Luigi's Mansion 2 HD - A Game Worth Remaking? - DF Tech Review - Switch vs 3DS

- Nintendo is back with yet another excellent Switch game. Even though Luigi's Mansion 2 HD was originally a release for the 3DS handheld, development studio Tantalus has done an excellent job in modernising the visuals - and yes, although hardly spectacular, it's another solid addition to the bulging Switch library.

Wish Luigi’s mansion 1 was also included for that price …
Yeah, it should have been included.
Remake for Switch 2? 👀
Who knows, maybe they're saving a Luigi's Mansion 1 remake for the next Switch.
@@wogardrodriguez2671another remake yeah....
Yeah suprised it wasn't a pikmin 1 and 2 situation
That 3ds version still looks damn good
It looks fantastic in 3D.
Yep really great use of the hardware.
Real! This game, along with Kid Icarus Uprising and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, are prime examples I go to in order to show that the 3DS hardware isn't weak like people think. It's just that many devs didn't bother taking advantage of it.
The 3d diorama look in person is more impressive to look at than the hd version here.
It really feels like everyone underestimated the 3DS back then@@Tiggster-qr8mw
Note: Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon is titled "Dark Moon" only in the US. The original name, and the european name, is Luigi's Mansion 2, that is also the title of the re-release worldwide.
I was wondering why it looked like what I played on my 3ds. Thanks
Was NOA high when they proposed that subtitle? What an odd idea.
Was confused by the intro, thanks!
@@DanielZealI think "Dark Moon" is cooler than just a "2"
@@Drybones2015Yeah as an european, i really loved the subtitle “Dark Moon”.
That original soundscape was indeed amazing. I didn't realize it until you played that clip. It brought me back 20 years.
It supported surround sound too, via Dolby Pro Logic II. Most modern surround sound systems should still have a mode that supports this, though it may be called by a different name (since most matrix surround decoders are more or less backwards compatible with Pro Logic). The easiest way to check that it's working is if the thunder is coming from your rear speakers.
Price is the issue. This at best should be 40 bucks.
Nintendo. Nintendo never changes...the price.
Selling a $30 game released over a decade ago in current year for $60. That's Nintendo for you
@@RockyRacoon5 Say that to Metroid Prime remastered. That game truly spoiled me with how good a remaster is, with a solid fair price.
I've noticed the last release of Yuzu still works great....
And what would you do about that price?
This makes me appreciate how great the 3ds was. I miss those days
The 3ds was a beast and nobody can tell me otherwise. I spent thousands of hours on my 3ds. Between monster hunters, Pokémon’s, Smash Brothers, Kingdom Hearts, I had hundreds of hours in each. And then just all the bangers in between, Kid Icarus Uprising, DragonBall Fusions, Mario Kart, the Zelda remakes, all the great Kirby games, Shovel Knight. I mean the list literally goes on and on. Battery life for days, the Circle Pad Pro before the XL became a thing. I can’t even begin to guess how much time I actually spent with mine in my hands
The stereoscopic 3d on this game was crazy
For real bro! I also think we will say the same thing about the switch in several years too.
I appreciate you doing the video at 4K despite the game only outputting at 1080P because it goes a long way towards getting around the compression issues of CZcams and it really lets the visuals and art direction of the game shine.
I’m Playing Luigi’s Mansion 2 at 4k 120hz on “Yatzy” now. So easy VSync unlock ,looks descent on LG G3 .
I wish Luigi's Mansion 1 would be remade. It's honestly one of the best Mario games on the Gamecube imo
I was thrilled when it came to 3DS but I agree I would love to see a Switch 2 remake, 4k HDR with new textures but keeping the creepiness of the original.
One of my favorite games
I believe its actually a Luigi game.
@@HerbieChuckNorris pretty sure they just meant Mario universe characters.
I expect it will be remade on Switch 2 one day
I absolutely love your work. You provide insight and articulate things in things I notice but could never verbalize. I’m always blown away by the quality of the content you put out and wanted to commend you and your team for the work you’re doing! Thank you!
It's crazy how good the OG Luigi's Mansion holds up visually 😮
LM 3 looks like a cgi movie
LM 2 looks like a cgi kids show
Both are mighty accomplishments for the switch
That is a really good comparison.
Now you make me wish Illumination makes a Luigi's mansion movie in 3's style
LM3 legit looks like a ray tracing demo, game has impressive lighting
No...its a 3ds game😂
@@jimmyjay689 Really the remake looks just like the 3ds game? Rage bait much
£50 is absolutely crazy.
Write 60 bucks for a remake for a port is ridiculous
Right? I didn't even play that for Zelda Tears of the Kingdom.
9 hour average remake of a 3DS game or a 100+ hour epic adventure that's entirely new.
Nintendo is bonkers.
It’s not £50. It’s £39.65 on amazon
@@Jackosaurus117get less poor
@@Jackosaurus117
It's £50 on Nintendo's own website.
Luigi’s Mansion 3 is still my favorite Switch game to date. Can’t wait for 2!
Mansion 3 co-op is the best experience of our universe
I love 3. Hate the final boss battle.
My wife, who does not play or care for video games at all, has beat luigi's mansion 3 about 4 times now 😅. Each time finding extra treasure somewhere or figuring out some game mechanic she didn't know before (like flashlighting the spiders, mice, bat's, and etc, instead of trying to suck them up.) Yeah, she definitely would love a 4th one, I'm sure she'll like 2.
@@dece870717No disrespect, but beautiful wife!
1 and 3 rule. Dark Moon blows tho
For the price of $60 bucks? Yeah no. This game has no business being that expensive. It's not even 'Metroid Prime Remastered' (more of a complete remake in my opinion) level of quality graphical and performance conversion, and that game was only $40-50 bucks.
However though, I am STILL glad that this game was even ported to the Switch with "some" noticeable improvements mostly to the number of polygons the characters got instead of a straight from the 3DS conversion job. Because I really so badly wanted to finish this game on my 3DS but never got around to finishing it. My Luigi's still stuck at the beginning of that old abandoned clocktower level on my red beat up N3DS XL to this day.
Saying "some" noticeable improvements implies you didnt even watch the video...
The game needed an overhaul remake.
Quality of the Remake is nice. Really should have been bundled with the first to remotely justify that $60 price tag. Considering they already ported the first with updated assets to the Dark Moon engine for the 3ds port I don't think it would be too big of a hurdle.
This seems like the kind of switch game that will go down to $30 for physical copies within a couple months. Will prolly pick it up then but no higher
@@user-cd3je7lo2z I have. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to downplay the devs' work. I'm saying "some" because to the normies, the HD version won't really give you that immediate 'Night & Day' difference if you look at it at first glance. You'd have to have a _really_ technical viewpoint in order to _really_ appreciate what Tantalus have accomplished with this remaster. Which they've done a great job doing in my opinion. It is an 'HD' remaster after all, not a full-blown remake. I myself am not a total expert like John from DF. But I always appreciate the subtle but still substantial enhancements given to an old game's graphical details, while still keeping the visual spirit of the original.
It's just the unjustified $60 price that's bugging me man...
You saying that you are glad this was ported to Switch.
Yet, Xenoblade X locked to the terrible Wii U is one of the best games Nintendo has ever made, period. And they done nothing with it, I'd take a straight port for $60 HAPPILY.
Kinda like the pre- or early 2000 "CGI", "Silicon Graphics" looking, but now in real-time! That says a lot how a good combination of art style and techniques can achieve amazing result.
What are you on about it looks like garbage
@@Zomboy4313 And what would be your realistic example of a good looking game on Switch? To me this looks as good as other great looking ones on the Switch.
@@XLStressLuigi’s mansion 3
I’m actually really happy you’re taking an objective look at the remastering work. A big criticism of the game I’ve been seeing is that people are thinking it was only made higher resolution and had some texture work
These slightly shorter retro-inspired videos by Linneman are perfect viewing for the commute to work!
I just want an HD remake of the first one. Loved that game!
It’s still the best of the Series in my opinion 👍🏻
If you really want an HD remake of the first game you can get it any time.
HD makes old games look worse imo.
@@Der_KistenteufelI agree still think the first one is the best and nostalgic too.
@@trapez77you just wanna complain about something .
I love these comparisons. Excellent work.
The best review I've seen so far. Getting this for sure
Do you know how happy it makes me when I get home and there is a new DF video to soak my eyes with ! Thank you chaps , never sell out 👌
Man, the amount of games coming out this year will have the DF Crew busy from now through Q2 2025. It is incredible to see how many games have their complete series available on the Switch.
@NintenJon2023 Indeed, they owe it to Nintendo for giving them lots of traffic this year 🤣
This is an impressive remaster. It's so much cleaner, all while maintaining the original ambiance.
But the price is too expensive
@@21backwards78 It's Nintendo, what do you expect, water to not be wet?
I appreciate your review as a lot of commentators online are making it out to be an upgrade to visuals and that is it. Your analysis shows more than that was done. I am seeing in the comments section people complaining about costs.
When I first played Prime Remastered I didn't realize how much better it looked until I watched the comparison videos. I'm glad they've made substantial improvements to this game as well. I really hope they do this with Link Between Worlds!
We can only hope but part of me doubts it'll happen, at least anytime soon. Maybe next console but I needed something like Echoes of Wisdom to assure me that top down Zelda wasn't dead
I think it would've been worth the effort for Nintendo to remake this to the level of fidelity that Luigi's mansion 3 had. A similar treatment for the first part would have been the ultimate release
I'm sure if Retro Studios would do the Remaster, it would have been even better; and in 60. Retro Studios are those who made Metroid Prime Remastered. But they are busy with Metroid Prime 4 at the moment. I don't understand how anyone can get excited about Luigis Mansion 2 HD, in the sense of being amazing.
They might as well make a whole new game at that point
@@leftyfourguns That's the point of a Remake. But even for a Remaster, this port is quite underwhelming.
The only issue is that (even though I agree) is that Mansion 2 uses a different engine across the board versus 3, and implementing that kind of detail into a different engine would basically be a retooling of an older engine. I feel like we'll be getting Masnion 1 remake with the 3rd games engine in mind, I'm sure 2 was done to just pump some sales, and tbh it doesn't look bad! Just mote cartoony over animated film like 3 is.
Yeah if they also remade the first game and included both in one box for 60$ then I would grab it day 1.
Metroid Prime Remastered showed us how it's done.
Ah, DF Switch love! I always like hearing these guys talk about how impressive developers can be on this platform.
OMG that [11:20] scene was so funny, the two green ghosts were playing rock paper it was hilarious
Yup, I'm getting this day one, started replaying on my OG 3DS and it's such a good game.
One of the best examples of aesthetics vs graphics I've ever seen. It looks gorgeous.
Meanwhile, someone else released three Spyro games or three Crash Bandicoot games for 40 euros.
While also being remakes and running at 60 fps on consoles I guess.
@@xyoxus They weren't 60 lol
and still had the same flaws and archaic gameplay of the ps1 era, good visuals does not equal a good remake.
@@user-cd3je7lo2zLuigis Mansion 2 is a very mediocre game itself
Luigi Mansion is a strong and popular IP and doesn't need to be released at cheap pricing to attract consumers.

you can get a used copy for cheaper, especially when used physical Switch game prices become cheap.
The clouds seem to be hard and angular on purpose for art-design reasons in the 3DS version, also see the toon-like skybox or things like fire effects, spider web or the bushes and gothic lanterns at 7:20
Next Level Games released Mario Strikers just 2 years ago...
We try to forget that
whats your point
@paul-nj1ig He said in the video, that the developer is due for a new release because they haven't done a game for a whole.
Tantalus's remasters of Nintendo games always seem to keep the feel of the originals, and it's hard to appreciate how much changed until you put them head-to-head. Great comparison
Love the sound from Luigi’s mansion on game cube. That was a great reminder
Holy shit. It's really impressive just how on-model every single little detail is. All new lighting, textures, models, rendering engine, and yet the color grading, shadow placement, and cameras all stay exaxt. Even the same raindrops fall in the same places.
Thank you for actually giving this a fair shot instead of just going "remaster bad"
That's not really the narrative. It's more like "price bad", which is true.
The first game is my favorite Nintendo game of all-time. Would really love to be able to play it on the Switch, even just as a port. Still, glad the second game is getting some love! The visual improvements are very noticeable and it looks good. Will be nice to play it on a bigger screen now that it's on a console. Looking forward to it!
just look at that chrome dome shine
Well I'm definitely buying this as soon as I can!
You definitely deserve more recognition for this!
I would pay for a Star Fox 64 3D HD
I'm not interested at full price. If it included a remaster of the original it'd be worth it to me. Shame that the LM1 remake is stuck on 3DS, as this would have been a great opportunity to bring both games forward.
And what can you do about that price?
@@Sly2Cooper wait two years for the game to maybe go on sale for $40? It’s gonna be full price most of the time forever.

1 is better in that regard but 2 does have some good atmosphere when you pay close attention, it can get creepy in places you wouldn't expect
True, but it's not a better game
@amadeus.7436 Eh you could definitely argue that it is
@@Mwchael I wouldn't. It's a glorified tech demo. Great idea and it's fairly fun to play but it's very short and shallow.
It's an even harder sale at $60.
Keep hoping we'll see the same treatment for Samus Returns as well! It wasn't amazing as far as Metroid games go, but it was good enough it deserves to not just die on the 3DS as a late release.
Excited to play it! Hope the first game gets remastered for Switch/Switch 2 as well 💚
They should have done 1 and 2 bundle.
Love this game! I'm happy to see it return with a fresh coat of paint, and I'm glad to know it's well done. It might be my favourite game in the trilogy.
Do miss Luigi's nervous humming of the theme tune!
One issue I noticed is E. Gadd's call theme plays for a second before the results theme plays, and in cutscenes if the level has that, like after the spider boss when Luigi does a little dance and gets scared by a tiny spider from behind.
3:33 John is that you
The switch is such an outstanding little machine when you consider it's limitations. I don't own one and at this stage, I'm waiting for the switch2. But when you see some conversions like this and also the great catalogue of games the platform has to offers, it's still very tempting to look at the second hand market.
Luigi in the first game is terrified, but in the second he seems super relaxed! 😅
thanks, Haven't play this game since 2013, Didn't realized how drastic these changes were
Much bigger upgrade than I thought 👍
Yes, and no, it’s definitely not worth $60. It adds really nothing new.
@@blakelandry9313 Certainly not $60, but I thought it was $40?
Nope it's frickin 60 dollars
Love your unique style, never change!
Indeed, since it's a John video, one would expect some retro references, and the Wipeout bit was precisely that :) Considering everything, those Wipeout Saturn ports were quite good.
Yes Wipeout wasn't a game well suited to the Saturn's architecture
I really liked this on the 3DS, completed it. I don’t know about the remaster, as I didn’t finish Luigi’s Mansion 3, didn’t think it was that good.
i really hope all these 30fps first party switch games will get a 60fps patch on switch 2 but knowing nintendo im not gonna hold my breath
Unfortunately Nintendo doesn't care about you and me. Our only choice is to play them via emulator even if Nintendo doesn't like it.
1 and 2 are tied as my favorite games in the series, so I’m definitely getting this. The ghost catching and the PERSONALITY 2 oozes is just 👌👌.
Probably a hot take but I can deal.
The professor looks like Rich 10 years from now.
It's to bad that it doesn't run in 60 but as you say John, I prefer a locked 30 than an unlocked and inconsistent frame rate.
Thanks John 😊👍🏼
Hope to see a comparative video for the HD version of Donkey Kong Country Returns as well on your Channel ☺️
8:55 I loved the stereoscopic 3D. I would consider a Switch 2 if they gave that another shot but that seems impossible with the world seemingly wanting to stay in 2D forever.
The pixely look that the game has is honestly so iconic for it that I’d prefer that over Switch
Ah, Tantalus are the devs, nice! I wonder if that means Mario and Luigi Brothership is by next level with old dev support.
Looks really good from this video. Often times just highering the resolution does alot for games like the PS2 era, but they have gone the extra mile with this game.
They really haven't though. It looks slightly better than the 3DS version and that's where the new additions start and end.
10:30 they forgot what bass is
Still crazy how good how good some 3DS games looked.
This is going to look dope on my OLED!
It would be interesting to compare the models and stuff in this remaster with Capcom's Luigi's Mansion Arcade (which is an on-rails arcade adaptation of Dark Moon) since they probably go on different ways on HD-fying these stuff compared to the original 3DS game.
Im ok with 30fps to be honest, uncapped fps in my opinion belongs on PC where you can upgrade your machine eventually. If you cannot make your game running on your console (whichever console) at a solid 144, 120, 60 fps, just leave it at a solid 30, specially on more powerful consoles than the switch
There's no need to question the existence of a 4th game, John-- Nintendo purchased Next Level and the sales numbers on Luigi's Mansion 3 are absolutely insane! You can bet they'll do a big boy remaster on 1 at some point too
Off topic, but you guys should look into the game Indika. The visuals are gorgeous
I remember seeing Luigi’s mansion in 2001 and I couldn’t believe the visuals, the animations and character. I instantly brought a GameCube and loved it. Well ahead of its time. This remake is worth the money. And I’d pay a lot for the first one again. Nothing but quality and care you won’t find anywhere else.
you said that Next level games had been quiet since the release of Luigi's mansion 3 but is not the case, they where the developers behind The Mario Strikers game from 2022,
but i also hope they're currently working on a fourth game
We need that 1st game, even if it just gets ported to some gamecube online, we need it. (Though I'd love a Remaster/remake)
samus return on switch would be nice
i know it’s a long shot but i would love if the Switch 2 had 3D display. i genuinely enjoyed it on the 3DS
Seeing what next level was able to accomplish with Luigi's Mansion 3 I'm very excited to see what they can do with another one in switch 2 with actual ray tracing
Any remaster of a game on portable device is worth. Let's admit it we love portable gaming but most everyone would take a big screen and looking forward than small screen and neck pain.
I am actually surprised. When it was first announced I was not surprised and the frame rate looked bad. They ended up doing a very good job after all!
Cool, I will buy it 👍🏻👌🏻
2:03 Tantalus also developed Twilight Princess HD.
I really wish more games on Switch (and honestly in general) put their focus on delivering a sharp clean image.
Looks like a overall a good upgrade, it is unfortunate that there is not any additional content.
Hoping for a Switch 2 release title. The "Luigi's Mansion" titles have always been my favorite of mine.
I personally think it looks excellent for what it is. They put the right amount of juice into all the most important graphical aspects. Imagine Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask 3D redone in the same way. If they're done on the Switch 2 they could look even better and potentially have more modern upgrades like HDR or even some light raytracing
I love all three games, but i still think the first has the best artstyle and atmosphere, when it comes to giving a feeling of "creepiness". The transparency look of the ghost and the excellent music, made it feel more like a horror game.
Yo! I just realized with them doing this, I would love to see Ocarina of Time 3DS and Majoras Mask 3DS ports would be amazing
I want a 3DS HD!
Oculus Quest 3 has a 3D emulator of 3DS.
Admittedly the 3D doesn't work on my eyes half as well now that I am an older adult rather than a kid, even with getting a New 3DS xl. But I will really miss it on this game even if I am in the minority. I love this game and the 3D looked great on it
I wonder if I can try emulating this game on a digital screen in VR for a higher resolution 3D screen, but I don't know if that emulator is Meta only or if it also works on PC headsets or if it supports upscaling. Would be interesting to mess around with although you obviously wouldn't get the higher resolution textures
I’ll get it eventually, when it’s on sale.
I must point out that, when you mentioned that the geometry was largely untouched in the exterior of the first mansion, it wasn't exactly correct. You can see on the fences and on the stones on the ground that the geometry was changed a little bit. The overall shape is the same, but both the fences and the stones have beveled edges now. Also, the vines climbing on poles and other stuff are much higher quality now
