Lyrics:
Beasts high atop
Drab slag heaps
Hammer their drums,
Stirring their keeps.
“And they’ll pray to their Gods
To calm that which aches,
As they dig their way
To the center of Hell.”
Hubris-wrought flocks
Toil under duress,
Fleshed with ego,
Tamed with distress.
“And they’ll pray to their Gods
For a mercy so sweet
As they dig their way
To the center of Hell.”
The flock toils, the beasts oversee.
“They’ll howl for their Gods,
Convinced they’ll pay heed
As their chorus is strangled
By the pounding of the drums.”
Beasts high atop
Drab slag heaps
Will hammer their drums
Into the center of Hell. - Hudba
Richmond's INTER ARMA, reigning masters of the slow build, continue to trace a distinctly ambitious trajectory through modern metal. Their impulses tend toward the epic, but never bloat; they meld several styles - doom, sludge, and hard psych - without coming off like dilettantes. This newest full-length, Sulphur English, finds them mining deeper in the proggy organic doom fields that made both Paradise Gallows and Sky Burial so thrilling while expanding further the on the psych-folk strain that made those albums' peaks seem so lofty.
Few metal bands have ever made such effective use of acoustic instruments in truly heavy environments as INTER ARMA do; the acoustic guitar that stitches "Stillness" together is as effective as any overdriven bass; a two-minute gloomy piano-and-feedback piece titled "Observances of the Path" rolls out the carpet for "The Atavist's Meridian," an album highlight that rides a gigantic, roomy drum sound into realms akin to a murkier Paradise Lost, a more aggressive Om, and a dreamier, more stoned Kylesa all playing together at once. Few bands make music as engrossing as INTER ARMA; their lengthy, almost meditative songs rumble patiently forward until you're ready to get thrown off a bridge - and then they throw you, with great force.
- Words by John Darnielle
Wow. John Darnielle? Mountain Goats’ John Darnielle? He’s so cool.
GET OVER HERE!!!
This song is terrifyingly beautiful.
It is impossible to me to label this band. They simply play something beyond any subgenre of metal, they crafted their own personal style, and it's amazing. Definetely one of the best acts in the whole world of extreme music.
Completely agreed, it's what metal needs more of! That genre-breaking, no-boundary metal like Dragged into Sunlight and Inter Arma is so powerful. As an artist, I've been heavily influenced by Inter Arma and now do much the same in terms of metal genre blending.
Sounds like OVO from Italy.
Agreed, This is not your average metal sound. It has elements of Doom/Sludge, Psychedelia, black metal, Death metal, Post-rock, wall of sound/Drone, and noise. Its Tribal. Apocalyptic. It's Avant garde. Transgressive. Otherworldly. To me the sound is orchestral in its power. SWANS, Godflesh, Neurosis, Gorguts, SUNN O)) and Ulcerate. Inter Alma takes those concepts and mutates it.
badass
The clean vocals on this one remind me a lot of Wovenhand. Love it!
Totally get that.
I never thought I'd hear someone else say it. First time I heard this song I said "this is the Wovenhand of metal"
Such an unexpected comment here. There are some definite Refractory Obdurate vibes now that I think of it!
The shrieky vocals remind of me of the singer of Khanate! \m/ Excellent song!
Great stuff...it is good to know that some musicians are trying to experiment as much as possible
So earthly destroyer slaughters human. Angel attempts to intervene but is actually trapped and killed and descends into the center of hell. Did I get that right? Awesome video and even better song!
Gonna see them live in Bologna, Italy, on October 26th...just can't wait
\m/
Clock
This would fit on Celtic Frost's "Monotheist" which is my soundtrack to hell.
I thought the same
Swans going death. Ish. Love it!
That's as close to a genre description we can get, I think :-)
beautiful!
Great music video,is magic!
Yeahh 🤘
Saw these guys in a dorm basement theater, didn't think I'd ever cross paths again despite how good they were. Also, I didn't even know HDR CZcams videos were a thing. Makes me wish I had bought a better monitor...
Great song! Great vid! Gotta get it.
Can't wait for the new album! Sounds great

Cant wait for the Klubi liveshos
I thought the video started off super cool. The song was super cool, too. When I realized it was all CGI, I kinda started liking it less, though. Honestly, that didn’t distract me from how awesomely the foreboding nature of the song matched the video, though.
enjoy hearing this more than mastodon's teardrops
If Primordial ever took it to the next level, they would sound something like this..
Nice intro
God, this is so fucking good
great music and video... about old lucifer trick;P
Fucking fantastic
this is fucking cool
Imma say it every time I have the chance
Of the end of the world had a theme song
These guys would be playing it
I thought this was a video about the match Inter-Parma
fortunately most of us do not give a shit about that
Fucking great live band
Devilish as always.
🧠
Thumbnail looked like loading screen from demons souls
This song reminds me of Rotting Christ stuff...I can dig.
Sounds like the end of the fucking world lol
Still dig Citadel more, but I can’t say to see what else this album has to offer.
I find Citadel less interesting as it sounds a bit more generic than this - it's easier to classify that song within Doom and Death Metal than this. I much prefer when he doesn't growl but that's obviously just a personal preference of mine.
Wait, was that Shadow from Final Fantasy VI?
