    Aaron's comment is 100% right! You have inspired me to "just go for it!" I've realized many of my friends don't have plants because they're afraid of failing and the guilt that goes with killing a plant. You have inspired me to just do it! You can always move a plant if you don't put it in the right spot, if it dies, learn from it, and just have fun and don't overthink your projects! Thank you! And Aaron was paying you a compliment. Many people don't like failure and you embrace it or fix it! Kudos to you and him and THANK YOU. My garden is my happy place and I never thought I could be so successful and happy in the dirt!

    I’ve had great success wintering over purple fountain grasses. They are annuals where I live, high desert zone 6. In the fall, I cut them down to about 12 inches. Then, I dig one or two up. I separate each one into 20 or so plugs and plant them in cell trays (larger ones, like 24 per tray) and put them under grow lights in my cool basement. I water them about every week just keeping them barely alive. By the time spring rolls around, I harden them off and plant them in large scale in pots and in the landscape. They get to be the same size as plants I’ve bought from the nursery. Easy peasy!

      Cool! Can you tell me what "hardening off " means?

    • @Winnie-Kay
      @Winnie-Kay Před 4 lety +4

      @@allysonh6410, "hardening off" is the process of acclimating a plant from the indoors to the outdoors. Generally, you set the plant in the shade for a few hours for a few days, increasing the time outdoors, as well as sun exposure, if it's a sun plant, over the course of a couple or several weeks. In the end your plant has "hardened off" well enough to stay outdoors permanently. 😊

    I totally fangirl'd out when we met Laura and Aaron (AND Jack Barnwell) last year at the Proven Winners event at The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, MI. I've never acted like that before, and because my husband is a musician, we have met many famous celebrities over the years. Maybe I was blushing and nervous because I'm a Master Gardener and religiously watch Garden Answer videos. That makes me somehow feel connected to them, but that couple is so approachable, friendly, and refreshingly sweet and personable. My husband talked with Aaron about the music programs he uses & his video editing techniques and equipment while I was talking with Laura; but they were both really busy, so our conversations were brief but thrilling! We celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary while at The Grand Hotel, and it was an experience that we will always remember, and so much more satisfying than taking the cliched trip to Hawaii. {We bought Jack's coffee table book and he signed it with a really nice personal message.}

    Microchip cat flap.

    • @alohadrops
      @alohadrops Před 4 lety

      Yes, we have that as well (2 cats, chipped) and it works perfectly! No other animals (also no other chipped cats) get in and you can also set a timer for the door. For example: let it open from one direction so the cats can come in in the evening but after 8 p.m. they can not go out anymore til 5 a.m. .
      The chip comes in also very handy when a cat gets lost because the number is unique (worldwide!) and every vet usually has a chip reader. So it makes it quite easy to identify to whom the cat belongs to. :)
      Additional note: No surgery is needed for that. It will be done with an injection in the neck/shoulder part and it will not irritate the cats in the future because the chip is really small.

    After I had my son I developed insomnia and restless body as well. It took me 12 years to figure out that I had developed celiac, from the birth of my child, and it had also caused me to become extremely intolerant of caffeine. 😭 After a year off of caffeine (that was 3 years ago) I was able to finally sleep through the night (I have a cat that gets in my face too 🙃). I do occasionally have caffeine and the insomnia instantly comes back. I have also suffered from extreme Steven King like nightmares since I was a child and those went away when I gave up caffeine. That was a nice bonus! Makes me wonder what problems we all have that might also be food related!

So, I went up the canyon, harvested my own rock, and built the wall. It was so difficult but when I moved to St. George, it was still beautiful and very sturdy. (30 years ago.) When my legs are restless I drink a bunch of water because it's usually dehydration, especially in this heat. We lose so much water through our skin and don't compensate by drinking more. Same thing can happen in the winter with the dry indoor heat, especially with the elderly. We get a lot of people through our ER with leg cramps (restless legs can be a precursor for that) because they are so dehydrated and don't even realize it.
      Also for me when I take calcium or eat foods that are high in calcium it helps with the restless legs. Too much magnesium has given me cramps and restless legs in the past. You just have to experiment I guess.

I started watching about a year ago, and am now going back and watching the old videos. I joke with people when they ask about something in my garden ‘well my friend Laura says...’. Lol. This year with the Covid situation gardening has kept me sane. i am working from home full time this summer and able to take better care of my plants and flowers. I dread to see it next year when back in the office. I am in the Chicago burbs which is zone 5, however you can cut the humidity with a knife! It’s awful. I’ll try to keep my hair down and it’s soaked in 5 mins, and up in a ponytail it goes! My teen daughter acts like I’m a crazy flower lady, but I’m hoping she is soaking up info whether she admits to it or not, and will use it later In Life when she has her own space. One thing I’d like to try is a drip system. But being in a typical suburban house with two water spigots I don’t know where to begin. Any tips there to get started would be awesome! Thanks for all you and your adorable family do.

I was with a coworker and we were in Ontario for work from Boise.. we work for a bank ( that you happen to have had in common) and I totally fangirled and my coworker totally made fun of me. Kick myself because I cannot find the picture we took for the life of me!!

    Ah, ha! Sounds like ADHD to me! Even though I'm 60 now, I have the same drive to "do" in the garden as you do, and have a hard time stopping, and I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was around your age. Makes perfect sense. :-) Oh, and I live in Central FL, and as for humidity, and how I stand it: as the sweat is rolling off me in the first 2 minutes I'm outside, I just say to myself "this is cleaning out my pores!", or "it's so good for my skin, hair, and nails...I'll look younger longer!" hahaaa

    I loved the conversation about researching and just 'doing' but perhaps failing. I have loved the fact that you are fearless, undaunted, and always move forward Laura! That has been so inspiring for me - in the past I've spent too much time researching...I think now I've struck a better balance in my own garden since watching your videos. Still respect the research, but with a more undaunted approach.

    I wanted to thank you for mentioning in one of your highlights videos that you had received some great organic soaps from Nefertiti's Royal Soapery. I ordered some and love them!! She sent a freebie called Irish Spring that is so fresh smelling. I took a shower as soon as they arrived. Ha. Who would have figured that by watching your garden channel that I'd find a great organic soap site online! Win-win. Thanks. Great videos Laura and Aaron!

I do like to go back and rewatch some of the videos out of season so they match our season and see what I need to do here in my garden. :) Always have such great ideas and information even if I have to find different companies/products to match. I'm so glad you are slowing down on the amount of videos you are doing. As much as I LOVE what you do, and I feel like you putting out a lot of videos is almost like a service to help people in these troubled times, I couldn't help but worry a bit about the time and energy it took to do so many videos in one week. If it makes it easier to put out videos, I don't need a new project all of the time. I would love five to ten minute videos where you give updates on every plant in a smaller area. During garden tours I see plants I am interested in hearing about that are passed by as you go on to other areas. Or, if it works better, it would be great to get updates on several plants that are in their prime, but are in different areas. You could just cut from one plant to the next. Whatever you do, I'm sure you will find the perfect balance for your family. Please know that I am a very loyal viewer no matter how many videos you do a week. 💕🌳🌸🌲🌼🌳

    I so enjoyed this video ..... I am so behind on them due to me being out in my “really humid” hot weather with my flower projects. My husband and I just finished trimming one shrub......2 was the intended plan, but unfortunately 1 was all we could handle with the humidity ...... so I was recuperating ......relaxing and I am so glad I decided to watch one of your videos. I have 4 hanging baskets with super bells and now I know for sure to let them go almost dry before watering.
    I keep telling my husband we need to move to your state , because here in WV we do not get to start working with flowers as early as you do. Now that I know you have no humidity, I definitely want to move there! To have 55 degrees right now would be so enjoyable...........This year we had the longest period I can remember without it before it finally arrived ..... it definitely kicks u in the butt!! We so enjoyed those weeks before it hit.
    I am also so jealous of your chickens.....I want some so bad.....we can have them, but I do not think our neighbors would like, but then again I would be able to give them some free eggs.....I do have a fake chicken, and rooster with 2 chicks that I plan to set out along with a solar light in my hens and chicks flower bed. Waiting for the poison ivy to be killed in that area.
    Thank you for all your videos you post! I enjoy them all.......

    I live in zone 8b, Texas, and have been able to winter over 6 purple fountain grass in my landscape. I leave them in my landscape and they have stayed around the same size I bought them. I'm taking this because Texas has a mild winter and the house protects them from the winter wind.
