And thanks for watching our video "Just How Scary is the Deep-Sea Magnapinna Squid?"
Hey there! Are you watching this video because you saw that strange footage of a magnapinna squid "attacking" something? Well, I made a little update video giving my thoughts on that, which you can check out here, if you'd like: czcams.com/video/zOMEmn_r-sw/video.html
You now there bigfin squid adult sean
And then living that deep would crush your bones like a tincan
I usually dont like female CZcamsrs, but you're alright.
@@peteardGreatestRacistUltimate virgin: peteard1102
magnapinna italiano lolligo or big fin italian spaghetti
I think we should call them puppeteer squid, because they look like hands pulling the strings of a marionette. I think that's a way cooler name. They should let me be a scientist.
I second that!
You’ve got my vote!
I thought the same thing!! I like puppeteer squid as a name for it.
im here for it
I was thinking the same thing. Marionette squid is an awesome name
these guys used to freak me out a bit before but after watching this video i realized how truly goofy they are when they arent menacingly floating lol
Right?! I felt the same way! When I started doing research for this video, I was like, "all right, what other terrifying things does this squid do?" and ended up being like, "...oh. Nothing this squid does is terrifying." lol
You would not like to run into the 12m one with its tentacles in horror mode
@@inbetween7470 yeah it trully aged like milk
they are scary as all hell
@@inbetween7470 actually by its footage it seems like it was caught up by the ROV propeller, ya know similar to the footage shown in this video
Hell na, the upright pose is an attack position, like a snake about to strike.
honestly I love how unnecessarily creepy these things are. They look like cryptids. Like movie demons. And they're just hanging out harmlessly at the bottom of the ocean. They're literally just chilling down there. Menacingly. I love it
The vibe I want my life to have.
They're just standing there.. MENACINGLY!!
I hope aspiring game developers will draw inspirations from these creatures as potential NPC enemies in the next deep-sea survival-horror game.
Not sure if Subnautica will have a third game, but fingers crossed 🤞
They look like asteromorphs from all tomorrows (or it's the other way around)
They're the spawn of cthulhu what the scientist don't want you to know is that the adult is cthulhu (jk) but there is something elegant about them
Ooooh.... my god...
You have a cephalopod avatar, you do videos about cool ocean things, AND you took the time to credit an artist of an amazing piece when nobody else would?
All right.
Das it.
You've officially just become one of my favorite channels. I'm sticking around.
omg hi
Hear hear!! I’ve watched almost whole channel today 😍
Fr!! Very rarely do I see artists get credit for something they drew that’s often used in videos like this!
Ok Redditor
The spaghetti monster
This just reminded me that when my little sister was like 5 or 6 I used to watch her all the time and she was really difficult sometimes and once we were watching a giant squid documentary and she was like “is.. that real…” and i was like “yeah, but dont worry. He only drives up here to take kids down into the ocean if your *really* bad” and right then someone randomly pulled up to our house and knocked on our door and she was like “DONT LET THE SQUID GET ME. ILL BE GOOD. ILL BE GOOD I PROMISE” And for the next like 3ish years if I ever needed a break I would just take out my phone and start dialing “the giant squid”
LOL
Dialing the giant squid 🦑 haha

yeah that old joke works. ,... but its seems like a bad way to teach humans the right things. using lies as power source is logically and statistically bad .idea... atleast in unmonitored cases or the cases where something can go wrong... and in eworld everything goes wrong one day...
I'm surprised to see no one proposing to call them "Squiddy Long-Tentacles". If we can name arachnids like that we can also do it to cephalopods.
Squiddy langthy legs ❤:3
@@RanEdgar-ok3wkno
There was a recent video release of a bigfin squid "attacking" an ROV. I use air quotes because it's hard to tell if it was just being blown around by the jets or if it was actually attacking, but consensus seems to be that it might have been self-defense after being startled. It seemed to be using its filaments like a coil-like whip to attack. This could maybe suggest that they're more active predators as opposed to just waiting for food to bump into them like how jellyfish feed, but we don't know for certain.
"we don't know for certain." Tell me a more iconic sentence in science.
I actually haven't seen anything respectable say it was attacking anything. The main theories are a defensive maneuver to escape, or, the much more likely scenario, it was caught in a current.
i've heard them called "elbow squid" based on the spooky pose they like to do, and that feels like a pretty good descriptive common name for them
that poor guy who got tangled omg I hope he's okay... these are like some of the least menacing squid I've ever seen
@@inbetween7470 I don't think it's raging, more like if it was get caught up by the ROV propeller
It's really menacing up until the second it stops T-posing
@@sirreginaldfishingtonxvii6149it really is T-posing to assert dominance...
What have you seen 😭
After watching this video I was so surprised to see you have less than 1k subscribers. The quality was great, and I’ve wanted to see more content on these strange, not-so-little guys for so long! I hope this channel continues to grow and get the recognition it deserves because it is 100% underrated. Keep up the good work! (:
Oh man, you must've been my good luck charm, friend, cuz I just broke 1K subscribers
@@OctopusLady3:15 where did you get this footage?
I have always been terrified of the deep water. The thought of what creatures could be lurking between me floating on the surface and the bottom of the ocean is mind blowing.
Yeah there's lots of critters down there, but if it's any consolation to you, the vast majority of them don't even know our species exists!
just remember that there's just as many derpy and adorable sea creatures as there are spooky ones with giant fangs. For every viperfish and anglerfish, there's a dumbo octopus flapping its little head flaps like a cartoon fairy
I feel like another thing to mention when discussing the size of these animals is that it can be tricky to gauge size of things in the open ocean because there’s nothing to compare the size to, nor is there anything in the back to gauge how far away it is. If one happens to be spotted on chance there isn’t going to be the tools or intention needed to measure it
just came here from tiktok, i LOVE magnapinna squids, they just seem so silly in a "spooky lovecraftian spaghetti monster that just kinda floats there" kind of way. definitely my favorite sea creatures and i really hope we get the chance to study them more!
I absolutely love your personality, editing style and content! I look forward to binging all of your videos and the new ones you make! An idea I had for a video would be to talk about the Deep Scattering Layer, I'm not sure if there's a lot to talk about but figured it might be an interested topic! Anyways love the stuff!
as an artist that just enjoys fish facts it's very refreshing to hear artist support in a fish facts video.
I propose calling them Martian Squids 'cause they look to me like the Martian tripods from War of the Worlds. lol Besides, they look alien enough as it is!
By the way, love your adorable octopus avatar! I'd want my marine animal avatar to be a stingray. I always thought they were so cool growing up, and just a week ago on an aquarium trip I actually touched one for the first time!
This is cool, but imma stick with "Puppeteer Shrimp" from one of the other comments.
Yes they do indeed resemble The Tripod Martians.
I have an animal avatar
These squids always make me think of a squid/jellyfish hybrid, they’re so cool 😭
There's new footage! You should see how fast and freaky they are!
This video is absolutely amazing!!! Bigfin squids are actually my favorite squid, and it's so hard to find stuff about them!! This video is wonderful and full of information I'd never heard before. I also love that you called them spaghetti, because that's what I've been jokingly call 'em for a while now. When they're out of elbow pose, they're just overcooked spaghetti!!
glad I stumbled upon your channel, I've had a love of marine life for decades but I also have a crippling fear of water which has provented me from entering that career path, its nice to hear someone else so passionate about them all though.
I been looking for footage of this animal for years now, very thankful that you are not only sharing this precious footage but also your insight and knowledge, I love your channel, great work.
Putting the insane amount of work and research you put into this video, but you're getting a triple like for crediting the artist and bringing that to attention. Legendary!
Great video!
i’ve always been fascinated with cephalopods and they’ve been a comfort thing of mine to research - finding your channel has been a god send. your humour, along with the well sourced research and amazing topics i thought only i thought about make for an amazing time and help calm my anxiety when i begin to panic. can’t thank u enough for ur channel! keep at it!💖💖
There’s been newly released footage that basically changes the entire game what we though they attack like, instead of dragging those tentacles through water to get plankton, they actually *send those long tentacles out and wrap small prey up in them like any other octopus would* it’s terrifying
No we dont really know what its doing it might just be caught in a ocean current or just trying to defend itself.
OMFG WOW
@@melvacaoyona-ollosa278 I saw a video clip dude…
New footage just released of a magnapinna attacking a vessel, super scary watching the tentacles whip around so quickly, really makes them even more terrifying!
I saw that too!! I hope there's an update that shit was WILD
never trusted that they would be thr calm and friendly type
they where allways just floating menacingly like they where staring at looking for the time to strike
my judgment was justified recently
Just looked up that video. That was as much of an attack as a bird getting sucked into a jet engine is an attack.
@@doomyboi I personally didn't ask, that was an attack pattern, something that was never observed before, and you're wrong, so idek why you left this comment
but thanks anyways!
@Eamon Maguire "but you're wrong" wow, what a great and brilliant way to engage in scientific discussion lol. Were you the squid/ROV in the video? Cause that's the only reason I can possibly imagine that you'd get so defensive over an 'attack' by an animal with fewer braincells than a ginger cat. A+ for embracing the number of possibilities in our wonderful world!
your sense of humor is impeccable, and your squid facts are god tier. instantly subbed (edited for spelling because i dumb)
Cool video! The first time I saw that night vision footage I was like “Why do their tentacles jut out away from their body and then hang down??? Freaky” Now I know! The parts that hang down aren’t tentacles. Wonder what about the human psyche finds their vertical position so unsettling, though. They’re just vibing, why does it give me the willies?
Edit: Thought my parents showed me the original video, apparently they didn’t so I showed it to them. My dad’s response was “That thing is what nightmares are made of” 😂
I always wonder this too! Like why is my brain freaked out by this? I also wonder are the creatures of the deep freaked out by us and see us as aliens? :D
Thank you for this video! I've been fascinated by the forbidden spaghetti for years ❤
This the first video of yours I've watched, and I already love your enthusiasm and humor! Thanks for the quality, educational content! ❤️
this makes me so happy!!! the magnapinna is, by far, my FAV animal (and that's saying a lot knowing that the frilled shark's out there), and there's unfortunately not an overwhelming ammount of information on them :( this vid made my day, thank u!!
That name tho💀
This video was a great discovery for me, as it includes footage I haven’t seen, which makes it clear that Magnapinnas are NOT that scary-looking… Phew! Also, I couldn’t understand the lack of suckers on their arms or filaments, based on the footage I have seen. Thanks to you, we know that their suckers are “microscopic”, so of course they don’t show up in murky underwater footage. I find Squids to be fascinating, and really look forward to your upcoming video/Magnapinna footage. Thank you, The Octopus Lady. Take good care!
i absolutely adore your vibe and channel. keep up the wonderful work
been liking this new CZcams recomendation system, Glad I discovered you! Your vídeos are really good
I've heard them referred to as long-armed squid before, so you definitely aren't alone in finding the name big fin squid to be off the mark
All of these videos really capture the joy of discovery in science and show how weird and wonderful our oceans are. the quality, research, and attention to detail as well makes this work really special as well!! Please keep up the amazing work and keep spreading the joy of our strange and special world!
been learning about the deep sea a lot lately and just found your channel!! very epic info and funny commentary 🙌thanks !!
I just randomly found your channel and i live your work
He's just floating there... menacingly!
Great video! I always wondered what these little guys were called. The name needs to be changed, though. I'm sure we will find out more and more about these creatures soon and I am here for it!
First time coming to your channel and I subscribed right away! Great stuff!
I am obsessed with marine biology, but I am too poor to afford to go to University so I read and watch a lot of documentaries.
It kinda looks like a marionette with the strings cut. Perhaps we should call it the marionette squid? It’s still relatively creepy but much cuter and true to character than “bigfin”.
I'll we name th big fin squid, solar squid, don't know why
legit one of my favorite animals so thank you for compiling all this information about them
I have watched every single one of your videos and like, I love your content so much that I'm just rewatching. Keep it up I love your way of presenting research ❣️
6:10 that's so fucking scary 💀
this video is so cool! I love your editing style :0
I love that you always strive to give credit to any art or photos you use! A rare thing on social media!!!
Just found your content today & love it! I'm going to show your channel to my lil sister since your content seems family friendly ❤ keep up the good work 👏
As someone planning to go into marine biology, and with an intrest in deep sea creatures in Particular, and you have an adorable octopus avatar and such a speedy and energetic voice, such a delight. Gonna check out the rest of your channel!
Thank you for this video. I've been trying to find information on this thing for a while now.
Thank you so much about the quick credit the artist talk at 7:10 cuz so many peeps just don't do that and it just sucks.
You have a very endearing and entertaining style. I am subbing
Just found your channel, i absolutely love it.
Yep - was just gonna watch this a random vid that the algorithm fed me, but as soon as you credited the artist I liked and subscribed. Always credit the artist. Cool vid btw 💜
New viewer and now new subscriber! Keep up the great work! Loving your blend of research and presentation.
This was an awesome video!
Your humor is to fall in love with
Just found your channel, love the narration!!
Te algorithim hath shown me the Octopus Lady :D what a wholesome and sweet video!! Gonna have to listen to more on this channel. I think I'm about to learn some stuff today.
FRIKIN SWEET SHOUT OUT TO THE ARTIST!
It was my first time here, I'm now BELLSCRIBED! I really enjoy your delivery and personality, as well as your offered respect to other artists.
I'll be back.
Yes, i did say it like you think i did
I was thinking of a character inspired by one of these wearing a large garb while walking around slowly, as if levitating was. Then you showed the art created by kobadit and it made the idea 10 times better xD. Amazing!
New subscriber here. I’d watched another of this channel’s videos before this - the siphonophore one - and when I saw the channel creator crediting an artist whose work had gone kinda viral sans credit, I knew I had to sub. That’s class, right there. Ensuring someone gets the credit they deserve when it would be easier to just forget about it and use the image uncredited. That’s class.
As to what I would rename the squid? The Phantom Squid. They’re elusive, scary looking, hang out in the world’s flooded sub-basements, are vaguely menacing, and are very misunderstood. Sort of like the Phantom of the Opera. Phantom Squid.
Elbow squid! i know they used to be called elbow squid, and what ever happened to that? it fits so well! its like their most striking feature! their pointy "elbows"!
I just discovered this channel and I already subscribed 😂
The hovering above the ocean floor at 6:11 really did it for me
I love so much that u made videos about this squid cause its one of my fave animals and I like very much ur channel
I was thinking Spaghetti Squid, too! Great video, thank you. I'm subbed now, I love octopuses!
I have never seen most of this footage!!!! thank you!!!
I didn't know I needed this content until I watched this.
I don't know how and I don't know why, but I just happened upon your channel on CZcams. I just have to say that I instantly fell in love you....re channel!!! You are hilarious and informative and I love that you love science! I will be immediately watching every one of your videos. I'm on video three of my octopus lady binge day so far and I'm just LOVING IT!!!
Loved the oceaneering ROV cameo
I love you
Im actually thinking abt getting a magnapinna tattoo so this might be helpful
love these guys :D
The comment about crediting the artist alone was reason enough for me to leave a like in this video. Very well researched and informative, by the way!
I started watching for some cool deep ocean knowledge, but the going out of your way to credit the artist is badass.
This video earned my sub. And 5:03 🤣🤣 I feel so bad but I laughed until I cried. Part of that is imagining the scientists at the controls going "All they do is hang there 🤔...... let's bump it."
I love deep sea creatures, they're actually so cool
3:52 they’re also called elbow squids!
7:08 you've earned my subscription dear friend. I'll watch another video of yours soon. Very honourable.
I appreciate this video. There isn't a lot known about this squid and I have been interested.
Your so cool for crediting the artist
Cephalopods are fascinating. Glad I found you.
I only recently discovered this channel, but now I can't get enough of these videos 🥰 As for a name suggestion, I name it the Chandelier Squid 🦑😆
yo this is such a good video?? does anyone know any other channels that arent clickbaity and dont portray the ocean as horrifying
I really hope one day that we can discover all the things down there it would be so awesome
as spooky as they look, i appreciate the memes where you add groovy music in clips where they swim pass by. so groovy
these guys are super cool, but that footage of it moving gave me a massive case of the heebie-jeebies! learned some new stuff here, thanks!
The Shell oil rig footage still creeps me out. Like really creeps me out. I mean what is the squid thinking. 'I'm gonna creep the ROV controller out by just hanging here and oh hey most of CZcams while I'm at it" cos it did a good job. Also cool video and I love the humour :)
You teach me about beautiful features and teach artists well?!?! In love
7. "Why are they hanging out in the water like that?"
Magnapinna: Just vibin'...
You're awesome for giving credit where its due.
Thank you Dr. Mark Benfield and Octopus Lady
Did you guys see the new video of it actually attacking the ROV? It like throws it’s tentacles at it and moves VERY quickly.
That video is actually SUPER misleading. Not sure why no one has corrected it yet. The much more likely scenario is that the ROV sucked a tentacle(s) into the propeller. The squid was literally fighting for its life, not attacking
@@GlRTHBR00KS I don’t think so. You can see it literally retracting and throwing the threads at the vehicle. And then it blasts off into the darkness.
@@nokiot9 It seems like that because of the lights hitting the tentacles at different angles. One or more of those tentacles were definitely stuck. That, or the ROV was causing a sort of stream or current that was tossing it all around
I liked how the squid waved bye-bye at the end.
"Weaver squid". I know they don't actually do anything that could be called "weaving" the way spiders do, but it's the most evocative name I can think of related to their most striking feature.
I first saw one of these in a youtube video of one hanging out near an oil rig. I had to learn more. My first google search to find them, I typed "elbow squid." I still call them that sometimes.
BLESS for artist cred
The first time I saw a video of these squid really freaked me out, and the surrounding area of the squid was so green it added to the mysterious horror vibe I got them. With all this in my I would call them the chuthulu squid cause that what it reminded me off
4:00 Ohhh it's gorgeous!
I love these things!!! so fun to watch and learn about magnapinna. they seem so scary and lovecraftian but really they are just spaghetti like you said haha
The way it's almost always depicted vertically like that reminds me of the Vortex Queen and Vortex creatures from the Ecco the Dolphin series.
