Shirley Muldowney (born June 19, 1940), also known professionally as "Cha Cha" and the "First Lady of Drag Racing", is an American auto racer. She was the first woman to receive a license from the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) to drive a Top Fuel dragster. She won the NHRA Top Fuel championship in 1977, 1980, and 1982, becoming the first person to win two and three Top Fuel titles.
Born Shirley Ann Roque in Burlington, Vermont, on June 19, 1940,[4] Muldowney began street racing in the 1950s in Schenectady, New York. "School had no appeal to me. All I wanted was to race up and down the streets in a hot rod," declared Muldowney.[3] When she was 16, she married 19-year-old Jack Muldowney.
It was Jack Muldowney who first taught me how to drive a car. Jack was the mechanic. He was the guy who tuned the cars that let the girl beat all the boys. I was a kid from upstate New York with no guidance, no direction. I was headed for trouble, nothing going for me. Then I found the sport at a very young age and was able to make something out of it.[6]
In 1958, Muldowney made her debut on the dragstrip of the Fonda Speedway. She obtained her NHRA pro license in 1965. She competed in the 1969 and 1970 U.S. Nationals in a twin-engined dragster in Top Gas.[2][6] With Top Gas losing popularity, Muldowney switched to Funny Car, buying her first car from Connie Kalitta.[6]
Around this time, her husband and she drifted apart; they finally divorced in 1972. "He didn't want to go nitro racing and we parted, but we stayed friends all those years until he passed away [in 2007]," she later said.[6][7]
Muldowney won her first major event, the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) Southern Nationals, in 1971.
She stepped up to Top Fuel, getting her license in 1973[2][6] (making her the first woman to do it), behind the wheel of Poncho Rendon's digger; Don Garlits signed her application, one of three signatures she needed to make it official; the other two were Tommy Ivo and Connie Kalitta.[8] From 1973 to 1977, she teamed up with Kalitta as the Bounty Hunter and Bounty Huntress in match races, in a pair of Ford Mustangs, hers a Buttera chassis, and his a Logghe.[9] The Bounty Huntress Mustang caught fire at Dragway 42 in Ohio in 1973.[10]
In Columbus, Ohio, in 1976, Muldowney dominated Top Fuel, qualifying number-one by 0.05 second, setting low elapsed time (ET) and top speed of the meet, having the low ET in every round, breaking her own top speed record in the final, and winning the class.[11] An unprecedented three NHRA Top Fuel Dragster world championships followed, in 1977, 1980, and 1982.
Muldowney's 1986 dragster
Muldowney's success met enormous opposition from those who felt drag racing (or any form of motorsport, for that matter) was no place for women. Garlits has said about her:
Now, if you ask who do I have the most respect for, I'd say Shirley Muldowney. She went against all odds. They didn't want her to race Top Fuel, the association, the racers, nobody...just Shirley - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Round2 has got to stop releasing so many cool kits, im gonna go broke 🤣
I hear Ya I'm the same way
Looks good but I can assure you that funny car never had a halibrand quick change rear end in it. That axle would never survive one launch. It would have had a Ford 9” in it.
I finally bought the 1/72 millennium falcon 💯
The stoped!! Have you seen the March model review. 👎
I was actually amazed. The '40 Ford 2 door sedan isn't bad!!
@@anthonyhendricks7377 I just built that 39 ford kit, same box art but early version it was fun. Chrysler looks good too. Not every month can be a winner though 😆
I might have to add this to my collection; Keith Black was my grandfather and I had the pleasure of meeting Shirley a few times over the years. What a neat kit!
Kieth Black - inventor of the cam ground pistons - that "distorted to round when up to running temps. Still used in all car engines today. Pistons used to be made round and would go oval at temp, causing oil burning and reduction in power. Kieth is STILL one of my heros ! ! !
Oh wow, very very cool @SolamenteVees
Shirley was a trooper. If she wanted to do something - ANYTHING - she did it.
Her track records tell the story. Her movies are good as well.
Dig this build - thanks...
Very cool, love the vintage Funny Cars!!!!👍🏁🏁👍
Love the funny cars.. I had the McCulloch 1/16 kit.. They are the best
Great kit. I watch videos of the old style funny car races. Great review and great work. I like it, have a nice day.
Wow! This kit brings back some memories.... I built this kit when it first came out in '72 er '73... Damn, I'm old....🥸😎👍
Very nice cool she was called the Queen of drag racing.
I like it, your build turned out great.
The "Heart like a Wheel" movie is very good as well.
Shirley “Cha-Cha” Muldowney, she was badass
I like the fact this kit has a driver figure and open parachutes included - would make it suitable for a diorama. Shame the driver figure isn't molded in a way that makes life easier in terms of installing it with all the other chassis parts in place, but part of this hobby is finding creative solutions to such dilemmas. I recently built a plane where the instructions recommended amputating the pilot figure so he could fit into the completed cockpit.
Nice build -thanks.
hey Chris, I looked for other youtube videos of the same subject that you are building, BUT most do not exist and the ones the do, SUCK!!! Keep upi the Great builds!!!
Funny cars can be humorous.
Yeah, they're a gas!
I put my comment in the wrong place sorry. So beautiful car. It would not have had a halibrand quick change rear end, it would not stand the horsepower. The small side wings are canard wings and work with the down force created by the exhaust which produces more down force than you might think.about 700lbs per pipe. The small tank is called a puck tank and catches blow by from the crank case. I’ve worked for a few nhra teams over the years and met Shirley numerous times great person. Hope this helps some.
You raised a good point about the figure😲. I'd go for cutting the feet apart and warming legs over a candle,to soften, then bending them out. Amputation should be the last resort,as I think the legs will remain visible🤔
Cool! My mom met Shirley Muldowney and got her autograph. Heart Like a Wheel is a good movie, even for people who aren't racing fans.
Nice workmanship Chris, The back window should be taped off and painted silver to look like an Airbrushed window.
Great build as always. Love the early floppers!!! Body has to plan ahead and heat that driver to get it in. Can't wait to add Shirley's car to my collection.
I don't remember Shirley being so flat chested.
🤪🤪🤪
This is really a neat kit. You did an excellent job putting it together. Thanks for sharing.
Another awesome looking build as always Chris the motor looks GREAT an thanks for the time you invest for us
Great job on your Muldowney flopper Chris! 🤙🏼
Very nice Christopher
The correct new Buterra frame instead of the '66 LSC one. Outstanding.

Hello Sir! I really like your videos! everything described very well and in detail. I also like to look at them when I'm working on something. best regards
That looks AWESOME 👍👍
Very cool👍😎. One of my heroes 👍. It would be nice if round2 would do some modern dragster with markings for some of the new girls👍😎. Thanks for showing and best wishes from jolly old England 👍😎Pete 🤓
Great build 👍
That was Connie Kalittas old car, Cha-Cha and him worked out a deal on his funny car when he went top fuel. Nevertheless, I gotta get hers cause I’ve already that when it was his car, with his name and stuff all over it.
Glad they finally did the correct car! The last one MPC did as the Muldowney car was like a 74 Road Runner! Totally wrong! LOL! Although she did run a Plymouth Satellite. and that would be a cool kit as well. But, this is the old Blue Max funny car that became quite a few others, including Connie Kalitta's Mustang, which in real life became this car.
Was there in ‘72 at Dragway 42 in West Salem, when “Cha Cha” caught fire in a funny car for the first time. Very scary situation.
"There is nothing funny about Funny Cars!"
Nice job , would like to see you start adding wiring
Cool as always. 👍
The fire suit is not asbestos. It's Nomex
Real nice job mate👍
Love this kit, but wish they would release the Sattilite funny car she used as well, plus the front of these mpc funny cars sat up too far.
Fonda, early 60's, bump at the end of the strip between turns 3 and 4, Cha Cha's Stingray, summer nights.
The big fault is the tinwork. It must be cut to fit up into the back of the windshield, and the top of the engine cover will require modifying the portion covering the injector. The injector hat from Polar Lights kits is lower and will provide better clearance. These kits can be made to ride much lower and in correct stance.
I really enjoy watching this channel. You’re great and presenting the models, and breaking down all the options they offer. Your models come out great and it’s motivating me to start doing models for my sons room, until he’s old enough to start working on them with me. I remember how I enjoyed building them as a kid and the skill it taught me were great… Question do you have to prep the model car body before painting them? Do you have to clean it with a chemical or something, or can you just paint it right out if the box?
Keep up the great work…
Thanks Anthony
Those front wheels were magnesium, so I would mix some silver with some light, 1:04:46 flat grey for the center for sure.
Trivial question for you'll. Who signed Shirley Muldowney licenses to drag racing? The car looks great as always Chris.
I definitely like to see more moebius f100 kits preferably that 72 sport custom
great build , onna kool kit...Rock onnn Chris...kutgw

Back then MPC was infamous for using stock bodies and outdated frames. Box art was used to "mask" the fakery !

❤❤❤ "" THAT IS SWEET "" ❤❤❤
I'm going to pull out my Strike Force Corvette.,and look at it. This seems to have many pieces That looked the same or close. The frame rails, the driver, the headers. Like you said they switch or add parts between the same manufacturers different kits.
Hi There, Nice video and nice job on the build. What glue are you using for the windshield?
Surely it's Shirley.
Do you spray the chrome parts with a dull coat so the panel liner can spread?
What glue are you using? White lid with brush?
My experience with using Keith Black's engines all are Dodge engines, i run a Hemi on my pulling tractor
What kind of glue do you use
What does he use to wash his bodies can anyone tell me?
Love your channel but don't like the new upside down camera 📹 angle.
Thanks, but you must not have watched a video in almost three years because I've been doing the building session part of the review with the overhead camera in every video for that long.
Have a great day!
The rear tires are wrong.. Not goodyears. Look at decals on rear quarter says “ M& H tires. Round 2 screwed up.
