Oh no. It has been brought to my attention that I said something wrong in this video, repeatedly. I said that potassium is a negatively charged ion. It's not! IT'S POSITIVELY CHARGED.
Looking back on my research, I primarily used this video: czcams.com/video/uU_4uA6-zcE/video.html as my source on how nerves work, plus old memories from my college biology classes. The video says that when a nerve cell is full of potassium ions, it has a negative charge RELATIVE TO THE OUTSIDE OF THE NERVE CELL. And for some reason, I interpreted that as, "Our nerve cells have a negative charge when they're full of potassium ions _because potassium ions are negatively charged."_ And when I compared that information to the vague, woolly memories of my college classes, I thought to myself, "That sounds about right!"
But it was wrong! And if I paid closer attention to the video, I might've been able to figure this out because it states that after all the potassium ions leave the cell, and it's now full of sodium ions, the electrical charge of the nerve cell becomes negative again. If I had followed the logic I used earlier, I maybe would have caught my mistake.
(And also maybe if I glanced at a periodic table for two seconds, I would have caught my mistake then, too)
So again, I was wrong. Potassium ions are positively charged, not negatively charged. I'm sorry for messing that up. I often double and triple check my research on more complicated topics I talk about on my channel, but this is definitely a reminder that, in the future, I should double check the "obvious" stuff, too.

And as we all know, the reason why a pufferfish has those chompers at all is to shred clams into pieces. Yes, one neglected thing about pufferfish is their bite force. They are quite talented artists too, have you seen those rings on the sea floor? That's their handywork!
No joke. I've seen pictures of lures sheared cleanly in half, all of which have been attributed to pufferfish. Not to mention the bites on _people._ They are not a fish you want to mess with, despite their small size.

I've had fugu a couple times, and I've yet to feel the 'tingly' feeling. Apparently, the TTX usually isn't in the meat/flesh, so you'll only get the sensation if other more TTX dense organs are punctured or nicked during preparation of the fish, thus leaking/bleeding the TTX into the safer edible parts. When I asked, because I was like hey, I'm totally missing out on this always talked about aspect of eating fugu, I was told if I or someone I know does get that sensation, you should never go back as the chef wasn't careful enough or couldn't tell the types of fish apart and used a more toxic variety...or both. Don't know how valid this actually is, just what I've been told. Or I have a stomach of steel, which I doubt based on the rest of my life experiences 😂

As far as you know, in places where fugu is prepared and sold as food is there a group that you can report a chef that did a bad job? Liked to retrain or reprimand chefs that are performing their job badly? Considering it’s something they’re licensed for, I’d consider TTX getting onto the meat of the fish, something they’re literally trained not to do, equivalent to like a trucker not knowing the rules of the road and breaking them. Or a pilot not knowing to how to land a plane. Or a surgeon knowingly not keeping things sterile in an OR. Etc.

I agree with your incredulousness in regards to to dolphins getting high off pufferfish. IMO, they just found a self inflatable ball in the ocean and are having fun with it. I mean, humans would totally do the same thing.
That's possible, but if we assume that dolphins are at least as intelligent as humans (and I do) then it's likely their relationship with pufferfish is more complex than we're giving them credit for.
Read the "wade Davis atrocity" when much younger (high school age... have forgotten specifics intentionally)... after researching Haitian history and religious practices while reading I was flabbergasted by the sensationalism and utter lack of proper study by the author... when the school librarian who very adamantly recommended the "book" to me asked what I thought of it I got in trouble for saying "he must've been more wasted than Hemingway"... and I have a decent respect for Hemingway's craft (if not much for his character and some actions)... this video and your perspectives have literally made me so happy I found your content! Your notes on Davis made me LOVE this video in particular.

I have an irrational fear of the Molidae. They make me viscerally uncomfortable. But that's not their fault, they're just lil(big) guys doing their thing! I want to be less afraid of the ocean in general, so maybe learning more will help!

I’ve had fugu (went on an exchange when I was 16). The tingling thing is a myth. It was incredibly bland, but they did have like 8 different courses of it prepared different ways, including deep fried. Osaka is also where most of not all accrediting of fugu chefs takes place, and they have to eat a dish they prepare as part of their finals, so they know their stuff. Honestly give it a go if you have the cash, cuz fine dining can be fun, but you’re not missing out on a world changing taste or anything.
If I were offered Fugu, I'd accept it on the condition that the food was handled EXCLUSIVELY by a PROVEN, licensed chef with a clean history and a hospital within 15 minutes away... and not during rush hour or other high traffic times.

I feel you could make an argument that people eat fugu not DESPITE how poisonous it is, but BECAUSE of how poisonous it is. It's like a show of guts or something?
My personal experience, when getting a mild symtom of TTS poisoning is numdness of skin especially at limbs, your brain makes you feel funny like keep poking you skin (hallucinations?), nothing feel right, you body felt like floating, walking on cloud but your mind is still clear with some dizzyness. it last for 8 hours and over 24hrs back to normal. Never try to clean & cook the puffer fish (aka drumstick fish in my country) your self, NO NO NO!!!

I saw a mola moka once while snorkeling off the coast of Cozumel. It was in the distance, going up to sun itself I guess. I was in love, absolute love.
Have eaten fugu, not something I would have chosen but was taken out when on cultural exchange in Japan.
I spoke very little Japanese, my hosts spoke very little English.
The fish was caught fresh and brought to the table where it was prepared by a chef in front of us to make a hot-pot dish - the restaurant had a large indoor pond/ waterfall with a bridge so could see a lot of fish in there.
I immediately thought "hmmm is that a pufferfush?" But I dismissed my hesitation and assumed it was a related species that was safe to eat.
My hosts communicated that the fish had some special properties like extending life and reversing aging, but that may have been lost in translation. I started to think "hmmm, maybe that IS a pufferfish"
Tingly face and mouth, mild numbness, strong euphoria that I assumed was related to being in Japan and having gone to Ghibli Museum before the restaurant.
So now I like Tetradotoxin, and very glad I had the experience of ingesting it (in minuscule amounts) even if I never would have chosen to eat it if left to my own devices.
I was going to ask why do the farm TTX free puffers to use as risk free fugu. Your story has enlightened me to the reason one would eat fugu. It is not just about the flavour of the poisonous puffer, but the sensation and thrill nano-dosing of the ttx. I would love a ttx nano-dose tab you could just add to your sushi.

one night many years ago in japan i was invited to a sort of potluck by people from the company i had an internship at. one thing they served was fried fugu. i'm not lying when i say it was one of the best things i ever had. unfortunately i was too scared to eat more and the whole night my thoughts circled around how i might die any moment. at that time i didn't know how exactly the poison works. it was a really surreal experience.
i would however definitely eat fugu again. not necessarily the expensive sashimi but regularly priced food that has fugu in it (which uses pufferfish raised without TTX in their diet, so no gambit but the taste alone is great as i said)
I became a doctor, but I almost became a marine biologist because of the mola. Ocean sunfish are just that cool. As for fugu, I would want to see their sushi license, and a Google Translate, since I don’t know how to read Japanese. As an anime fan, I am fluent in Japanese with English subtitles.
Had the opportunity to sample Fugu in Japan many years ago. Tried it fried and raw, very mild flavour and tender texture. Also had crunchy deep fried fins. Lips started getting tingly about 10 minutes into the meal. By the end i was feeling pretty relaxed and kinda drunk.

Would I eat fugu? Nope. Nor would I bungie jump, parachute from a plane, cliff dive, street race, or perform any adrenaline junky activity. That very short burst of adrenaline vs a potential very short life span isn't worth the risk. Call me crazy if you must. I can take it. Ziplining is as adventuresome as I'll get.
the first time my dad took me fishing, the first fish i've ever caught was a pufferfish. he tells this story to everyone and he always sounds so proud of me, makes me happy :) thanks pufferfish :)

Potassium anions are possible, but take a lot of energy to create, so I was confused as well. Looking it up, it sounds like nerves still use positively charged potassium ions, which is the natural state of potassium.

There was probably just a little mix-up in one of the sources or when writing the script. Positively charged potassium and negatively charged chlorine do leave the cell.

Confession: I've always liked fish. I grew up with fish, and there's been a running aquarium in the same house as me for about 20 years, of which I've often participated taking care of the residents.
The latest resident is a koi mix breed, who was sold to us as a goldfish! Tank upgrades ensued. Fish are precious.

You can get dried puffer fish in some places and I have had fugue and it makes things feel strange all over. Depending upon different things you can easily feel like your tingling all over in addition to it being very likely to cause serious injury especially if you drink alcohol during the meal and for up to six hours after.

I had fugu while working in Japan. I was expecting fireworks, but it was pretty mild. Not sure it's worth the risk!
Trying new foods is right up my alley but the risk adverse part of my brain just can't get on board with trying it lol. Laying there completely paralyzed sounds terrifing!!
Look at the situation from the boxfish point of view. They just see a giant coming at them and they lash out in, what is to them, self defense. You can't hold it against an animal that bites you. It doesn't bite out of malice. In fact, it's usually your own fault that you got bit.
I once got but by a huge rattlesnake and I felt bad for the snake, because it stupidly bit my prosthetic leg and as a result it got its fangs so stuck, to get away it had to rip them out of it's own head.
I was even worried the snake might starve but I asked around and found out that it was probably okay, because the fangs would grow back.
Not long after this happened I saw a cartoon that showed a guy with a peg leg walking through the desert with a foot print and a peg print. Next to the peg print was a rattlesnake with stars coming from it's head.
I wrote to the cartoonist and he sent me back a nice letter with a signed print of the cartoon.
Sadly, I lost the print years ago.
You might think finding out that a rattlesnake can regrow its fangs would be easy, and you'd be right, after the 1990's, but this happened in the *EARLY* 1980's. There was no internet. I had to go to the library.

My favorite source of tetrodotoxin is rough-skinned newts, which are native where I live. I have taken photos of ponds full of *thousands* of them just chillin' with each other (or tangled in mating balls!). I love the evolutionary interactions with our native garter snakes and the rough-skinned newts -- some populations of garter snake have developed tolerance of ttx and others, that don't live where the newts are, do not have a high tolerance. Also, this coevolution has resulted in garters that can not only eat the highly toxic newts, but some toxin is retained in the garter snakes' bodies, making them, at times, a poisonous snake. (Some species also have mildly neurotoxic chemicals in their saliva, as well, but most scientists do not believe this should be termed venom, from what I can ascertain. Depends on who you ask.) But really the worst thing they do is musk you and it's extremely stinky.
Rough-skinned newts have the cutest eyes, and the funkiest lil hands and they're so cute when they're walkin' around. Best ever toxic creatures, always wash your hands after handling!

TTX is also present in the blue-ringed octopus, produced by Vibrio alginolyticus and Pseudomonas tetraodonis, living symbiotically in the host animal (like porcupine fish & pufferfish et al).
Most of the fugu servered in Japan is farmed fugu and is both much cheaper than wild and not poisonous. I see it as specials at kaitenzushi restaurants all the time. Mrs. Eats has a great video about it if you're interested
I once watched a great blue heron wrestle with a large pufferfish for at least 20minutes before it was able to deflate it and fly off to eat. Thankfully not too grisly, since it was at a distance, but still quite the scene.

I think I might try Fugu if I was offered the opportunity and I knew that the chef was highly trained. I love seafood of all kinds (and here’s me living in an unfortunately landlocked province… *sigh*) and I don’t have much sense of self preservation. So, yeah, I’d give it a go.

I have 3 pea puffers! No fugu for me, but they're the cutest things that are totally angry and mean spirited. I don't think I've ever seen them sleep but they wake up and choose violence every day.

I've heard about fugu from a few different sources in a few different ways. Like, people from the Food Network talking it up (or down.)
I have always wanted to try it, though. Like, with a group of a few friends or family. Something we could experience together and have as a good memory. It sounds like an interesting experience.
Also, Ocean Sunfish are silly goobers. I am terrified of the wide open ocean and the massive creatures people swim with. Whale sharks terrify me for some reason, like I think I'd love to swim with one but I get this terrible crawly feeling up my back watching people do just that. But Molas look like they'd give you a hug if they could. They're great, I'd love to swim with one.
