Pretty stoked that you put this out. I bought mine earlier this week and sold off my NVR and Cloud Key Gen1 within hours and made enough to buy it. My only splurge was buying the 19" rack kit for $120 with shipping. I'm excited to see this thing put to work. Thanks for the demo! I'm looking forward to more from you about it.

Man! You are doing a wonderful job with your videos! Keep Killing it!
Just a note about the POE vs USB-C thing I think you would like...
The Quick Charge "Capable" adapter you have has an automatic switcher built in. It will provide a basic charge current at first and then switch to the "Quick Charge" if it detects a higher draw of power than its currently providing.
I'm guessing that the Cloud Key is detecting the lower power source before the wall adapter has a chance to increase the amperage... causing the Cloud Key to shut down.
I imagine that the power source the device starts on is "Primary" and the other is a "Fail Over" that becomes the new Primary. So power will be drawn from the Primary until it's unavailable, and at that point, it will try to get power from the other.
This would mean that plugging the USB-C in first made the wall adapter change into the higher Amp setting, so when unplugging the RJ-45, it was already on the higher Amp mode.
A better USB-C wall adapter for this application would be a USB-C charger meant to power a laptop, that type of charger will always be providing a power source capable of the high Amperage the Cloud Key needs.
(The phone adapter is designed in a way that it won't waste power, saving you money in the long run.)

My first ever experience with Ubiquiti gear (last week) was trying to adopt their 8port 150w switch and I ran into a similar automatic firmware upgrade problem. It took me a few hours to figure it all out since I was still new to their systems/concepts. Basically I could not adopt the switch because the firmware was out of date and I could not update the firmware from the controller. Therefore I went down a rabbit hole of figuring out how to ssh into the switch (after googling for default creds) and forcing a command line firmware upgrade. After that adoption happened smoothly. Pretty rough first customer experience but ever since it’s pretty slick.

I ordered the Cloud Key Gen2 Plus as soon as it was available in the Early Access Store and have been very happy with performance so far. I’ve already deployed 2 of these to customers (13 & 4 cameras respectively) mainly for UniFi Protect functionality since I feel it’s more in line with consumer security cameras without having your footage store in the cloud. Being able to scrub through video on a single camera using the iOS app is brilliant. With every update to UniFi Protect it has gotten much better to have near feature parity with UniFi Video. Now that the UVC G4 camera is in the early access store I’m curious if you will have more features available pairing this with UniFi Protect vs. UniFi Video. I know many people have complained that UniFi Protect is only available using the Cloud Key Gen2 Plus but it’s a relatively small price to pay. My customers love it & are already looking to add more cameras due to low cost & quality compared to other vendors. Thanks Chris for making another quality Ubiquiti video, looking forward to watching your video focused on the UniFi Protect platform.

Hey Chris, Protect 1.5.0 is out (just enable auto updates for Protect and it will grab it), that version fixed a bunch of issues with the live view. I have Protect deployed at 1 site with 5 cameras and 5Tb HDD, it used about 2.5Tb in 1 month time frame. I do like Protect so far. Things I did not like: compared to Hikvision system it lacks line crossing detection and Protect has to use Ubnt's e-mail server to send motion notifications. With Hikvision I send e-mail to my local server that grabs image out of e-mail and runs it thru Amazon Rekognition to see if there are people or vehicles on the photo and only then send an e-mail.
P.S. 0.8.10 update worked fine for me, I had to click the upgrade 2 times though, first time it said something about failure to download.

I installed a UniFi system in my 3,200 square foot home after watching many of your videos (yes, I used your affiliate links). I agree with the others, the WiFi performance is outstanding and I'll never go back to consumer grade WiFi again.
My system consists of an USG, 2 AC-Pros, a CloudKey (Gen1) and a Cisco 26 port PoE switch (had this before the UniFi). As much as I love the UniFi access points, I completely loath the Gen 1 CloudKey. It is constantly locking up and in need of reboot because it thinks the SD card has been removed when it hasn't. I'm guessing this is part of why that battery was added. It's nice to see that they've made that improvement. I'll wait to see how the new generation cloud keys work. If they have in fact solved that problem, I will likely upgrade.

Eventually I would like to run 2 sites, as in, two different locations, from the same portal: For example to run cameras on both locations, but view from one portal: Would that mean a cloud key for each suite? Can this device be used to record and view unifi cameras?

You can manage protect cameras using this device

I have had a CKG2+ since the beta store and it has been great. I think the reason they are only charging $20 more for the plus is because once you add a camera to it you get addicted. I am up to 4 cameras right now with plans to add many more. Which is also bad because I need to buy more ubiquiti switches to handle the extra cameras but that is okay with me. The old unifi video platform device they sold was overpriced I feel like and this is a great new product. Protect isnt perfect but going from the original release it is far more stable and motion alerts are getting better with every update. Just with they had an official apple tv app but using a rtsp streaming app is ok with me.

Great content, do you have any setup for the cloud key gen 2 in the newest controller as the network management tool is different today as it was in this video and i am trying to sort through setup issues with the cloud key gen 2 and 2 uP6 APS, Thanks

Chris, your video made me upgrade my local running controller to a cloudkey gen2+, but i cannot get the external (worldwide) access working. Can you show us the way how to do this? Do you have a video of this?

Thanks for the video. My Cloud Key Gen2 Plus runs quite hot (CPU temp of 58 degrees at this moment; typical range is between 50 and 58), but the Performance screen still rates the temp as "Good". I am NOT using UniFi Protect at this time (no cameras yet), and I have NOT upgraded the HDD. Should I be concerned? What kind of temps are others seeing?

    Great video.
I have this product, had to wait so long to get it, because of shipping to EU was messed up.
I managed to migrate everything from the old cloud key to this one without any problem. Except when i removed the SD card from the old CK, and plugged it in to the new one, for some ODD reason the DPI feature got bugged and the database got corrupted, so I will have to do a repair on the DB when I have the time for it.
The unifi protect is the reason I bought the device. It is amazing for this price point that features / storage / hardware / software combo they are giving.
Ubiquiti is doing an amazing job with disrupting the market with their gear. I love them.

Have done around 10 of these now and just in the last 2 months the changes to the software UI have been great. I just did an upgrade to change out the HD and the instructions are not up to date.
    Replacing HD
    - upgrade to latest software
    - export the SDN config (you do not need the protect but I made a backup)
    - power down
    - replace HD
    - boot up
    - protect will work but SDN requires an import of the config
Moving from an old Cloud Key and old NVR is a little more complicated
    - Backup both devices
    - unplug both devices
    - plug in new Gen 2
    - login and configure the CKG2
    - upgrade CKG2
    - Setup the Protect and SDN using the backups
    - you will need to do all the zone and notifications settings again in the new Protect software. Make sure you verify all the settings because only the cameras will be imported but almost no settings and no recordings

Love the Gen2+, love your videos. Thanks for posting them. I probably set up my network in the wrong order: my network is running fine and I have the Gen2+ controlling it but when I log into the unifi.ubnt site, my Gen2+ is not listed. If I discover the key, it says "managed by other device," and the LED never turns blue. I'm guessing it's managed by itself(?). I'd love some thoughts on how to adopt the Gen2+ into the whole of my topology on the cloud site. It's low-priority, I guess, since everything is up and running except the one blue LED on the Gen2+... Thanks.

I know this is an old video, but I wanted to share that I have had tons of problems with Quick Charge (on my phone) when using cheap USB-C Cables. I have switched to cables that are marked "5A cable", and after that I don't have strange QC problems anymore. I suspect this can be the case with the cloud key as well.

With the "Enable Cloud Access" function, could you enable it on an ad-hoc basis? So for example have cloud access disabled whilst you are at home but then easily enable it for access whilst you are at work or on holiday perhaps?

  • @atomsbudgetreviews8713

Love your show! I've recently acquired a cloud key gen 2 plus and a rack mount accessory.. I've been struggling with getting traffic to appear on the LCD. It's always at zero. It is plugged into a US-24 switch, have 1 unifi AC LR access point, no cameras, and still shows 0 traffic moving up or down stream. Do I need to use a unifi gateway ??

Hey Chris. about that HDD release mechanism. It seems the HDD caddy is heavily spring-loaded. Have you tried pushing in on the HDD tray, and then releasing it? Might make it easier to release.

Sounds like a great concept. It does seem to have some quarks and bugs to work through. Is it advisable to wait on deploying these until some of these issues are fixed? Or do you think its worth getting an early start?

    • @CrosstalkSolutions
      @CrosstalkSolutions  Před 5 lety

The only bugs/quarks that I found were in UniFi Protect - the UniFi SDN and the CloudKey itself seemed OK (except for that one firmware update). The manual SSH update worked fine, and others have reported to me that their update was fine when they did the automated GUI method.

Could you still SSH in to this and be able to save recordings to an external HDD like you could with the NVR? And great video on that too, It helped with my current setup. Also be good if you could do a tutorial of how to fix the bullet G3 Cameras once they are passed their 12 months. I.e Opening up and replacing stuff.

    Hi Chris,
It's interesting to see after you updated the FW on the CK the eMMC storage "shrinked" down from 25.49 GB to 18.70 GB. What could be the reason? Thanks.

    • @lottiethetravellingcamper446
      @lottiethetravellingcamper446 Před 4 lety

Gerhard Tánczos That’s shoeing the available space, the updated firmware must have been a larger file size.
