    the "tampering detected" error must be the rarest error in xp, like "dangerously low resources" in 9x and "start menu not working" in newer versions

      I once had this weird error on windows 10 where that happened, but did nothing, and the settings refused to work, basically everything is not working, I suspect the registry hive incorrectly loaded in such a way where it didn't crash but screwed up all the functions

      @@XENON2028 windows pe, while being based on whatever main build of windows it's for, is HEAVILY stripped down including the registry, meaning 99% of it would either be just wrong or completely missing

    Never seen the tampering detection / license violation error before!
    Makes me wonder what other rare errors exist across different Windows - other ways of triggering a license violation error and stuff. That might be a fun video to explore and end up learning from

      Alternative suggestion: find the most slimmed-down version of any post-2000 Windows NT and try finding the largest amount of files you can delete without it totally breaking. Could be tedious but fun. At least it's easier than with a bloated Windows 10 copy shipping on a Dell or smth.…

    This reminds me of a time when I ran something from Windows 3.1x on NT 4.0 (maybe the 16-bit regedit?) Anyway it also resulted in some duplicate entries anytime you right-clicked any file. Ever since then I’ve been awfully careful in what I run in dual boot configurations.

    The better way to swap registries is to swap the registry files. These files are located in C:\Windows\System32\config.

    Even if Windows XP DID manage to boot, you wouldn't get far. Since the system detected a license violation you would probably get the SYSTEM_LICENSE_VIOLATION bsod and would be locked out of windows. I've only managed to get it once, and it was during setup.

    I'ts funny how after you swap the registries , in control panel it says "Windows 7 file recovery" like in windows 10 (ofc since it's some win 10 registries) but windows xp was released before windows 7

    Hey, do you think you could use cmd to deploy a windows installation to an external disk? because if you try to do it the proper way, windows just tells you it needs to be on the internal hard drive.

    You should boot to a windows PE and delete the config folder in system32 and replace it with the config folder from a different windows version

    Was the best idea if you also swapped the explorer. It could work since explorer mostly uses registries to work, and it has them which means it *probably* would work, not so great, but fine.
