  • Watch this woodworking tool review of the Dewalt DWS779 Sliding Compound Miter Saw before you buy. I recently found this saw on Amazon for $200 off, so I decided to take the plunge and add this tool to my woodworking shop. See the good and the bad, and one nagging question about this saw's description that I can't figure out. While this miter saw is a great investment, especially at the price, I do have a couple of issues.

    Dust collection seems to be a weakness on virtually all miter saws. That's why I just built a shroud with a dust hood in the bottom around mine. Even that has its limitations and isn't perfect, but it did help immensely when your saw is permanently mounted in a miter station.

    • @SothpawDesigns
      @SothpawDesigns  Před rokem +1

      I think that’s par for the course with miter saws, so I don’t stress it. I think a shroud is the right call.

    I am an electrician(27 years). The gfci/afci combo breakers have less nuisance tripping. Especially the square d homeline if you still want the afci protection.

    Great video with a concise summary including good vs bad. Definitely agree not a very portable size and weight. My older version 779 is even heavier at 67 pounds and is a workout to move.

    been in the business for over 40 years, personally I have NEVER seen a dust collection out of the box on any miter saw that was any good, my current Dewalt is over 20 years old , replaced the brushes once used every day up till 3 years ago went out yesterday still works fine Makita and Dewalt are my personal preference these sliders are new to me so I cant really say much about them but the ones I have seen had crappy dust collection as well, Makita and Dewalt hold up to everyday transportation and use in my opinion better than the rest

    Good review! I’ve had the same saw for about two years and have been well pleased with it. My complaints are the same. Dust collection is the weakest point of the saw. It is heavy which is good and bad but with the weight and size, it’s very awkward to carry.

    • @SothpawDesigns

      Have you ever figured out why they list it at 17x21 inches? I'm totally confused about that. The best I can figure is that when you lock it down and turn the bevel to the side, MAYBE that's what they mean.

    • @scottdraughn2077
      @scottdraughn2077 Před rokem +1

      I believe that is the case. It’s the most condensed footprint

    A miter saw stand makes a WORLD of difference. There are many different styles but the style that rolls like a dolly was the preferred style.

    I have the DW780...basically the same saw. Have had it for several years and it has the same "dust collection" set up. Truthfully, the dust collection is pitiful to nonexistent. I have tried all kinds of hose attachments and dust extractors to minimize it. Minimization of the dust is the best you can hope for unfortunately. Miter saws in general all fall into this category. Otherwise, I find mine to be very adequate and it has never failed me with anything I have asked it to cut. I hope you find the same with yours.

    • @SothpawDesigns
      @SothpawDesigns  Před rokem

      That’s kinda what I thought. Just the general design of a miter saw seems to make dust collection difficult.

    As far as getting this saw from homedepot you get a free 80 tooth blade. You have to ask for it because most dont know but the managers are supposed to know .there is a video on CZcams that explains it. I will find it a post it.

  • @adamyoung7785

    Have you tried to change the blade yet? My arbor bolt was seized in place from the factory, had to use vise grips to loosen it after the head stripped from being so tight. Found at least one other guy that had the same thing happen.

    The specs/description on the Lowe's website for the 779 says it will cut a 2x16 at 90 degrees, I don't see how, I get a good 12 inches and if I want something wider it seems I would have to flip it

    • @SothpawDesigns
      @SothpawDesigns  Před měsícem

      Since it slides, it cuts a good bit, but I've not tried to cut 16 inches.

    You can always add a soft start module to your table saw. I'm guessing you have the DWE7492 or it's predecessor. There are how to video's and links to the softstart module on YT. ($25)

      @SothpawDesigns  Před rokem

      Thank you. I had noticed that the only tools that trip the breaker are those with an "abrupt" start, but didn't realize you could modify to add a soft start. I'll DEFINITELY look into that.
