The Real Story Behind Mid-Engine Corvette
Vložit
- čas přidán 7. 09. 2024
- The 2020 C8 Corvette is upon us. What you might not know is that the mid-engine Corvette has been cancelled many times. Chevrolet has a long history with mid-engine prototype cars reaching back all the way to the late 50s starting with Zora Arkus Duntov who is the father of the Corvette. His work started with the CERV I prototype car and he continued to push for a mid-engine vehicle throughout his career.
This video covers the story of the prototypes and looks at what we can expect at the reveal of the brand new Stingray Corvette in Tustin.
CORRECTION: I should have said "Oldsmobile Toronado" not "Pontiac Tornado"

A very nicely compiled bit of history! I enjoyed the video and I'm looking forward to the live stream!
Thank you!
I’m so excited for the new C8 Corvette. Can’t wait to configure one
I'm so excited to be at the reveal tomorrow!
You seem like a nice person
I’m 15. I’ve been in a Lamborghini Huracan but I didn’t drive it
Thanks
@Jeff Lee
Well, at least you got the corner in this conversation ;D.
No for real now, a mid engined car is the golden way to go, at least performance wise. The main part of the cars weight is on the rear axle and the car usually overstears instead of understearing, wich is good as long as the suspension does not favore a snap overstear as it is the case for, for example, an MR2.
Wow. 1960. The corvette was able to go 200mph that will ahead of its time.
Incredible, right?
When chevy was ahead of everyone
@@Cuhh346 The world changed! I'm really happy the C8 will bring some good fortune back to GM.
@@revmatchtv they really need it
For your information Pontiac never made a Tornado
However Cadillac El Dorado shared a platform with the “Oldsmobile TORONADO” which was front wheel drive as well as the Caddy.
Aside of that, pretty cool video.
I definitely messed up there!
RevMatchTV It’s ok, thank you for the acknowledgment.
I’m far from perfect, I’m an FAA A&P, was also ASE Certified Master Tech.
But I surely don’t know everything and I can’t and never been able to speak and verbally explain facts as fluid as you do.
Therefore believe me you have my respect and subscriber.
I’m considering leasing a C8 and try it out.
@@revmatchtv what about around 7:37 the suspension had "acuTators" think you were meant actuators.
"Chevy is looking for a younger buyer." Since when could young people ever afford a corvette????
It's always been an expensive car, but so is Porsche and Porsche has younger buyers.
i have a corvette im 32 i got it from an old guy who could afford it but got too old so if you dont mind waiting to buy a used one with hardly any miles
@port nut only a few worth collecting lol
Those younger buyers get them used
@@primary3093 and then when they get old they buy new.... its the circle of life kid
He protecc
He attacc
But most importantly
The corvette comes in blacc
It will be THICC
RevMatchTV it’s gonna have a thicc rear end if ya know what I mean ;)
younger buyer will buy used c7 when price may drop due to c8 .
Patiently waiting for that
You can already get C7s that are 5 years old. Those used cars will not be affected whatsoever by the C8. The only C7s affected by the C8 will be new ones still sitting on dealer lots when the C8 is out. Age and mileage is the only things that really affect used cars. This happens with every new car generation.
These car companies want a younger base lol. Yet the average US millenials (24-38 year old) income is roughly $41k. This car will be $70k? 😂 Should work out perfectly.
Younger market for them is 50yo vs 60s lolol
The median age is 61. If they can bring it down 10-15 years it’s a huge win.
Yup I know. I bought my C6 used at 29. I just don't think younger people on average can afford these sports cars with low salaries, student debt, and high rent.
'Leasing' is the magic word, folks!
Ray Boccino is leasing factored into age of ownership?
I predict the C8 Corvette will have 2 seats.
Smart man! 😉
Fantastic video, Eric! I didn't know a lot of these facts. So many cool Corvette's that never were! Honestly gets me so hype it's finally happening.
Also, I was wondering when you were going to point out the Devel style wing like function of some of the prototypes, hah. GM figured it out decades ago.
GM has always been a bit of a conservative company. I'm super excited for the reveal tomorrow!
This is *exactly* what I was searching for.
The switch to an MR Corvette is really surprising and interesting to me.
I had no idea that there was so much history to the idea.
Thank you for the history lesson, there are morons out there that don't believe that Zora's mid engine design was the true path for the Corvette. So glad you threw that argument into the trash. Can't wait to see the reveal later today!
Zora has ALWAYS been a proponent of mid-engine design.
Amazing amount of research and preparation. We'll done! And Thank You.
Brian Hudgins I keep seeing you everywhere.
Wow revmatchtv, good video! It’s good to know the history about this before the reveal tonight😎
The CERV-III is absolutely gorgeous! But what were they thinking by merging two transmissions instead of making a transaxle with a drive shaft and 3 differentials?
That was the technology at the time.
@@revmatchtv To me it still seems more complex, idk!
Weight and no way to put that all under the car.
Test Drive 3.
Thank you for changing the name. Went from a dislike to a like (even though I'm still annoyed, I appreciate the hell out of you changing it) The mid engine Corvette is finally here (I believe) to the current name
The CERV III has to be one of the most awesome cars of all time. I get an F1 vibe from it. I suspect it could have done great things. So sad it never made it into production.
I love the CERV III! I hope GM brings it tomorrow
Thumbnail is very misleading 👎
Gotta get people to click on it. That's the way this platform works unfortunately. Hope you enjoyed the info.
Well, it did work 👍

Great video. Your best one yet! The perfect build up for the reveal. So excited for tomorrow!
Thanks man!
Great video! The Corvette history lesson was awesome.
Thank you =)
Eric, that was a wonderful video. 👍🏾You covered info I never knew exist. I hope Chevy will make a statement with design and performance with this car. Only one day to find out.😄
Tomorrow!!
Great history lesson! Thanks Eric!
When chevy was ahead of everybody
Hey Eric, loved the video, one of your best so far.
I am a sucker for educational content. Even if I have read or seen most of the information somewhere else at some point in my life, it is great to have it all compiled in one video. Plus it's great content to see before the reveal of the C8 mid engine car.
There are links to my sources in the description
@@revmatchtv Thanks... I will have to check those out... Always great to be able to learn more about something I am interested in. Even if I am not currently looking to buy a C8 corvette, does not mean I won't be in the future...
I’m calling it, 740-800 horsepower...
My cousin is going to love this video. He collects nothing but muscle cars and Corvettes
Cool =)
200mph in 1960. This was 60 yours ahead of its time.
@David Brown OH WOW. SEE I KNOW THAT OUR NATION UNITED STATES CAN MAKE VERY FAST STRONG SUPER CARS AND LAST LONG TIM, BUT THEY JUST DON'T DO IT. COME ON AMERICA. WE HAVE TO SHOW THE WORLD. THAT WE CAN MAKE SUPER FAST SUPER CARS AND WILL LAST LONG TIME.
Thanks for this! Nice piece on the vette and it’s predecessors. I think the C8 will do fabulous if 1) not priced over the moon 2) no glaring defects or flaws (low HP numbers, inherent mechanical defects etc) I’m not a Chevy or Vette fan (exception being the C3 Stingray 😛) but I am genuinely excited about this release just as a car enthusiast.
PIKES PEAK! Current view, Pikes Peak! Loving this video.
You're a lucky man!
Thanks RevMatchTV for making this kind of video. I love american cars and I'm really happy that a mid-engine Corvette will arrive and I pray for the success of this car. Amazing video by the way.
Shucks!
@@revmatchtv Thanks
Loved the video!
At this point in time they really had no other choice but to go mid-engined with the vette, the amount of power they put out makes them difficult and dangerous to drive in the traditional front engine rear drive layout unless you mount a huge wing on the rear end like they've been doing for the last ten years.
The Cerv3 looks like a street version of the Corvette GTP car that was raced in IMSA at the time.
I think Chevy realizes it's the only viable solution for the power level they want to make and more importantly who they want to sell to.
WOW. I had no knowledge of most of these prototypes, from Chevy. All around awesome video.
Thanks for that! 👍👍👍
I hope GM will have them on display tomorrow!
@@revmatchtv ..Now that would be an absolute trip! 👍
Thank you Eric for the history lesson about the Corvette.
That CERV 3 wow more advanced then any other GM car
So sad it took this many year's to finally get it build. Imagine if the Delorean had that V8 engine and them two tranny's.
Man I thought you was Hawkeye from the Avengers😂
I for one thought the thumbnail wad pretty funny and clever.
'Zora didn't care' - best line! Lmao!
ha!
Great video Erick
So nice, I watched it twice
3rd time's the charm? LOL thanks!
Zora Arkus Duntov IS NOT the Father of the Corvette. That honor belongs to Harley J. Earl.
Awesome video man!!!
Appreciate it
Zora lean't about Mid Engines from John Cooper of Mini Cooper fame. He introduced Mid engines to the World of cars and racing.
Wow, I had no idea GM built all those cool Corvette prototypes back in the day! It seems GM had some great ideas and innovations over the years, heck, they still do today with _Super Cruise_ in the Cadillac range. I think maybe some people are too hard on GM, my experience with their products (built in Australia and Europe) has been positive. I've also driven a C6 'vette and a 2010 Cadillac Escalade, and I thought both cars were good.
It's a super cool story!
Great information bro.
RevmatchTV, you're the best!!! 💯😋
Thank you!
Yeah putting the engine in the rear allows the car to be styled drastically different; and there is something to be said about the exotic feeling of that engine behind you. But I think the main reason that they’re going mid engine is so they can add turbos. They were pretty much stuck with superchargers because of limited space. But now that they can add turbos the sky is the limit when it comes to power. We all know what a turbocharged LS is capable of. Look no further than the Hennessey Venom. Sure making the car mid-engine will help a little bit with handling. But the car was basically mid-engine already. Just behind the front wheels instead of the rear. I think the car is going to sell very well. Depending on the styling I may even consider even buying one, after a year or two of production.
So you mean to tell me the Corvette has been his head of his time since the sixties no wonder they halted the Zora project for almost 20 plus years damn!!!🤙🏾🤯🤯🤯
9:49 Current people buying corvettes look like Jay Leno lol
I will be quite surprised if we find out any pricing structures this evening.
I expect to hear pricing
@@revmatchtv Yes, that is what you stated in your video ... I hope you are right. But I have a feeling that my sources know more than you know.
3:02 I want it! Get rid of the C8 and build this!
That the GT 40, built by Ford, not GM
The Tornado was an Oldsmobile and it’s pronounced “tor-nah-doe”…
I messed up
No ones perfect. I love your vids tho ✊🏾
"Tor-rah-nah-doe" to be exact.
Right. My point is proven. ✊🏾
Again, very interesting Video! :)
Can't wait!!! See you on IG.
What I don't understand is why not continue the front engine platform under Cadillac. Or let Buick have the platform. Classic GM waste of money. Imagine a 4 liter TT AWD Cadillac BlackWing.
Cadillac should have shared the Blackwing. It’s not like the public covets Cadillac cars right now GM could do to save some development costs.
You lost me at "Pontiac Tornado". That's an Olds Toronado. I mean... dude!
Thanks for sharing all that information👍🏻👍🏻 you could do a live stream on Periscope app👍🏻 And see viewer comments as they come in
No one follows me on Twitter. I’ll live stream on Instagram though
Great video but the thumbnail was misleading, better luck next time
But it still works, the theme of mid engine Vett's is cancellation
@@devinroberts6311 i mean the word over the new car
I might change it later, but you know how CZcams works.
@@revmatchtv that's how -mafia- CZcams works
Hello again Revmatch
With some good content
Appreciate it!
GM stuffs an outdated prehistoric engine in this and calls it a high tech supercar. This is a giant dissappointment.
genYprogressive83 It’s incredibly outdated except in the areas of weight, output, compactness, efficiency and durability.
I see the F-body in a lot of the newer prototypes. Very interesting video.
I agree on the F body lineage
Well Done informative post...
Thx!
Starting at $60k forget the supra! lol
9:52 - LOL the younger buyer is Streetspeed717...!!!
I can't take this guy serious anymore. He said "pontiac tornado" smh. Oldsmobile made the tornado, not pontiac
My bad
It’s ugly mid engine pushes everything forward the traditional corvette is beautiful
Lmao its mid engine but pushes everything forward? Yeah you obviously have no idea what you're talking about. Gtfo
I think everyone knows that the car is going to polarizing to quite a few people but Chevy needs to move forward if they want the car to survive long term.
I bought 2 c4s and I'm only 25
The Ford GT is overhyped junk. This car will destroy it.
Overhyped and overpriced
The GT is nearly $1M to buy nowadays. How is the Corvette competing with that?
@@revmatchtv Beating the GT's lap time at about four times below the cost. Not to mention better gas mileage, the looks and sounds as well. The GT just looks really cheap and sounds weird.

Dude sub 3 second 0 to 60 under 60k I'm sure your changing the supra to the c8 now
Didn't we see the Stingray name come back in 2009 as a concept car? And then into actual production for 2014 models? Or is the 2009 Stingray Concept (also known as Corvette Centennial) not part of something GM made?
Good point. The stingray name isn't a shining bright line, but as you rightfully point out, it's been used on concepts and production cars. The 2009 concept brought a lot of styling cues into the C7.
@@revmatchtv I wish the 2009 concept would've been a production model because that thing looked phenomenal in my opinion
Wait.... a rotary Vega? Is there something I need to know about? I had no idea, was that an option?

This is about as serious as it gets in the sports car world folks. Not only is this Americas VOLUME sports car but without tariffs in place would strike fear in the heart of every European car enthusiast. Can this car ERASE BMWs ENTIRE M CAR LINEUP? PROBABLY. Can this car actually compete with Porsches HIGHLY REFINED 992 series? MAYBE? Will it look better than every PORSCHE? DEFINITELY. The biggest question is last, SIDE BY SIDE WOULD THIS CAR BE MORE NOTICABLE THAN FERRARI, MCLAREN, LAMBORGHINI OR ANY OTHER MID ENGINE SPORTS CAR. THATS A VERY BIG MAYBE, and that's all it will take in a non tariff world to compete. I dont care what anyone else says but the C7s look BETTER THAN MOST EXOTICS UNDER A MILLION DOLARS. This is it folks, and its for all the sports car marbles in the real working world unless you make 500k or more every year.
No person with a heart for european sportscars will look twice at a Corvette when they think of bying a new performance vehicle :) European sportscars are superior both on performance, road handling and most important of all the looks.
Chevrolet hasn´t made a good looking Corvette since the 50s and what I can see on the pictures of the C8 it will look about as ugly as the last few models. I would rather have the new Supra than this garbage bag.
@@Christian_Johansson Totally disagree, and side by side the C7 gathers far more attention than Ferraris 488. In Europe right now the SUV craze that America had more than a decade ago has gained traction. Ford Mustangs are a major craze in Germany as well as the Camaro. The C7 had only the shortest of time to actually get into the European market. It still wiped the out most brands of sports cars that cost way more. Dont forget these are fully tested and approved defeats of 911.991.2 Ferrari 458 Italia and their track only car. All M cars and AMG GTR was more or less a tie with the Z06.
Unfortunately they'll never get a younger customer base. People my age are terrible at managing their money. I'm hoping to get a c6 at some point but it like weight on a vette or a house idk...
How does Porsche have a younger customer base, but the average Porsche purchase is over $80K?
@@revmatchtv idk ask the uk. No one here is buying them.
@@revmatchtv Don't get me wrong. I'm getting a C6 as soon as I have a down payment together 👌
