  • Here's an update video on how my overwintered bareroot geraniums are looking and what my next steps are for them. I also give an update on the experiment that I ran with trying to root geranium cuttings a few different ways. I did this experiment with and without heat as well as with and without rooting hormone. I took the cuttings 3.5 weeks ago so I didn't expect there to be too much root development yet.

Can't have too many geraniums. Love them! Thanks 💚

Thank you so much for your videos and rooting experiments. I live in Southern California and it is about zone 8/9 I think. Our winter this past year was very harsh with a lot of rain and very cold. Summer will however be blazing hot, so we go from one extreme to another. With climate change I do not think anything will be "normal" anymore where weather is concerned but it makes planting a guessing game. I planted shocking pink, white and a purple pink, geranium under my front yard tree and prayed for the best. I am so amazed at how well these plants did over the winter. They are HUGE and loaded with the most beautiful flowers!!! My amaryllis are gigantic this year as well, so I guess the plants love all that extra water! My real problem is and has been the propagation of the Geraniums. I have never been able to get the seeds to grow and never been able to root a cutting and I am serious when I say NEVER!!! I cannot ever tell you the amount of money I have spent on seeds, that never grew, and cuttings that I took year after year and they never put on roots. It makes you feel like you are some really sick person that keeps trying everything only to be disappointed, year after year!
Keep doing your experiments, and I am doing mine as well, I am watching as are many others, looking for that magic trick that unlocks the correct method!
My mother and grandmother, use to grow all kinds of plants and they just pinched off a piece and stuck it in the ground and it grew, I sure wish they were still around!!

Hi there. Definitely don't give up on trying to propagate geraniums from seed or cuttings. You can do it! Experiments are the best! I think it's the best way that we can learn. 🌺
It sounds like you learned a lot in terms of gardening when it comes to your mother and grandmother. ♥

Enjoyed your experiment! I overwintered mine barefoot after watching your video last fall. I only lost one.😊 They are the apple blossom color and just beautiful now. I just planted them out in the garden here in western Colorado.

Thanks so much! I'm so excited to hear that most of your bareroot geraniums survived. How wonderful! Your plants should be even larger and more beautiful this year. Yay! 😊🌺

Great experiment. I think my favorite part of gardening is propogation. Sadly, none of my geraniums made it through the winter. I don't think I spritzed them enough. They all dried up. Maybe I'll try leaving them in the pots and overwintering them this winter. I had great success doing that with my Agapanthus. Thank you for all your information. It's really helpful.

Hi there! I love plant propagation as well (be it from seed, cuttings, or dividing). I'm sorry to hear that your geraniums did not overwinter. If you try overwintering them in pots, just be sure to put them in a place that's warm enough, like a basement. My garage gets down to 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4 degrees Celcius) so it would be too cold to overwinter geraniums in there. Happy gardening, friend! 😊🌺

You're very welcome. I'll surely make more videos on geraniums. They are one of my favorite plants! 😊💖
