agencies to send help and follow their instructions. So stay tuned.

Only problem is we won’t get a warning, they stopped that years ago.

So you don’t think leaving the area immediately after the bomb drops to get away from the fallout

Thanks for the video Doctor, I would like to ask a question, so you said that the levels of radiation decay rapidly after the explosion several hours after it, so how can that be possible for atomic bombs using Plutonium 239 with a half life of 24000 years? We know that many nuclear experiements used that fuel and the efficiency of the explosions were very little liberating the radiactive material to the atmosphere through fallouts, how long is safe if any? Thanks

The greater the half life value, the less radioactive something is. It's the short-lived stuff that makes fallout insanely dangerous. Those isotopes lose 99% of their radioactivity after 48 hours.

Water is not compressible, but your lungs are bones are. It’s possible the overpressure could be transferred through the water to you. We used to use a saline IV bag with Det cord to breach doors, so it might not be a good idea. Water can transfer energy!
