23 Miles in the New Balance Rebel v4: Long Run Test

  • The New Balance Rebel v4 straddles the line between a lightweight speed shoe and a true daily trainer. So far in testing, the New Balance Rebel v4 has impressed me as a versatile, fun and lightweight option-but I wanted to see how it would perform over 2+ hours, as that was a key weakness of the Rebel v3. Here are my thoughts on the Rebel v4 as a long run shoe.

    It's starting to sound like a pretty good update. I've never run in a true super shoe so I don't have much frame of reference when you compare to the Alphafly or TYR.

    The Nike Downshifter 6 was the second running shoe I ever had. The cheapest shoe I could find, that still felt comfortable on step in. Loved it so much! Used to run every day back then, with my dog, so fond memories of that shoe. When I couldn't find it anymore, I tried the 10, which was a total different shoe, I only used it for walking. That's when my search for the perfect shoe, and my shoe hoarding started. Now that I'm used to good running shoes, I probably wouldn't even be able to run in a Downshifter 6 again.

    Congrats on your long run and SB prediction! Today I went out for my long 12 mile run using the Asics Superblast that I just bought for $180 (had a $20 gift card from xmas). It was fantastic- light, cushioned and responsive. This sounds like how you felt using the Boston 12, but over an ounce lighter... Def better than Speed 3 so far

    Great review! Love the rebels! And you answered my biggest question concerning v4. I prefer to train in non plated shoes if possible and have been struggling to find the perfect lightweight energetic long run shoe. I still use v2 & v3, but I might have to test these out for my 20 mile tempo runs along with the endorphin speed 4 and the Hyperion Max 2 when they come out.

    The market calling this and similar shoes minimal or flats is hilarious. The original Kinvara, which was glorified as a light weight cushion shoe to take on the marathon, had 18mm of foam in the heel with only 14 on the fore foot. The rebel v4 and Cielo road are awesome shoes.

  • @hawkf9199
    @hawkf9199 Před 3 měsíci +1

    It looks like a great daily trainer, might fit in the rotation for road work when trails are muddy, using Nnormal Kjerag. Speed 3 have felt a little unstable with forefoot striking and started feeling a little too squishy for my liking.

    Thanks again for these ongoing reviews. So many people just do one take based on one or two runs. I';m curious where exactly this shoe would end up in your lineup. Something like a NB 1080/880 is probably a workhorse/recovery/LSD shoe, but is this shoe nimble enough for shorter tempo workouts? (if it is I have a feeling it might be a great value shoe, as I'm guessing the extra stack will add to its durability). I loved Rebels 2 and 3 as tempo shoes, wouldn't have considered them for LSD or recovery runs (though the 3 probably would have been okay for a short recovery, much like the Saucony Speed).
    I'm all for a varied shoe rotation, but just not sure what unique role this shoe could serve if it is not that effective for tempo workouts. Or is it just that plated trainers (I have real durability concerns about trainers with carbon plates) will always be better at the fastest paces/efforts?

    • @supwell
      @supwell  Před 3 měsíci +2

      I will probably use this as a lightweight daily trainer, treadmill and workout shoe for any fast and shorter (under 12 miles total) speed work going forward. I'm preferring to do workouts in plated shoes right now given my mileage levels and where I'm at in training (I can use all the help with recovery that I can get), but as we get into the summer and I'm in more of a strength and speed part of the training cycle I'll likely switch back into non plated shoes for speedwork. By the way, this shoe has handled recovery runs great as well so far - much better than v3

    Interesting coverage of this shoe. Would it be similar in cushioning to the Topo Cyclone 2? Topo has less stack but more pebax so maybe they balance out

    • @supwell
      @supwell  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I haven't tried the cyclone 2 yet but I've heard good things. I wouldn't attempt a 3 hour long run in it personally though - in my experience EVA based foams holds up a little better over the long haul. PEBA without the carbon plate can get a little squishy for my liking

    As a high school going into college runner what would you recommend for shoe rotations. As of right now I use the rebel v3 for my workouts but am looking for a shoe for recovery/long run. After seeing your videos about the v4 was maybe thinking those could be the ones

    • @supwell
      @supwell  Před 3 měsíci

      You may want a little more cushion for long runs if you're going more than 90 minutes. If the v3 still has life left for workouts, I'd get the 1080v13 for long and recovery runs and keep the v3 for fast running

      hahaha yeah these new shoes are sooo much more comfortable. i ran in the velocity nitro 3 again this afternoon to compare and they're super different - the rebels are better for slower paces and feel more forgiving. they also have a little more of a rocker. the velocity nitro 3 i like for fast running and they are better than the rebels for longer runs from the higher stack (i went 22 in the puma during testing). velocity nitro 3 definitely have a stiffer but more supportive feel in general than the rebels

    You can't beat or argue with nostalgia....people get crazy when you do. If I had to guess, the new trend is going to be around using these newer foams to their full potential by reducing the weight.
    AlphaFly V3 is a good example. Evo Pro 1 is another. Most brands are going to struggle for a bit on the weight side, but once they catch Nike and Adidas again....that's when we will see the next major shift in shoe tech.

    so you prefer the 1080 over the rebelv4 for a long run?

    • @supwell
      @supwell  Před 3 měsíci +5

      If I had to choose between the two for a long run then yes 1080 (unless it's a long run workout). But from new balance's training shoe lineup I prefer the sc trainer v2 the most for long runs. Cushion is soft and forgiving enough for long miles but the plate helps keep the midsole lively toward the 2+ hour mark. I don't take the 1080 past two hours - great shoe but it's a little soft for being out there for that long, and especially would not use it if running marathon pace

    • @koegness
      @koegness Před 3 měsíci

      @@supwell Thanks man. I'm still a lil scared of plates (don't know why), BUT I'm also a very inexperienced runner and barely go past the halfmarathon distance. So I guess I lot of these things don't apply to me. Love your channel tho!

    • @supwell
      @supwell  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Definitely the 1080v13 over this - more cushioning and support. But of all the shoes in new balance's lineup, I would actually suggest the SC Trainer v2 for that. The carbon plate in there helps a ton at the end of long runs but it's still soft and forgiving underfoot - it's a great long run shoe
