- Julie Fowlis, Éamon Doorley, Zoë Conway and John McIntyre have come together at the invitation of the Royal Irish Academy’s Committee for Irish Language, Literature and Celtic Cultures to create a truly memorable new piece of music to celebrate Colm Cille 1500. The commission was enabled by the kind assistance of the Department of Foreign Affairs. Their piece is based on a text from Alexander Carmichael’s Carmina Gadelica, a multi-volume collection of Gaelic prayers, incantations, charms and songs collected in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland over one hundred years ago. The musicians have also woven into the text some words from a blessing from the Middle-Irish period. Their composition bridges the Sea of Moyle and generations of tradition in a contemporary and layered arrangement using voices, guitar, bouzouki, violin and oboe to commemorate the remarkable Columba - a man who left an indelible mark on the life, literature and landscape of both Ireland and Scotland.
In the video they have made to accompany their composition, the four musicians and singers have invited artist Ellis O’Connor to respond in paint, inspired by the music they have created. It is an enchanting experience.

Tá na ceoltóirí céimiúla Julie Fowlis, Éamon Doorley, Zoë Conway agus John McIntyre i ndiaidh píosa úrnua spreagúil ceoil a chumadh mar fhreagra ar chuireadh ó Choiste Léann na Gaeilge, Litríocht na Gaeilge agus na gCultúr Ceilteach in Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann chun Colm Cille 1500 a chomóradh. Is le cabhair ó Roinn Gnóthaí Eachtracha na hÉireann a rinneadh an coimisiún seo. Tá an píosa seo cumadóireachta bunaithe ar théacs ón bhailiúchán il-imleabhair le Alexander Carmichael Carmina Gadelica a chuimsíonn orthaí, amhráin, paidreacha agus beannachtaí a bailíodh i nGaeltacht na hAlban corradh agus céad bliain ó shin. Tá curtha leis an téacs ag na ceoltóirí trí ábhar ó phaidir Mheán-Ghaeilge a fhí tríd. Tá an dá thaobh de Shruth na Maoile tugtha leo acu agus dúchas na gcianta mar an gcéanna chun cóiriú comhaimseartha agus ilghnéitheach a dhéanamh agus feidhm á baint as guthanna, giotár, bouzouki, veidhlín agus óbó. Is ceiliúradh fónta é seo ar an fhear eaglasta a d’fhág an oiread sin anála ar shaol, ar shaíocht agus ar thírdhreach na hÉireann agus na hAlban araon.
San fhíseán a d’ullmhaigh na ceoltóirí mar léiriú ar an saothar ceoil, d’iarr siad ar an ealaíontóir Ellis O’Connor géilleadh don inspioráid a chothaigh an ceol nuachumtha seo agus dul i mbun peintéireachta dá réir. Is álainn agus is draíochtúil an comhdhéanamh é.

Let me express my eternal love for all the Gaelic music and languages. Erin go bragh, Alba gu brath! From Ukraine
No one can know why the Creator made his birth place a part of the globe. I did not want mine, although it is located near beautiful Ukraine. I am attracted by empty, windy mountains without snow, these cool lakes, no human settlements, and the most dignified Ocean. Erin go breagh.
I hope that you are staying safe. Not Irish (or Scottish) either, but I love this music, too. Best wishes from Hawaii
Слава Україні, Glòir don Úcráin, opìtatowèwak akàmaskiy è-mamàhtàkwahkᐅᐲᑕᑐᐍᐘᐠ ᐊᑳᒪᐢᑭᐩ ᐁ ᒪᒫᐦᑖᑿᕽ ❤️🇨🇦🇺🇦 I’m a Canadian Gael but I’m happily able to read Cyrillic from teaching myself as a child. I have some Ukrainian family members on my dad’s side of the family, so there’s always been an interest for me in the food, language, people and music. I wish you all the love, breathtaking adventures and happiest days to come~ and as well that you can travel for yourself to the isles soon!!
Tha seo glè àlainn, làn le spiorad na sìthe.
My ancestry is all from the isles of Britain and 2 percent Viking, and your voice, with the Gaelic language you sing, studs a feeling in me, a mix of longing and love. This may sound cheesy but it makes my mind at ease, makes me feel connected to others i have not meet, and makes me long for my own home and a home I've never known, since hearing your music it has changed me in the best possible way, thank you, and may danú bless you and your kin.
I totally understand. I was born in The USA but my ancestry is Irish and Scottish. Before I knew that though I always felt a longing when I heard the music
Ive been to iona twice,it really is a very peaceful place to be.The local graveyard is also very interesting as the past kings of Scotland were buried there .The late politician John smith is also buried there as well, the best prime minister we never got to vote a second time. The painter is as lyrical as the singer.Love your work julie
Fantastic. Once again, superb, as always. And what an incredible honoring of St Columba. Thank you.
Well THAT was an exceptional experience.
My heartfelt thanks to Ms. O'Conner, Ms. Conway, Mr. McIntyre, Mr. Doorley, and of course Ms. Fowlis along with all who worked on the productions, both audio and video.
Just a piece of work to treasure and return to again and again.
This is so beautiful, like all of her songs! Hug air a' bhonaid mhoir is my favourite by far, but this is a close second. 😁
I agree with everything you said there.
I LOVE "Hùg Air A' Bhonaid Mhòir"! It's my favorite too. I'm happy to say I can sing it (and I don't even know any Scottish Gaelic), LOL! XD
My God!I've never heard a more beautiful voice!I can't get enough of you Julie! The songs of my people!❤
Very relaxing and briliant from Julie,as always ! I also like to paint, wile listening Celtic music ! Greetings for one and only Julie Fowlis from Celtic Crew Belgrade-Serbia
Got a whole bunch of gaelic ancestry and when Julie brings these songs to life, I am confident my Weem ancestors are smiling.
On the side of the road going to Ardnamurchan Point..depending on water level..theres a perfect stream of water called St Columba's Well..and an old porcelain mug..the Saint is supposed to have drunk from there when he passed through this area ..in the 70s..we'd always stop the car and take a sip of the pure Highland water..
As well as an incredible sound, the video of the artist is so amazing....
I was getting late 90's Enya from this... And I liked it.
Lass, you inspire me so much. I found your music recently and realized you sang for Brave. You have made such a career of yourself and are probably my favorite singer outside of Maria Franz. Your songs give me nostalgic feelings and are so addicting. I'm writing a song called "The Cabin" which will be in Irish, and will have the musical styles from your roots. It's about a Cabin which a group of 4 friends visit during an adventure from November-December, and is about one of the characters hearing an ethereal call like one from "A phuithrag 'sa phuithar" and just wow. And this song, just WOW!!! You are just amazing and you deserved and deserve everything. Thank you for curing my depression and soothing my aura.
Thank you Julie for being the inspiration for bringing the old flute out of the closet and restringing the old guitar. It's been decades and feels so good to play once again.
That was wonderful. Thank you! ❤️🎶🎻🏴☄️🌌😊❤️
St Columba of Iona pray for us
From Vilafranca del Penedès (Spain), what a magic music and wonderful voice.
Absolutely gorgeous as always! I’m from Kuwait, and have zero Celtic ancestry, however, I feel a strong connection to your music, Julie. Thank you so much for this ❤️❤️❤️
That's what makes Julie such a superb artist.
Wow❤😃🥰
Thank you, I love St. Columba!
Desde Barcelona, muchas gracias Julie por esta música tan preciosa

Breathtaking. 🌺 Pressed play to listen to the loved singing voice of Julie Fowlis and was thoroughly entranced/enchanted by the equally as breathtaking glimpses of Ellis O’Connor's artistry and skills.

Respect from the Celtic Pagans of Eire. What a beautiful creation in these paintings and music. Keep our culture strong, teach our children of the old paths. Ipads, and technology will not put our old paths in darkness. Slainte agus Saoirse
I love everything this lady touches - is this normal? Surely, she can't be so wonderful all the time? I hugely admire the other great artists as well, btw. Interesting to see how Scotland-Ireland relations will evolve post-Brexit beyond the cultural realm.
Like the sea at the end of a storm...
(I wish I could understand the lyrics.)
it transcends language in a sense..its rhythmic and mesmerising...

Is it posible to listen to this amazing song on Spotify?
🍀🎶🎨❤️ THANKS 🌸
Hi
Here's an idea if you like epic music. 💡
You need to listen to Mötley Crüe! They are epic and they have the best drummer ever! HE CAN EVEN PLAY UPSIDE DOWN!!! Look up Hooligan's Holiday, Misunderstood, Kickstart My Heart, Dr. Feelgood, Home Sweet Home, Primal Scream, the albums Too Fast For Love, Shout At the Devil, Dr. Feelgood, the self-titled Mötley Crüe, and Tommy's drum solos. You won't regret it.
Hi how are you doing my friend
@@davelamore6309 I was just listening to Tommy Lee, like always.
@@MsChick-hn1qo that’s good, hope you are safe from the virus ?
Lovely and all very fairytale-like except Columba would turn in his grave if he saw the state of Ireland today - Hedonistic and morally defunct. Let's lose the fake indulgence and concentrate on the music
