This version is great. It kinda adds an 80s/90s jukebox honky-tonk vibe
I love the singing harmony's between the singer and drummer. It works perfectly. 2:29 it's perfect harmony.
I first heard a Deer tick song on my Discover Weekly on Spotify in 2010. I was 21 and in a rough time in my life. Recently dropped/flunked out of college, alone after a long difficult teenage & college relationship, with quite a lot of wasted potential and time on my hands. Deer Tick met me there, with deep angst, anguished vocals, and heartbreak mixed with anger.
I'm almost 33, and the songs are a frozen crystal of that time. It's almost too much. I have several albums that are time capsules of my life, but War Elephant holds a very special place. I started writing my own songs with frequency and decent fluency by listening to this album.
P.S. Christ Jesus on The Black Dirt Sessions is significantly more compelling that the War Elephant version, but don't tell anyone I told you so.
