A veteran is a veteran. I've never been ineligible because I served from 1988 - 2010. I can't imagine serving and not being accepted by the Legion. Welcome to all those who were ineligible and are now eligible.

I served in the Air Force honorably from 1976-1980. I tried to join the American Legion around 1981 and was shocked to learn I was ineligible due to the time period I served. Every person that joined the service and that served honorably should have always been eligible to join. The fact that there was no foreign war during my service time did not diminish my service or risk that I enlisted for. The VFW serves the purpose of honoring those that served in a war time period. The American Legion should have always been available to all veterans. Glad they have finally corrected this injustice to all those that served our country honorably.

I was a member for almost ten years. I was let down by the local post I was in. I saw the true colors of many older veterans in my home area. They chose to talk about me and what I was going through with others and at local taverns. You should do something about educating them better about privacy. Very disappointed with them and the American legion as a whole. I did everything with the VA on my own and taught myself how it really works, the process and had better results with out the legion. Stick with honoring veterans, memorials and funerals. Thank you for your service, work on cleaning up the ranks to improve it. Alcohol too, that's a different subject. Disabled veteran, out here.

I just joined for the first time last week because of an invitation I received in the mail. I’m looking forward to becoming an active member, not just a due payer. I live North of Seattle and I’m surrounded by Sailors. I was army myself but my old man was retired navy so I know the culture. Do I need to find a post now or do I get assigned to one?

Welcome! We're glad you're here. You won't be assigned to a post. You can go to www.legion.org and click on FIND A POST at the top of any page to find posts near you. We encourage new members to visit several posts and find the one that best fits them.
