Usually if you become a multiple time all star you will have a shot at starting every now and then no matter where you play. It's a popularity contest and it always has been always will be. There's not point in trying to pretend like it's anything else. Coaches and players picking their favorites is the exact same as fans and the media picking their favorites. Everybody has an argument why their guy should be on that list. All this nonsense about not taking the all star game not being serious enough don't mean ANYTHING if you have a 6th man playing the game. Because at the end of the day it's the same result... fans won't be watching. Nobody tuned to the All Star game to watch a regular season type game.
All star selection only helps players to get more money for their next contract. It’s one game that even the players don’t even take seriously and cringy to watch
Yea kinda like the probowl LMAO it's not really a bad thing... You want them to try hard and get hurt in a game that means nothing? Much better alternative.
Gotta remember he also still has fans in Portland and he’s built up a fanbase longer than Brunson. If Brunson keeps it up next year and plays better than Dame again he may start.
I get Shaq’s point. The All-Star game is for the fans - it’s shouldn’t be meant to be an actual meaningful accolade on a player’s resume. That’s what all nba teams are for. All star games are a popularity contest and trying to start arguments about statistics and records only contributes to controversy on weekend which is meant to be fun.

@@bigvsouthphilly2156lol u prolly a Curry fan mad he didnt get the starter spot 😂😂😂 the fact that Bron still leads the voting in the west and top 2 in players voting means ur argument is invalid 😂😂😂
I agree with taking the complete power away from the fans. I lot of guys in history made starting spots based on popularity but clearly didn't deserve it.
As a kid the first thing I looked at before Allstar voting was name recognition, then stat lines for the year… w/l’s probably wasn’t considered until I was in college
When a player retires and people look back to see how good he was / should he enter the HOF, people always look at if he's "X time All-Star". But if popularity is the only criteria then it shouldn't be used to evaluate how good a player was. Zaza Pachulia almost made it one year if anyone remembers. Adding player vote and media vote is a great change IMO, a great balance between fan favorite and who's actually playing well.
I completely agree with shaq, people got confused already about what being an allstar is all about. The whole point is for the fans to see all there favorite player play a game together to celebrate basketball, it 💯% is a popularity contest but that why we have all nba teams that dont take in to a count the "likability" of a player
No it shouldn't be. If you go solely by fan votes then it is a no contest, Every great International player will get voted in first all the time. They have a whole country supporting them plus the fans at their home team.
Yet the fans you speak of aren't watching the game anymore.... Ratings for the game is in the gutter. Less people are watching it because the best players aren't being picked. People don't want a popularity contest. They want to watch the best players.
@@kreizeeboi that’s not true at all if they did that then all international players should be at the top of the voting numbers but all of them didn’t just the top international players made it
That's why I love this show. It feels like watching my family arguing.😂 Plus the big brotherly love out of Chuck and Kenny towards their Giant baby bro "Shaq." Specially when he's throwing tantrums.😂😂😂
Chuck is right! When you come off the bench you’re expected to put up points. Starting is another thing. You have to be more of a floor general and pick your spots to score.
I think everyone forgets the All-Star weekend is for the fans. Most fans don't care who is playing well. They wanna see their favorite players go head to head and team vs team against each other to see who the better players are. If you start taking away that then people aren't gonna watch the game. Fans wanna see who they wanna see. Not who you want to see.
That’s been taken away. They don’t compete anymore. Back in the days players competed against each other in ASGs for bragging rights. New generation don’t wanna play hard in ASGs, prob cos they so injury prone these days
@@GoGetYourShinebox yeah you’re right. They probably also get told not to play hard by their management team. Because what’s it worth getting injured in the All-Star game for. You’re trying to win a championship not All-Star game.
I think I agree with Shaq. When a player is on a great team, personal stats (All-Star and MVP) don’t matter to you anymore. You make those sacrifices to win a championship, so you can’t factor in a team’s record when determining whether or not a player should make the all-star team. Basically the player is acknowledging his stats will go down, but it’s all for getting a ring, so they’re fine with it.
Brunson should have started over Dame. Of course it goes to the fan vote between the two and the fans just vote on legacy and career, not who's having a better year.
Who else can't wait till LeBron retires?? The dude is holding up the NBA noone cares about him or his records just please retire noone wants to see u force the NBA to draft scrub bronny to play with him. He's a bum without the James name he wouldn't even of made a college d1 team
Why would they disagree, did they not see the knicks vs nets game. That was the most insane shhh ever, the knicks bought all the tickets for a Brooklyn home game and bridges was getting boood at the free throw line and it turned into a home game for knicks. That’s energy! No other fan base doing that shhh, same wit LA everybody comes out for those games. It’s a way better environment when they’re playing good
Shaq was right on this one. It's a popularity contest. The fact that it weighs the popularity of three different groups of people against each other doesn't make it any less of a popularity contest. The only way to change that is to base all-star selections on some sort of statistical formula. And that creates its own potential set of problems. In the end, the entire all-star process is a fan service fun time, so a popularity contest is the best way of deciding. If they were going to make it more serious, like giving them a few weeks to practice together, then making them play a 7-game series, then using statistics might be more appropriate.
I agree. When these old-school big cities teams like Lakers, Boston, New York, Detroit, Philadelphia and Chicago are relevant and battles for the championship, That's when the NBA are great and will bring new fans to the sport from around the world
Jalen Brunson is not a system player which is what Shaq is trying to say about him. Brunson is the system. Knicks are not a team without Brunson he runs it all.
If it was just the fans, Jeremy Lin would have been a starter in the ASG cuz he has billions of people in China. They "mix it up" in other sports. I mean Embiid won the MVP last year when Jokic obviously shoulda won it 3 times in a row. So I dunno why they wouldn't put Brunson in.
I agree and disagree with shaq saying fans voted their all stars back then, the thing is compared back then to today is that fans back then we took everything serious, today there is alot of what people today call trolls.. adults with brains of 10 year olders sadly.
This is why I love the Thursday crew better. The other crew just agrees with Shaq and they brush off anyone who disagrees. Candace was checking Shaq abt the Indiana and Milwaukee rivalry and Lefkoe just proceeded with the next discussion
Ever since they met-up and had a crossover with Stephen A and ESPN, the Inside guys have been having these noisy heated debates as well more often now.
2:20 Chuck said that the NBA needs to have certain teams to be relevant. If it's a need, there's a significance to it, which makes it important. Good basketball always comes before any franchise's appeal.
That's the whole point. When the knicks are playing well and I'm the playoffs the nba is better as a whole. Have lakers and knicks and add the new markets it'll be an exciting series all around the board with lots of money being made. But again Kim's success doesn't generate money as in comparison to if the knicks were as you say playing good basketball in the playoffs.
@@xero9329 You missed the point. Chuck denied Kenny’s claim of it being “important,” when that was his argument: “the NBA needs certain teams to be relevant.” No, the NBA needs quality basketball before anything else, which can and should come from everywhere. If your product isn’t good, there is no point in watching. Very erroneous logic it would be to tout that if a team performs badly, people should still be happy because that team sits in a big market: blasphemous. Fair-weather and bandwagon viewers ride treads for the semblance of popularity; basketball fans understand and respect difficulties associated with finding success and maintaining it.
@Yuan-lo3zz ok I understand I miss interpret it. But I will push back on hiw the knicks get covered. Unless you a knicks broadcast team or a knicks fan channel then even if winning knicks don't get the media attention. Just the other day on tnt I think vs the nets or nuggets the broadcast team.spent more time talking about the doc rivers situation than the game itself and what happen. Kenny mad the knicks aint hire him
I'm a big fan of Dame, but either Donovan or Brunson should be starting.
Thank you.

Yea Brunson playing way better than Dame. He will get 20 to 30 ppg but with 19 fga for 20 and 25 fga for 30. Dame isn’t efficient at all!
Brunson was robbed. He should be starting, but I think most know that.
@@cvgodd1432 Dame literally has a higher TS. That means he's been more efficient than Brunson as an overall scorer.

They skipped over Bron having the 8th place & getting the start 😂
People get more excited about the all star voting than the actual game😂
It's crazy 😂
All star selection only helps players to get more money for their next contract. It’s one game that even the players don’t even take seriously and cringy to watch
...and also for players who never win a ring to get into the hall of fame.
Yea kinda like the probowl LMAO it's not really a bad thing... You want them to try hard and get hurt in a game that means nothing? Much better alternative.
Dame shouldn't be starting. Playing for the bucks boosted his fan voting
Blame Stephen A for hyping Dame up over the years.
doesn't matter..fan voting is what matters because fans pays the leagues rent
Gotta remember he also still has fans in Portland and he’s built up a fanbase longer than Brunson. If Brunson keeps it up next year and plays better than Dame again he may start.

Playing for the bucks is why he’s not scoring as much. People know that dame is a beast
Chuck said Kenneth with his chest 😂
I get Shaq’s point. The All-Star game is for the fans - it’s shouldn’t be meant to be an actual meaningful accolade on a player’s resume. That’s what all nba teams are for. All star games are a popularity contest and trying to start arguments about statistics and records only contributes to controversy on weekend which is meant to be fun.
But even the fans get it wrong. Kawhi been balling all year, yet gets snubbed in favor of Bron and KD? BS

I agree with taking the complete power away from the fans. I lot of guys in history made starting spots based on popularity but clearly didn't deserve it.
Nobody can change Shaq's mind about anything lol
I was waiting for things to get “heated” and it never happened. Thanks.
Looking at those two starting lineups, we are spoiled with talent in the NBA
I completely agree with shaq, people got confused already about what being an allstar is all about. The whole point is for the fans to see all there favorite player play a game together to celebrate basketball, it 💯% is a popularity contest but that why we have all nba teams that dont take in to a count the "likability" of a player
I had no idea who Tyrese Haliburton was before a few months ago.
No it shouldn't be. If you go solely by fan votes then it is a no contest, Every great International player will get voted in first all the time. They have a whole country supporting them plus the fans at their home team.
Yeah like few years ago zaza pachulia almost made into all stat starter
Yet the fans you speak of aren't watching the game anymore....
Ratings for the game is in the gutter.
Less people are watching it because the best players aren't being picked. People don't want a popularity contest. They want to watch the best players.
@@kreizeeboi that’s not true at all if they did that then all international players should be at the top of the voting numbers but all of them didn’t just the top international players made it

Chuck is right! When you come off the bench you’re expected to put up points. Starting is another thing. You have to be more of a floor general and pick your spots to score.
Kenny quick to say he from NY. First off thats the first time i heard him confirm this.
Shaq argues just to hear himself talk.
this is why i love this show.. all of them represents all of each of us individually and the only difference is that they played the game.....

Shaq basically said I got robbed of all star appearances so should everyone else 🥴
Whenever Shaq is pissed it’s always some deep down trauma from him getting slighted lmaoooo I believe you Shaq your correct
Not the best because overseas players will vote their players from their countries . We could have guys like Zaza pachulia in the All-Star game lmaoo
Nah the “Ken NY” got me buggin lmao

Yeah, remember when Zaza got votes or when Andrew Wiggins almost got in a few years ago, lol. Fan Campaigns can be meme's nowadays.
Still mad that Wiggins was voted in, Anthony Edwards should have been an all star over him
SHAQ IS 100% RIGHT .. BACK IN THE DAY .. NOBODY WAS SAYING LOOK AT THE RECORD .. IT WAS ALL ABOUT AN INDIVIDUAL PLAYER'S GREATNESS ..
That's wrong, they picked the best players on the best teams, if a team wasn't in the top 8 they rarely had an all star.

I mean Shaq and Barkley been fueding for decades 😂
That’s why I love chuck he literally speaks facts when people be thinking he don’t make sense
If anything I'd say the media is selective in that right
Shaq is completely right. Fans wanted to see their favorite player or players play against each other no matter their record or not. Not every good player plays on a good team 🤷🏾♂️
All stars not all scoring!!! Great point
Look at Ernie's face as Shaq begins to nuke his own argument lol

Shaq was spot on. Winning doesn’t matter that much for all star selection as it does for other categories. All star is a stat pick really, always was.
